    "Words cannot truly express the magical nature of meeting Giuliana and Vincenzo and their wonderful zio Franco. I was fortunate to be the only guest and welcomed warmly before being put to work under the close guidance of zio Franco to make Gianduja gelato as they were running low. All gelato is hand made in small batches from free range eggs, sugar, grass fed cows milk before having the various flavours (single origin cacao beans from all around the world from which Giuliana makes her own chocolate, 1st grade hazelnuts from Piedmont, the best pistachios from Bronte, coffee brewed in a 100 year old family pot from Naples, single origin vanilla beans, the best almonds (and torrone) before being churned in a Carpigiani machine from the 1950s. I can tell you now from experience that need a strong wrist and arm to mix the custard ingredients before cooking! And patience to cook the custard. Giuliana had been to Altamura that morning at 6:30am to collect the special milk from the farmer to use in the gelato. I was also exceptionally privileged to try their famous ‘Lo Scettro del Re’ a family secret recipe gelato made with an extraordinarily high quality saffron. A film crew from Deutsche Welle had been there that day shooting a short documentary on this taste sensation so I got to try it. I have used saffron in my own cooking but only ever in savoury dishes. This was like nothing I have tasted before. Earthy, but floral and with a light sweetness. And it goes without saying that the creaminess and smoothness of the Mokambo gelato is like nothing I have ever tasted before. Grazie mille a tutti for the warmth, generosity and passion shared with me. I will never forget this day. You deserve every success for your commitment to bringing the very best gelato to those who seek it out and appreciate the effort you take to make it.
