  • I FINALLY went to Germany to take the Signal Iduna Park (Westfalenstadion) stadium tour, the home of Borussia Dortmund.
I saw the Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB Pokal trophies and will even explain the confusing BVB 09 name this club officially has!

I've always had a soft spot for Borussia Dortmund (also for FC Liverpool) because both played eachother in the 1966 final (then) European Cup-Winners Cup. A few weeks before the '66 World Cup in England. Played at Hampden Park, Glasgow. At age nine it was the first game of my life I ever watched on TV (black & white). Incredible 2nd half and extra-time. Watching Dortmund's fantastic forwards Siggi Held, Lothar Emmerich and "Stan" Libuda, also goalie Tilkowski and others was sheer incredible. Or the Liverpool lot. Not forgetting Roger Hunt's equalizer. Yep, names that were immortalized since then in the 1966 World Cup final. Oh, nearly forgot, Dortmunt won 2-1.

Great observation. I wasn’t really sure what exactly I found so ridiculous about the Timeouts when watching NBA games, but I always mute my PC and sometimes even turn off the monitor when there are timeouts lol. Now you put it into words. It feels like the fans are just some marionettes, they react to what the arena does and it is pretty much the same for every game you watch. In football every club has their own identity and the fans influence that a lot. Especially here in Germany, where tickets aren’t incredibly expensive like in England, where you also are kind of an consumer and not a fan

Hey, great Film about my club. But the reason for the name was a bit wrong. This is right for the outher Borussia. Borussia Mönchengladbach. But the Borussia in BVB comes from a Beer manufacuture in Dortmund with the name: Borussia Brauerei. The funny fact. The Factory only existed until 1901, but Borussia was founded in 1909. It was named after an old sign of this factory in a bar. The founder of BVB searched for a name, so, sitting in the bar, they decided to call it Borussia Dortmund.

The German word for Prussia is Preußen. Borussia is the Latin name and the name of the female personification of the state of Prussia, which existed from 1525 to 1947. The name comes from the Baltic tribe of the Old Prussians or Prußen in German, which lands where conquered by the Teutonic Order or Deutscher Orden in German. 😄

    A little history
Borussia is the Latin word for Prussia, a former European state that comprised much of what today is Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Russia.
With its capital city in Berlin, Prussia was a major European power in the 18th and 19th centuries, and its military might was the driving force behind the unification of the various Germanic states in 1871 and the establishment of Germany as we (more or less) know it today.
As a unified Germany became an increasingly industrialised nation and more powerful player on the international scene, nationalism grew, and was a factor in a number of German clubs, such as Dortmund and Gladbach, but also Neunkirchen and Fulda among others, having Borussia in their name.
Dortmund, founded in 1909 in a local bar, have since become one of the most famous clubs in world football. - Bongarts/Getty Images
    Founding Borussia Dortmund
The Borussia in Borussia Dortmund had less to do with patriotism than convenience, though.
In 1909, a group of local young men, unhappy with playing football under the strict eye of the local priest, decided to form their own club in protest. They met at 60 Oesterholzstrasse, then a bar by the name of Zum Wildschutz, but since the meet-up was rather spontaneous and unprepared, the name Borussia was suggested simply because there was a Borussia-Brauerei sign on the wall, the Borussia Brewery being situated just a short distance from the bar.
    Founding Borussia Mönchengladbach
Borussia Mönchengladbach had been formed in 1900 when a group of young men had assembled at the restaurant Anton Schmitz in the Eicken district of Mönchengladbach. In this case, patriotism was a stronger motivation and Borussia was added to the name since the city of Mönchengladbach was formerly part of the old kingdom of Prussia.
    Who are the true 'Borussen'?
You might also hear fans of each side labelled “Borussen”. Just who are the true Borussen is a point of contention among the two sets of supporters - Gladbach arguably have more of a claim to the title since their club’s formation pre-dates BVB's by nine years - but what is certain is the proud place both of them hold in Germany’s football history.

But I lived in Frankfurt as a kid and remain a big fan of Eintracht Frankfurt. There are also 3 other Frankfurt clubs, which are in the lower leagues... FSV Frankfurt, FC Posavina Frankfurt, and FSV Fortuna Frankfurt 1973. FSV Frankfurt have had the biggest rivalry with Eintracht but all 4 clubs are very close in distance with each other. Great vlog. There are pros and cons to doing the self guided tour. 100% agree with your pros but the cons are you can miss out on a few behind the scenes areas only accessible by staff. Also, when I went on the Hamburg tour they showed us how they converted a stand from a seating area to a terrace. Something you'd definitely not see on your own! 😂

Hiya Sam, I didn't know the Westfalonstadion holds 81,000, do they play Germany matches there? I enjoy your vlogs are you going to Celtic V Real Madrid tonight? this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England

The capacity of 81,000 is only for Bundesliga matches. For European and international matches the capacity is reduced to almost 66,000. This is because the standing areas are replaced with seating to comply with UEFA regulations.

The biggest stadium in Germany. 😊

      @rhowell1978 Před rokem

It’s the third largest, the capacity is only 65,829 when it’s converted into an all seater stadium, making it smaller than the Allianz Arena and Olympiastadium. Neither the Allianz or Olympiastadium have the number of standing sections as Signal Iduna Park
