  • Kostas Sloukas to Panathinaikos is the Euroleague market move of a decade. Ergin Ataman continues to shake things in Athens as PAO’s rebuild process goes on.
In this video, BasketNews Augustas Suliauskas analyzes why pairing Kostas Sloukas and Matthias Lessort is ideal, what problems his backcourt with Luca Vildoza might have and looks at how the Greens should finish out the roster puzzle.

it's not only Sloukas who give on Panathinaikos the power to reach on F4. Panathinaikos is building a strong team with all around players, players like Vildoza, Grant are players who can either start as a starter, or come off the bench and provide offensive solutions. Furthermore, Papapetrou and Mitoglou, are tall and good defenders, they can cover some defensive gaps that might be created by Slouka and Vildoza on the perimeter, as they can drop down and play playmaker defense. Finally, Panathinaikos will hit with another good regional player in the 2-3 position and with a Hezonia-type player in the 4-3. We are waiting to see who these players will be although for the 4-3 position the name of Hejonia is being heard a lot who is an excellent player for this particular team as it is currently built. They are waiting to see what will happen with Papagiannis, who will probably stay.

Probably that was due to local politics between Oly and PAO. PAO physiologically got over Oly and probably the PAO supporters are walking in the air now. EUR 2.7m net per year for 3-years for one of the top2 players of arguably the best performing team of last year (together contributed 58% of total points scored) can not be considered overpayment, especially when compared with the 3m that Thompson got from Efes (single high-performing EL season) and Exum was asking before going to the NBA (single high-performing EL season). Kostas will be 36 when the contract ends (not 37), and as you mentioned there are multiple benefits for PAO in this transfer, such as player's motivation to prove himself against his old coach (who's the main reason why he didn't renew with Olympiakos), leveraging Kostas ability on pick-n-roll (especially as he gets old and scoring will not be the main strength) with Lessort (new sign) and Papagiannis (potentially renewing), and making clear to agents that PAO project is serious. Among others, the transfer also solves issues with the number of local players in the domestic league, and lastly he would be the ideal mentor for the young generation of Greek players in the squad (Mantzoukas, Kostas Antetokounbo, Hugaz, Avdalas, Samodurov).

Sloukas defo overpaid but HAD to, for all the various reasons u mention, not strictly pitch related.
So Pao is defo going for spot 3p shooters now on. SG and PF to be acquired must have that, and they will (according to sources).
Mantzoukas is the best spot up shooter in the team atm, so for me SF is covered with him and Papapetrou. U cant make a team roll without hustling role players, so i wouldnt go for Hezonja, he needs the ball and is another star player.
Papagiannis probably signing as well so u can also play pick n pop.
I d add Danny Green and some stretch-4 (just read about Samanic) and u re a final-4 team, man:)

Surprisingly, Papaggianis is out and there is an empty spot for a center. Preferrably, someone who could stretch the floor. Mantzoukas has a lot of talent and I agree with you, but it's hard to imagine a youngster and Papapetrou covering that position if PAO owner really thinks about contending for the title immediately. I think starting SF is needed but Mantzoukas should definitely get some minutes during the season to grow. Love the Kyle Guy addition, even better than Matt Thomas in my eyes, since he can play with the ball and has more upside to grow as a player in short term

It depends on which players they will sign next, cause so far the only players with actual F4 experience are Sloukas and Papapetrou from back in his days in Olympiacos bench. Thus it is a bit of overstretch to raise them from second to last to first four with just those players and Ataman. Sloukas was a huge negative in both of the last two F4s for Olympiacos , with the team being + 25 with Monaco in the semi and +14 with Real in the final when he was on the bench. Obviously the market dictates a player"s value and he had other big offers but I personally thought that given this fact, his age, his defense and his size that even Olympiacos offer was overpaying.

Other than Jordan there is no other constant in basketball that you can grab on to guarantee success. You settle for a sum of good things and hope. When you want to get better it is good to get better players, when you want to make the playoffs it is good to get players that made it, same with F4 same with the title. Pao is very far away from F4 conversations the realistic questions are they playoff candidates or rather are they actually better than last year? If you put down last year"s roster and this year"s so far you see that there could be a debate even for that..

In the semifinal walkup had 8 pir and (+19) while sloukas 11 pir and (-5). Last years semifinal walkup had 8 pir and (-12) while sloukas had 14 pir and (+6). My point? Experience plays a big role for final 4 and sloukas has it (im not gonna search he previous 7 apperances i think sloukas has in final 4s) While pir shows the performance of a player +/- shows the points his team is in front or behind. Sloukas as u say plays for ur b unit. He comes in as a substitute so his +/- is affected by his teammates like laretzakis that play with him at the same time or perhaps bolomboi. But experience is not the only ingredient for success. Walkup before oly had never played in final four and he turns 31 in december. As for panathinaikos. Nobody says we gonna play in next years final four. We should aim for at least 10position and above for the play in tournament (or 6 and above for playoffs) and when we are in we gonna see what we are capable of or what do we need extra for the next step.

@@stefkoutsoukos8039 My friend this is exactly what I am saying. The question was about Pao"s F4 chances after Sloukas transfer and my point was that it is too far fetched with the current roster and the realistic expectations is to be better than last year. Cause if you see the moves one by one you can"t say that with certainty. They got a much better but at the same time very special coach who is not famous for his hard work, while Radonic came as defense specialist and we all saw how that worked out. Sloukas replaces Lee and even though it is a massive upgrade, Lee"s defense is going to be massively missed. Vildoza came possibly for Grigonis so you need to remember that the Lithuanian came with almost the same hype. Mitoglou has two years out and I don"t think that even in his hey days he will reach the quality of Derrick. The same and more can be said about Papapetrou for Bacon or Ponitka take your pick, especially considering that it is two of them. Kostas is excellent but I don"t think he comes close to Gudaitis. Lessort is definitely an upgrade if Papagianis stays cause compared to him, I am not so sure as they both have one good year with one second team selection. If Moraitis is better than either Kalaitzakis, remains to be seen cause I like all of them, but none of them is actually a real factor in a Euroleague team. I am not trying to ditch Pao"s moves on the contrary they are great especially for the Greek league, where Olympiacos is weakened and depleted of Greek players, however I think that for Euroleague the expectations should be more grounded, given the past, and also the fact that having an expensive roster good on paper guarantees you very little and the current one in paper is not that much better than what last year"s one looked like. And as shown by Efes this year no matter how much you pay guarantees you anything, and possibly the only team that can start the year with F4 expectations is Real Madrid and even they were one Yabusele punch away from the F4.

Olympiakos and the greek national team is still waiting for him (and sadly Pappas, which was the biggest talent of that team) to reach their full potential as envisioned in their U20 gold medal team in 2009. However, he never did evolve. Average and unreliable shooter, too much dribbling when holding the ball, too stagnant without the ball, and a huge liability on defence. I felt that he played more minutes than he deserved this year and it seemes he thinks he should play longer. The true star of Olympiakos was Coach Bartzokas and as long as they have him, they will be fine. Ofc not. You may hate me PAO fans now but lets be realistic. They gor vildoza who played insane for 2 months for red star and then was rly bad rest of season not just in eurolwague but also aba league.
Lessort is insane and i wont argue with that
Papapetrou is solid but nothing special, played 5 to 7 mins for partizan per game
Sloukas is good but overhyped and overpayed. We will see. Imo of they reach playoffs its good , wouldnr be surprised if they ended up 9 to 13 place

@@DeletedMemoriez not really. Larkin and Micic are in really bad condition right now. Sloukas on the other hand is playing better than them, plus he's a Greek so it's better to have more Greek players than foreigners. Olympiacos is so desperate they try to make Americans get the Greek passport just so they can have more Greeks in their roster because Pana has taken most of them.
