  • Max Verstappen is on another level in Formula 1 at the moment and is in the GOAT conversation at the age of 26. But, for me, there is a secret weapon that Verstappen has to put elevate himself above the other drivers on the F1 grid.

This is no judgment against Norris or mental illness, but Lando has routinely been open about his struggles with mental illness and how internet haters can affect him. I’m sure Lando has some excellent help in this category and I’m not deriding the pressure he is under to finish ahead of his teammates, but he has yet to race in the absolute hellish pressure cooker of a season that is a championship title battle season. If something were to derail him like a self-caused crash or supreme pressure like at AD’21, would he be able to have the iron will needed?
Because he will need it as Max Verstappen has a TITANIUM WILL and can compartmentalize pressure in whatever configuration he needs to hone it into a positive for himself and not a negative. He gives exactly zero Fks about what anyone thinks of him and he can block out anything he wants to at any time.

Norris, Russel and Leclerc are potential champions in the same way that Jensen Button was one and then became one when the stars aligned with that Brawn and its double diffusor.
The main reason Rosberg retired was that he was fed up with a toxic team and most importantly a toxic teammate.
Monza was just a return in kind for Silverstone. Hamilton should have been disqualified from the race and really, the whole season, like Schumacher when he tried to assassinate Villeneuve.
Verstappen is under the same pressure as others. Perhaps more. He is relentless for himself. Others cannot put more pressure on him than he already does himself. Which is why he can shrug it off. Norris and Leclerc are two drivers to look at when you want examples of drivers who fail under pressure. Thus fast, but no true champion material.

Verstappen was too far back to even try to contest the corner, he tried anyway by braking very late and thinking of catching Hamilton from the outside, only to find himself in the second part of the chicane with half the car on the kerbs, to the point of not being able to turn the car and take the corner. But instead of recognising his mistake, slowing down, throwing himself to the right and being able to take the corner he decided to go straight, with the obvious result, not being able to turn, that he would go straight and throw Hamilton off the track as well. Add then the presence of the sausage kerbs, which all drivers know are dangerous, and which it was obvious would have made the car unstable and uncontrollable, and it was perfectly predictable that there would have been an accident, potentially even a very serious one, as there undoubtedly would have been without the halo

When Lewis got tired of being bullied in 2021 we started seeing collisions. If other drivers didn’t have nearly as much self preservation for their cars and their race we’d have seen a more blemished 2022 and 2023 seasons.
But Max is very good at not sending it into the wall when he’s by himself. And he just mastered that RB19 like few, if anyone else could. Lewis still states that Max was holding back and the RB19 had even more pace. If true, other teams getting close to RB and other drivers getting close to Max will just be an illusion.

Newey and Co. with the car.
The entire team performed all the complex tasks of fielding a reliable F1 car with remarkable consistentcy.
Strategy, pit stops, engineering, mechanics performed nearly perfectly all year.
Max delivered the most dominant season by a single driver, ever. He was practically error-free.
Christian Horner as Team Principal is in contention for all-time best in that role.
There are graduate level lessons in management and human performance to be gleaned here.

But, yes, Red Bull has been an absolute remarkable team all the way around, every single aspect from chassis to engine to mechanics to strategy to driver coming together to deliver something awe-inspiring.
And in the midst of all the drama right now, that is why the team cannot lose Horner, even if it means losing Max - drivers come and go, and there are other drivers who could dominate in that car, it takes a team effort to get to the top, and leadership is integral to that. Horner has now led that team to two periods of dominance, love him or hate him, it would be a mistake to replace him

Norris has never really competed for the win and against the best drivers for the win. So there is no way of saying how he would perform under pressure. Plus even to his own admission he has made a lot more mistakes than Max did in the two years prior to 2021. Plus he himself does not seem to think that he is a match for Max. So I think he still has a long way to go and will need a far superior car than Max to beat him over a season.
Leclerc has actually competed for race wins against the best, and even half a year for a championship. He has shown that he can be very consistent in a very good car, and beat the best at their best on occasions. He did make some big mistakes under pressure, which Max makes none of. He does not seem to have the dog in him and the galvanizing effect on the team, so he will need a pretty superior car to beat Max.
Russell should first get himself back on track and performing consistently before he can enter a conversation like this.
Neither of these guys would have beaten Lewis in the 2021 season.

There is a camera view from Monza where it shows from behind that Hamilton was turning first into Verstappen while he must have known Verstappen was there. Verstappen was at a point where he could not turn in yet, due to his position. Now, we can debate if Verstappen had the right of being there, fact remains he was, and Hamilton must have seen it, and turned in anyway. Nothing that Verstappen could have done in that position would have prevented the contact. Mind you, i do not claim either of em was to blame, i am only stating what was visible.

Multiple drivers have one of their championships with more than twice what their teammate did, including Hamilton, Vettel, Alonso, Schumacher, Senna, Prost…. the list goes on. Of course, it’s easier to do when you have a clear #2.
Multiple drivers scored enough points to have single-handedly won the constructors title, including Hamilton, Vettel, Schumacher, Senna, Prost…
As for both doubling teammates points and getting enough points individually to win the constructors championship with a few races to go, Schumacher did it - again, clear #2 driver.
Some of the very best drivers in the world would never have been able to do that because they were paired with similarly great drivers. Off the top of my head, Hamilton and Alonso, Senna and Prost.
It’s the magical mix of a truly dominant car and a midfield teammate (or one who is deemed #2 by the team and in strategy decisions)

His racing record says otherwise. He doesn’t come close to winning every race when drivers are in relatively equal machinery, and doesn’t even win every race against teammates when he is given clear preference.
He is, however, undeniably very good at sitting out in front and not having to go wheel to wheel with everyone - and, let’s not forget, he quickly gained a reputation for being willing to crash when going to wheel to wheel, and most drivers give way because of that - which is why he and Hamilton ended up coming together so often as soon as Hamilton no longer had the dominant car and couldn’t afford to just give way all the time.

I think Hamilton and Verstappen have shown that since the hybrid era, car has been more important than driver. As Verstappen himself once said of Mercedes…”60 percent of the drivers in the field would become world champion in a Mercedes. It just depends on the car.” And I think the idea that Verstappen doesn’t make as many mistakes is willful forgetfulness and disregard for Verstappen’s early days. And certainly disregards the fact that many drivers still say they drive differently around him because he’s so over aggressive. It’s easy to make fewer mistakes when drivers defer to your aggressiveness. So being a great driver, having a great car and being a bully certainly get you a long way in F1.
