FILM DESCRIPTION:
Idris Elba (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, The Suicide Squad) stars in a pulse-pounding new thriller about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the savannah has but one apex predator. Elba plays Dr. Nate Daniels, a recently widowed husband who returns to South Africa, where he first met his wife, on a long-planned trip with their daughters to a game reserve managed by Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley, Russian Doll series, Maleficent), an old family friend and wildlife biologist. But what begins as a journey of healing jolts into a fearsome fight for survival when a lion, a survivor of blood-thirsty poachers who now sees all humans as the enemy, begins stalking them.

The part in which the lion emerges just when it was thought to be OK was one of the two jump-scares for me when I first saw this movie in theaters. And Norah sticking that tranq-dart in the lion's butt was 'ingenious' to say the least.

This CGI stuff might work with dinos, but animals we all know, like lions, just does not cut it. They should have done like in the Ghost and Darkness, with trained lions and more appropriate cinematography instead of this video game looking stuff. This looks pretty unconvincing and therefore un exciting. You can see the actor is reacting to instructions of someone who is telling him where lion will be, rather than lion is.
Certain scenes they could have had trained lions, but during the attack scenes, those would have had to be cgi for obvious reasons.
@@ghostfave1216 Well, that is where better use of editing and cinematography comes in, does it not? Also acting. In the movie Jaws for example, arguably the best scene is when Quint tells the story of USS Indianapolis during World War II. During editing Spielberg was schooled by an editor who saved the film. Spielberg and crew spend months filming shark scenes and yet if you see the shark for more than 2 seconds it looks like a floating rubber turd, so keeping it to a minimum was a job of a good editor. That being said actors/characters need to be someone you care about. As Stephen King would say. First you create sympathy for characters than you let the monsters loose. Otherwise, why would one care about what happens to characters? Also good rule of thumb is that you spend more time on the proverbial sheep than you do on the proverbial wolf. In other words, the best horror or thriller is not the one that shocks you, but one that makes you care about what happens to the characters. This "beast" film seems like is following the opposite formula , belonging to that genre of sand sharks or 37th equally of Lake Placid with giant crocodile or whatever large predatory animal they haven't exploited yet. Actually not that I think about it, they also have those idiotic cross overs. Giant shark vs giant cobra fighting it out in Greenland or Sahara or something like that. lol
I don't mind parodies that are cheesy and know it, and try to work with it. I also don't mind well made horror or large animal attack type movies. But this is neither well made to be taken seriously, and yet it takes itself way too serious to rob the audience of cheesy fun when the movie is so bad that it knows it and embraces it and makes it fun.
@@KrunoslavStifter Yeah, and especially in the opening scene where we can't see the shark at all and for the majority of the film until the end, we still can't see it. It's better to leave most of the creature scenes for the climax.

When one is good at suggesting horror than imagination of the audience takes over, and since we each have slightly different fears, manipulating viewers imagination skillfully, means to let the audience imagine whatever their fear the most, which is unique to each individual and in doing so filmmaker maximized the effect of horror.
Take for example Alien from 1979 and how you don't even see much of the monster, but its expertly suggested. While by the Alien Resurrect you see a lot of aliens but its not scary at all, its practically comical. In a bad way.

The film had its world premiere on March 9, 2014, at South by Southwest and stars Nick Damici as a blind war veteran that becomes the victim of a werewolf attack. LATE PHASES follows a blind Vietnam War Vet (Damici) in a fight to save himself and his community.
Twitch Film panned the film overall, as they felt that it was "a concept that looks like it absolutely should have worked on paper, but ends up becoming a cautionary tale about what happens when you put too much stock in your wolf rather than your sheep."
All worked really well, with blind guy trying to fight off what he can't see but knows is terrifying. Until they show the actual werewolves. Its unreal the level of cringe they managed to put on screen from that moment on. Just people in badly designed monster suits that would be a laughing stock during Halloween , much less in a horror movie. Just google Late Phases and see for yourself. Cringe all day.
