How painful is it to run dosbox on an old 32-bit CPU? Lets find out.

Slax OS has a 32bit version, is based on Debian, and is under 400mb installed externally or internally.

Thank you. I will try Slax OS on this and do another video on it to see how it goes.

to be able to test multiple installs and builds faster you can set a 32 bit machine on virtualbox to be able to compile faster and then copy the binary to the final machine

ditch the window manager and run the dosbox straight on top of the xorg, 3D acceleration shoudn't be a issue anyway, this is DOS we are talking about and the games in question are nothing extraordinary, none of them actually use 3D acceleration and can run on 486@33Mhz so the problem is the host hogging too much resources and probably eating all RAM and using the HDD to emulate ram witch is painfully slow.

On the newer thin client, maybe try this: sudo update-initramfs -u
It might be lacking some modules at boot.

core=auto is fine. It will use the dynamic core if needed.

I was definitely rethinking my life choices, but I was so far into it, that I just had to continue.... :)

Is it possible you don't have hardware accelerated video drivers for that GPU? I experimented with an old Wyse system from the local e-cycling shop and the Via graphics chipset didn't have X drivers (somebody was working on them for years but never got them accepted into the kernel) so it was doing CPU rendering for all graphics.
Your performance at the desktop looks better than mine did, but I guess it's worth double checking.

may be dosemu will work better, if you still have it in repos ..
