This is an easy step by step install video for putting an IDE-CF reader into your Roland MV Machine.
I received a lot of requests about this installation and therefor no talking, just some text + images.
Ah...also some home made MV-8800 music, of course :)

After installing the CF-reader and after formatting the CF-card with your MV, you can put back the factory patches of the MV.

NOTE: The patch files can be used for both machines. The update files can NOT be used for both machines. Just to warn you!
Version 3.54 is the ultimate version of the MV-8000 and version 1.01 the ultimate version of the MV-8800. NEVER TRY swapping these files. You will brick your MV.
Feel free to ask questions.

Excellent videos man! I found them when trying to connect my newly purchased MV 8000 to my computer to drag files onto it, but I couldn’t get it to connect. Then I burned a cd to try that route, but it didn’t read the cd, nor would it read an audio cd. Looks like it’s busted. Luckily I found this and don’t care anymore about either 😉.
Hi Roger, thanks for the videos :) really helpful and great keeping the MV love going.
Just to share my latest info in case it's helpful to anyone, inspired by your instructions I successfully added an ide SD card reader to my MV8000. It cost about $15 on ebay, and I replaced the floppy drive with it.
Initially I had problems with the memory card, but after reading other comments resolved it by using a full size SD card rather than Micro SD with adapter.
It seems the MV doesn't like micro cards.
It has been fine with a full size 256Gb card, cost around $30.
I actually also have the cf card reader. but preferred the SD reader because it goes straight in my MacBook.
Because the SD card reader came without a case, it was useful for me to take parts from the cf card kit including the metal case and power cable.
Using highly skilled methods (my daughters glue gun, pieces of tape and plastic 😳) I fitted it in securely so I can push cards in and out, and it looks smart from the front.
I also took the power cable extender from the CF reader pack as the internal Roland cable wasn't long enough to reach.
Finally, at first the power connection made the SD reader was too tight to fit in the MV. This was when I was using the large connector - but the cable had a smaller connector on it which could also connect to the SD reader in a different place which solved the problem perfectly.
No soldering, nothing complicated or irreversible on the MV - just a really great upgrade.
Thanks for sharing the love Roger and everyone :)
Hi Paul,
Sorry for the extreme late reaction. I just realized that I didn’t replied to your great message..
Can you tell us which drive you bought to help others?
Soon I will start uploading again!
We stay in touch.

Thanks alot for this research
Done with pleasure. I received so many questions about a step by step video. So, no talking, just simple text + photos.
Really an easy job to do now. Just follow these steps :D
I'm almost done with this but I need a longer ribbon cable for the CD Rom. Do you know which type?
Same. I need it for the mv8800?
Nice loop
All MV-8800 ;)
Peace and Thanks for your knowledge, I say Peace! my question is for the 8000? do I need to keep the floppy drive? can I put something else there? or can I remove it? and the cd drive? do i need it connected? can i remove it or change to dvd burner? just asking for the best knowledge for the 8000? Peace and Thanks
Hi!
Thanks for asking.
The 8000 has it more simple than the 8800 because you can use the space of the floppy to put there the CF-reader because the floppy is not needed for the startup.
You can leave the CD on its place and keep on using it.
When you decide to put the CF-Reader on the place of the CD than you have to leave the CD connected inside your MV.
Good luck and thanks again!

Roger
@@theMIDImaniac peace and thanks... also sorry to jump around? is the vs2480 still worth it? i had my eye on one..
@@trueknowledge5142 Hahaha. No probs! I love the VS-studios. I jumped from the 1824 to the 2400 to the 2480.
Why? Because of the looks, the amount of inputs, two R-BUS, the 4x FX-card sockets, the automated sliders and because I love the workflow. It's deep, yes, but it gives me what I need.
It depends what you want. It does what it has to do, but I know that there are more modern ones with more options.
I just love to have 16 inputs and a lot of outputs. Ah...the mouse + VGA is also a great combo.
Also I've found a CF-Reader and now I can create WAV-files of all my separate tracks with a simple card swap into my computer.
I watched this video over and over again before and after buying the machine.

Good luck on your decision.
@@theMIDImaniac hey...so can you have a hdd/ssd + this mod at the same time on the 8000?
im guessing not cause you mention in description putting the factory patches back on the sd card. so everything needs to run from this card i think
Hi, i wondered how you connected the power (molex) cable since its a different size on the adapter and the MV
I remember that the star tech adapter came with the correct power able.
Was some time ago that I did the installation 🙈
But I also do have a huge amount of molex cables (male/female) to make different kind of connections.
But I’m still convinced that the correct cable came with the adapter.
@@theMIDImaniacthanks a lot for your help!
I ordered an adapter, since my card reader needs the FDD connector
However Im still unsure about the settings on the jumpers, what voltage and what mode do I put it on?
Hi I've just purchased an mv8000. I already have a startech ide-cf reader and cables. I have read that if there is a certain folder missing in the directory of the formatted card it will not save projects? Also is the O.S stored on the main board or on the disk drive? Thanks in advance. Good to see people supporting hardware.
Phonic Crunch hi!
Congratulations on your MV! And great that you already have a CF-reader.
The OS is stored in the MV so no worries for that.
When you format a card/disk the MV will create all the necessary files.
With the CF card you can easily drag and drop files from your computer onto the card when it’s inserted in a card reader.
Good luck and enjoy!
✌🏽
@@theMIDImaniac Perfect. Thank you for your help its appreciated. Best wishes.
Phonic Crunch done with pleasure.
Knowledge can be shared forever!
Phonic Crunch I have a sick Phonic Crunch house record that is at a least 15 years old. Are you the same Phonic Crunch? Logo looks the same as the record I have.
hi men, i have a problem whit my roland mv-8000 my system is freezing, I have replaced hdd, memory and noting, does not enter, help please and sorry for my bad english
Hi!
Could be the following.
1. Bad memory
2. Broken CF-card adapter
Try the following:
Take out memory and startup. Does MV starts? Yes? Change memory.
No? Take out only CF-MicroSD adapter. Does it start with F5?
Yes? CF-SD is corrupt.
Try this, ok?
Roger, how's the recording and playback of the 8 audio tracks using the CF card ? Any issues there ? Has it been battle tested yet ?
Tre Angle good question. Will do a test on that this week. Keep you posted!
I want to do this mod..so I'm not talking from experience. But since (to my understanding) everything is written to ram during recording and accessed from ram during playback I suppose it makes no difference.
The card isn't in use during those operations.
Hi, i replaced hdd on IDE-CF and bought new 32gb card. All works, but sometimes when i trying to drag my some samples from win10 it stops and freezing. Second problem - sometimes a cannot save my project and from that moment my disk is showing as empty. When i restarting, everything is normal againebut i didn't save .. what is the oroblem, what do You think Man? Big up from Poland!
Hi!
When dragging, is the MV in USB-mode?
And regarding saving, I had this issue also a few times.
The solution is to take out the CF card and insert it again. Then check if the card is visible again.
Do this a couple of times until it appears again.
This trick should also work when the MV freezes.
I advice to buy a microSD reader to take out the card for faster file swapping instead of using USB because USB 1.1 is veeerrrryyyuu slow!
@@theMIDImaniac thank You so much for Your answer. Yes MV in USB mode, that's the only way for now, but good advice with adapter. Try to do this when I solve the problem with saving. You mean take out during the freezing and insert back? It will not mess something? And waiting till I see progress?
So this issue didn't return after takeout -insert trick?
@@jakubcholewa8726 the issue starts because of the USB connection but try to eject and insert the CF-card.
@@theMIDImaniac it helps for a while, my card is visible after few times of ejecting but.... saving is impossible still :( I'm not sure if it's happening because of the USB connection. I had advice on the group to change my card on industrial one.... What do You suggest? Do You always use industrial cards?
also what is the sd max 128 gb or higher if you know? thanks again
I've tested with 256GB and it worked perfect!
Where can I get the last software version for the MV-8800? I bought my MV used with no disk and it only has version 1.01
Donnell Bailey 1.01 is the latest version.
Do you also have all the sounds?
Here the link.

@@theMIDImaniac okay thank you. I thought I saw a video where they had a version of 2.5. I guess I was wrong.
@@donnellbailey2710 That 2.5 version you saw is probably for the MV-8000.
Hi. I want reader in my sp808. Its a problem? 🙏🏼 thanks
Luv Beats there’s a mythical reader which will work. It’s from the blue MPC-2000 XL. Only that one works....
The MIDI Maniac thanks. Apparently diskettes is our friends)).
Luv Beats yep....they are 😉
I opened up my MV 8000 and found a 50 pin IDE cable connected to the cd drive and no molex power cable. The hard drive has a 40 pin ide cable and a molex power connector. I want to remove the floppy drive and install this mod there. After further analyzing this video, I’m assuming the ide cable and molex connected to the original hdd is what I should use to connect the ide cf reader. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks again!
Ric Viera hi! You’re totally on the right patch because you’re going to replace the HDD. You have to leave the cd connected and use the molex + 40-pin cable.
Good luck!
The MIDI Maniac thank you!
The MIDI Maniac I finally received all my stuff and installed everything correctly, but I’m getting a “Disk not ready.” message when trying to format the SD card. Any suggestions?
Ric Viera hi!
Hmmm...let me think..so the card is not recognised by the MV.
When you start up, do you need to press F5?
Try to format the micro SD with a computer.
What’s the size of the MicroSD?
The MIDI Maniac The card is 32GB and is formatted fat32 by my computer. The MV powers on then prompts me to press F5. I go through the motion but it says “disk is not ready.”
Question on the SD card and apologies if this was asked 1K times. Why use the micro SD? Why not just a regular SD?
Eric Bertrand EXACTLY! Get a standard, full size SD card with a SD to CF adapter and your problems will disappear!
Hi!
Well, I tell you the truth 🙂
I spent a lot of money and time searching for a solution for the Roland SP-808.
This CF-reader was one of them. Didn’t work in the SP-808 but it did in the MV so for me reason enough to shoot these videos.
I never tried a IDE/SD solution so I can’t confirm nor deny your question.
Would be cool anyway.
I also have the VariOS with a CF/PCMCIA-adapter and a working CF-reader for the SP-808 so enough possibilities to use all those CF-cards hahaha.
Thanks again!
👌🏽✌🏽
Ah, wait...so, a SD/CF adapter. Well, could work also. Somehow I see more micro-SD cards then regular SD-cards. But for sure it will work too.
Roger The MIDI Maniac I had zero luck with micro SD card/adapter. Since I started using a full size SD card and SD to CF adapter, I’ve had NO issues. So, I highly recommend that combo! This solution beats that slow HDD by far! Thanks again!
@@tonelab77 That's awesome to know, Ric!
I will order that too just to test it.
Thanks for the feedback!
Great! Keep it up! Would you like to be CZcams friends? :)
Need to order all this before china collapses smh
hahaha! For sure China will not collapse. Besides that, I guess there's enough stock left in other parts of the world ;-)
