"The Sopranos", also known as "Pilot", is the first episode of the HBO television drama series, The Sopranos, which premiered on January 10, 1999. It was written and directed by the series creator and executive producer David Chase.
Synopsis
It is New Jersey, summer 1998. New Jersey mobster Tony Soprano, a capo in the DiMeo crime family, has been referred to a psychiatrist, Dr. Jennifer Melfi, after having a panic attack. Tony tells her he is a waste management consultant, but she knows who he is. After Melfi establishes what will and will not fall under doctor-patient confidentiality, Tony begins to partly open up. - Zábava
I believe the character of Livia and Nancy Marchand's brilliant performance were key to getting this show started.
She was absolutely brilliant!
8:35
Schrafft's was a popular restaurant chain in the NYC area during the middle of the 20th century. The company died out in the '70s.
Just remember: Cunnilingus and psychiatry brought us to this😂❤😂
It sure did!!
The show actually gets better from here. Everybody has grown into their characters and the writers are opening the world.
We cannot wait!
What luck for Tony to catch a fish that had a loaded pistol in its mouth.
Luckiest fisherman EVER
LMAO the dialogue in this show is just unmatched by any show. It's so organic sounding
It really is. It's doubly organic if you're from the East Coast of the US (and from an Italian American family even more so). But absolutely just the dialogue alone places into the top spot for me. Could take out all the violence that I've grown to expect (and enjoy) from the mafia genre and I still believe it'd be a GOAT'ed family drama/dark sitcom lol
@@Jimbow-sz9kh I'm in the southeast. Well deep south lol I'm in Alabama
Great Series, Lets get season 2 started soon..
It will be rolling out before the end of the month!
Livia likes creating drama, but what a character she was one of my favourites actually.
The worst part about the scene with 'Liv and Artie isn't the fact that she IS faking her forgetfulness of his mother's passing, but rather she uses this as an instant to makes jokes on her.
This show gets better and better and S2 is my personal fav. Your reactions are top notch, love from Utah, USA
Yeah she is pure wicked - Lorna
Congratulations on reaching 5k subscribers!!
Love your reactions and can't wait to see how you like Season 2
Thank you so much!
it doesn't matter whether you're at Holsten's or Vesuvio's...just keep in mind the little moments like this!
Hello to Lorna and Colin! I found your channel a few weeks ago and am really enjoying your reactions to the Sopranos.
I'm a life-long resident of New Jersey. I thought some background information on the state might help add some context to the show.
New Jersey is small but very densely populated. It's 273 km high and 112 km wide. The population is around 9.3 million.
The state is very geographically diverse: Urban, suburban, rural, mountains, forests, farmland, wetlands, and beaches (i.e., the Jersey Shore).
The Hudson River runs along the northeastern side of the state. New York City is right across this river to the east. The Statue of Liberty is located close to the bottom of the Hudson. The river dumps into the Atlantic Ocean, which borders the southeastern side of the state. The Delaware River runs along the western side of the state. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is across this river to the southeast.
The majority of the show takes place in the northeast of the state.
Bada Bing (actually called Satin Dolls) is located on Route 17 in Lodi. Heading east from there for 12 km will take you to the George Washington Bridge into New York City. It is actually a state law that if there is nudity at a gentleman's club then alcohol can't be served, so the show takes a bit of artistic license in this regard. Satin Dolls itself is non-nude.
15 km south of Bada Bing is Satriale's Pork Store in Kearny, where the crew is sometimes seen seated outside at small tables on the sidewalk. East of Kearny in New York is the Empire State Building.
20 km west of Bada Bing is Tony Soprano's house in North Caldwell. Just to the south-east of Tony's house is Livia Soprano's house in Verona.
For future reference, the Jersey Shore (the beach towns) starts about 75 km south of Bada Bing and is around 200 km long. Also, the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve is 4,500 square kilometers and is very sparsely populated. It is located in the center and eastern portions of southern New Jersey.
I hope that helped a little to put some things in perspective. You've got a fun ride ahead of you. Enjoy!
Correction: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is across the Delaware River to the southWEST. Wish there was an edit button.
Thank you for all the information! It particularly blow our mind that there are 4 million more people that live in New Jersey than in the whole of Scotland ahah! Nutty.
Appreciate it
Ur right, this show does get better as it goes and season 2 is a step up! Can't wait..keep rockin u guys!
It's fun to watch you guys react to this iconic show! I'm looking forward to you watching future seasons. The show gets much better from here on in.
Michael Imperioli (Christopher) has said that even from the shooting of the pilot, James Galdofini improvised, in some cases playing scenes completely differently not only to the script, but to the whole mood of the scene, which really picked up more complexity to Tony’s character. The first season was good, but I think in subsequent seasons it even picks up, largely because James could play his role in anyway.
While you are on a 'gangster' roll, I’d highly recommend 'Sexy Beast’. As well as being a great movie, it’s another case where an actor (Ben Kingsley) just inhabited a role so completely that it lifted the whole level
I Really Enjoyed your reactions on the 1st Season, lookin forward to 2nd Season, it’s my favorite one😊
YAS! So glad you enjoyed it. Next season is rolling out before the end of the month!
They will introduce another family member.
Your REALLY going to like her.
23:43 Not "hoe" but "hoh", it's their version of "hey", you get to hear it a lot in the show, whenever someone exclaims something. In fact, Artie says is at the end of this episode, while they're at the entrance of his restaurant.
Ahaa! That's makes sense
5K subs! Woo-hoo!! 🎉🎊🎇🎆🥳🏴❤️
Yay! Thank you!
First thoughts: first off, Lorna as Mob Mum? Absolutely. "Who do ye think yer talkin' te?" Wonderful! She'll be running a family in no time!
Second off, Colin hit it spot on: Junior did it out of pride. He would rather be in prison as the boss, than be free and have everyone know he got played by Tony.
Third, no spoilers, I can't *wait* for you two to meet Janice! Nobody spoil anything, just know you'll have a new character to hate in the second season. Tony's sister Janice. She is her mother's daughter! :D
Yeah I'm definitely tough enough haha!
The woman who plays Livia is a top actress
she is honestly outstanding!
26:00 Best assassination in the series! Every shot fired is a hit!
A Bruce Springsteen song ends the episode. The actor who plays Silvio is Little Steven the guitarist in Springsteen's E Street band and Springsteen's longtime best friend.
Ahh nice one! Thanks!
I'm here for all the "eyyymmm" 's...🤙🏾
It's such a bad habit of mine - Lorna
@@weebitreactsNo it is not!! Don't you dare stop! 😄
"nah i don't like that"
Lol you're going to be saying that a lot about Tony and all the characters in this show. It really is hard to describe. In plenty of scenarios we'd all complain about a character "switching up" too quickly. Instead thanks to how great the wirting in this show is (and how every single actor displays the writers' work), we see Tony and plenty characters as more complex characters rather than just contradictory ones.
George Clooney is the only actor to have been in two different series with the same name. One was a sitcom, the other was a drama. Both were called"E.R."
And Angie Dickinson was a sexy, blonde actress from the sixties and seventies.
Ahh great little tid bit 😂. Thanks!
Season 1 was the test run. Season 2 is tighter writing. More than would be a spoiler, so I'll let you discover what's next on your own. But...yeah. Season 2 has my favorite "villain" of the show... who's not related to Tony
Lorna's Mafia Mum impression! 😂🤣😂 So precious & adorable! Marry that lass, Colin! ☺️ And now I can hardly wait for 'Taxi Driver' reaction. 'Nuff said! 🚕 Loved Colin's self-satisfied expression when Melfi backed him up on Livia faking dementia 😁. "Schnorrer" is Yiddish for "beggar, freeloader"
Thank you so much pal!
29:40 yeah . . . you're going to be disappointed about Livia
I think think Goodfellas is kinda easier to parse in understanding mob life in this show (shaking hands with people who tried to kill you) than the Godfather might be. Both are needed to understand a bit more about why they are the way they are though. I think you've said you decided on The Godfather first. I just think Goodfellas would be kinda fun with this show specifically. And easier to get out of the way.
13:05 13:07🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Couldn't find the wee cheeky thumbs up button, but I'll keep looking. Maybe I'll find the wee thumbs up the cheeky button. 😉
ahaha love it
You've both hit on a big part of Junior's personality, and to some extent all of their personalities - fragile masculinity. They're all far too worried about how things look, what everyone else thinks, and Junior is the worst culprit of them all. People die because of it. People think of these big powerful people when they think of the mafia, but deep down this shows that lots of powerful, dangerous people do some of the terrible things they do because of insecurity and weakness, not power.
Your hatred for Livia is soon to be eclipsed.
🤣
How can you hate Olivia but love Tony, Christopher, etc??
My 2 cents: Probably because we're conditioned to expect even a little decency from an old lady who's a mother & grandmother. And her self-pity is just on another level. And yes, they're all manipulative but with Livia you just feel like there isn't one genuine moment where she's NOT playing someone. And then there's that quality that's hard to put your finger on: charm, charisma, personality. Whatever you want to call it, Livia ain't got it. Yeah, she gets off a good zinger now & then but that doesn't make her any more likeable, at least to most people. And they always make her look very physically unattractive in the show, like a stereotypical witch. She's always either crying or scowling. And that hairstyle- yikes! Oh and she did give her blessing to have her own son bumped off. Malignant narcissism is certainly contagious in both "families" but Livia exudes it like no other. Anyway, I guess it's complicated, more emotional than rational. Seems like David Chase's ultimate revenge on his own cold, calculating mom to immortalize her this way
Angie Dickinson was a famous hottie tv actress back in the 70s. Back when Jr was interested in pop culture hotties. He’s definitely showing his age there lol.
Truth is... Jr kinda reveals something about himself with his Angie Dickinson fetish. His Boca girlfriend resembled her a little. Both high haired blondes. In the 70s that look was stylish but looks way out of date on his Boca girlfriend. Reveals Jr’s idea of sexy is extremely narrow & hasn’t changed at all in 50yrs. Point being Jr is permanently stuck in the past. Way way in the past. About everything really.
That's an interesting point about Junior's taste in women being stuck in the past as an expression of his whole personality, and the central conflict of the first season. Never thought about that before. One of the other captains even says to Tony when they're considering their move, "Junior's stuck in the past, and New York knows it. You'll get the okay." Good catch there!
@@matthill5426 Thx. I’m showing my age a little too. I was a bit too young myself in the 70s to be into pop culture babes but it stuck me as odd Jr would have latched on to Angie Dickinson because she wasn’t really a huge star. Raquel Welsh would have made more sense because she was seen as a generational hottie & a mega star. Angie Dickinson was more of a Raquel Welsh or Farrah Fawcett wannabe. All of Jr’s idols are bizarre choices & speak a lot about his character as always seen as 2nd rate or a tough guy wannabe.
You’re turning gangster 🤘
Yeah I could definitely be a mafia mum haha - Lorna
@@weebitreacts 👍
when you are done with The Soprano's you should give the series called Dexter a go. just like this show has you rooting for murderous greedy mobsters, dexter has you rooting for a serial killer.
Colin has already seen it but I haven't so it's a potential for on my own channel @weebitlorna
Livia HAS the onset of Alzheimer’s. She’s NOT ‘faking it’. What good does it do her to act as though she has dementia out of sight of Tony etc???
Legal defense if she's ever charged. She was married into the mob, raised a mobster herself. She knows what she was talking about with Junior, and how the legal system works! She faked that whole episode walking to their house, to set up a defense later in case she needs it!
@@matthill5426 That’s true. But what about her stroke?? Faking that too?? Who smiles in the middle of a stroke?? Is it possible to fake a stroke to medical professionals too?? Could Livia understand what Tony was saying or not?? The medical staff said she couldn’t. Tony said she could & was faking. They both can’t be right. Who is??
