  • It's that time of year again where football will start spring camps. My sons football helmet was pretty beat up after last year, so it's time to lay some more paint down on it again. I hope this helps you guys figure out how to paint your helmet.. Remember to let it dry for a good 2 days before putting it back together!

    i have a schutt f7 and i just need it a gloss type of purple so id do everything you just did basically?

  • @christopherdutkiewicz6628

    Ok I really appreciate this. What I could not gather in the video is if I am painting a brand new helmet (I could only get black and I need white. Time was running out this year) do I need to "sand" down the black paint totally off the helmet OR just brillow pad it (which to me does not seem like it will take any paint off), apply paint prepare, and then paint?
    If you could clear that up I'd really appreciate it.

    • @Megachad
      @Megachad  Před 2 lety

      you are just trying to scuff the surface up to give the new paint something to stick to. scuff it up really well. the better you do the better the paint will hold. Then clean really well and spray. good luck.

    Just got my son a new white Youth Riddell Victor 1 Helmet. It’s really smooth, so do I need to break that gloss barrier? Or leave it the way it is and just spray the new paint over it?

    • @Megachad
      @Megachad  Před 2 lety

      Sucks you need to paint a new helmet. ha.. you absolutely need to scuff the helmet really well. otherwise the paint will peel right off.

    • @zeketomaselli
      @zeketomaselli Před 2 lety +1

      @@Megachad that makes sense. Coach decided to not go white last minute. So I need to,
      1. Sand it really well enough to break the gloss and seal on it.
      2. Use paint thinner or prep all to clean it up.
      3. Paint it
      Any seal or gloss product need to be used after that?

    My coaches and I were literally talking about painting our boys helmets today because it gets expensive having 25 plus boys helmets painted so I came to CZcams and found your vid from last year. Then noticed in the comments you were going to paint your son helmet today lol. We are going from gloss white to a matte black this year. We are thinking of using automobile paint. Do you think we need to use primer first?

    • @Megachad
      @Megachad  Před 3 lety +1

      If you prep them really well I don't think you need to, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to go to the paint supply store with a helmet and ask them if they recommend a primer and which one they recommend.. They probably will recommend a primer, but the helmets I did in the past without primer worked out better than this helmet I did last year with primer.. So it's hard to say. A hard 1 stage auto paint is very strong. Matte is a tough color to lay down and make it look matte.. So I am not sure how that will turn out. Just talk with the autopaint guys. Make sure they can put it in an aerosol can unless you are very familiar with using a spray gun etc.. they are very difficult to get right if you aren't familiar with them. best of luck!!!

    Hey man thanks for your video. I need to paint my sons helmet but I’m concerned about voiding any manufacturer warranties or potential reactions to the helmet properties itself. Is this something to be concerned about? I mean safety is really key for me. Thx

    • @Megachad
      @Megachad  Před 2 lety +1

      Not really a safety issue. Highschools and colleges paint them all the time. What helmet is it? I'd be more concerned about which helmet you are using if you are worried about safety. There are several that are now very safe and made much better than others.

    • @clancy4freeswag562
      @clancy4freeswag562 Před 2 lety +1

      yes, you need to be concerned about chemical reactions with the helmet.. helmets are made of poly carbons, not plastic, and lots of paints contain acetone, xylene and ether that can make the helmet brittle... contact a certified helmet reconditioning service if you want to do it the right way

    • @Megachad
      @Megachad  Před 2 lety

      you must wait for the paint to fully cure , i would recommend leaving it in the sun as long as you can and then letting it cool all night.. then you can sand it off like I did in my most recent video on how to paint a vicis helmet.

    • @Megachad
      @Megachad  Před 2 lety

      thats why you do a light tack coat first. Light coat, let it sit for 5 min so it gets tacky then the next coat can be a little thicker. it won't usually run because the tacky paint won't let it.. if you get the paint too thick it will run.. it should take 3-5 coats of paint to complete.

    You are actually not supposed to use a spray paint, due to the chemical properties might react with the plastic. Also since spray paint transfers easier when it get on another teams gear (helmet/jersey) the paint won’t come off. Just some food for thought
