They have not been rejected. There are day centres for special needs. We have a centre we visit regularly near us on the south coast. There is a cafe, a little farm with horses, ponies, peacocks. You can buy plants and a children’s play area. Our grandchildren love going there to see the animals and play. Without these centres they wouldn’t be working or socialising with the public.

I once did some work in a garden centre that was a for people with special needs. I’m in the Dales which is the other side of the vale of York from the moors. It was good for them they really liked it there and some of the staff were trained carers which was important because a couple of them could get difficult. And they went every day and grew flowers tell and earn some money. I think most of them felt more comfortable there than they would do in somewhere like a supermarket it was a very stress free environment.

The video you were watching lost sound around 4:14 and never came back

The sound of the video your watching cuts out at 4:13 in. It's a good video, I've watched it before. I have a disability and grew up in the special schools system. I didn't go to any places like this. But heard about them.
There are disabled people who work in public jobs. But the amount of candidates going for a few specific type of jobs is huge that unless its done under some sort of special system then they will miss out.

I know a friend who often went rambling in a group up past Botton. A number of the villagers would religiously hang around a five bar gate waiting for the ramblers and would point at each as the walked past declaring who they each were. It went something like this: ‘Look, look at him there , it’s Errol Flynn, oh and look at him behind - it’s Prince Charles and her behind it’s Elizabeth Taylor. It was all with good humour on both parts. They all appeared happy.

The Downs Syndrome Association has a very successful work placement programme called Workfit which is very well worthwhile supporting.I don't know about elsewhere but in the North East there is an enormous amount of effort to help and support challenged people from school onwards.Thank you for highlighting this important work.

There used to be a company called Remploy who hired people with special needs. They worked and earned a living.

Wow- it really is a small world! I worked at Botton for several weeks many years ago. Obviously it's not possible to cover such a huge project in such a short docu but I thought this was fairly objectively done. One important thing imo which was missing here is that Rudolf Steiner was not a Christian in any conventional sense at all- in fact he founded a very strong ideology ('anthroposophy'). Still- I really admire(d) how people were trying to help the mentally handicapped (not pc!!) and trying to make the world a better place. Ps- I'll never forget Barry (- or Pamela!!).

My son is supported by Mind. He lives semi independently in a specialist housing project. We got support following an episode when he was sectioned. The police pcso s do regular welfare checks. During lockdown the community police were wonderful. My step daughter is in full time residential care and has carers around the clock. The house in which she lives is a regular looking house in a regular street. She is supported by the Style Acre charity. Both are 29 years old and both are content. This village is interesting. I hope it is well regulated. Safety first.

Can I tell you about this organisation called "Prospects" if you look it up you will find that it was started as A Cause For Concern in Aberystwyth and Reading - it is still operating for people with learning disabilities whose parents get too old to care for them and want them to be in a Christian environment.

I used to deliver to a Remploy factory which provided simple work like toy making for disabled adults. They used to be in every town, but they were phased out a while back. It had 2 residential facilities, one with a warden to help them live independently, and the other for those who did not need help. It was hilarious collecting their money. There were 2 guys who were friends, one I could partly understand and the other unintelligible to me, but they understood each other perfectly. They always argued with each other over whose turn it was to pay me and I just had to wait until they settled it. I also delivered to a day centre for special needs adults, with a manager who ran the place. She always paid me but she was always working somewhere in the place. One young man took it upon himself to look for her and lead me to where she was.

I enjoy watching your presentations and listening to your comments, as I did this one but it was spoiled by loss of the commentary on the film after the initial 5 or 6 minutes but could hear you.
A pity but glitches happen now and then. Keep your videos coming and thank you for your entertainment.

There is diversity in British schools ! When it is possible, children with Downs and other disadvantages DO
got to British schools, there are special staff to teach them etc. The places in this video are for those
for whom that would not work !

I'm from Surrey and we have a few. Bottley Park was a notorious one. At school kids would often be teased as being 'From Bottley Park' by bullies....there was also the term 'Having a Bottley fit' for kids who had a melt down...though often telling a kid not to have a 'Bottley fit', often brought one on...For instance if you were trying to copy someones work in class and they objected, you'd say 'Ok, don't have a Bottley fit about it' and then they'd probably have a Botttley fit...and get kicked out of class by the teacher....

what happened to the sound ?

  • @jamesmcbride6304
    @jamesmcbride6304 Před 2 lety +2

What happened to the sound it spoilt it. ? Depending on the disability some people are integrated into normal working lives. I no when I first started work back in the seventies there was a whole shop floor of people with a whole range of disabilities, and they were very hard working and punctual. I am not sure if thats the case today, maybe health and safety decided to stop it. such a shame as it helped these people obtain a sence of independence and pride that they were contributing to society.

Speaking as an x care worker, it’s all very well ideologically, but fellow care workers I know of have had limbs broken, been attacked and had concussion, and little protection in terms of our rights! And about 90% of your council goes to pay for this,

There are state schools that are for children with special needs run by the education departments, that include Deafness, blindness, physical Inabilities, learning problems, behaviourable problems, Dyslecture, ect,They run alongside the normal schools & some are within the larger state schools but because of their requitements draw from a wider cathment area & usualy are assigned school busses including Wheelchair access in remote areas some of the transport for lesser numbers use trained Local Taxis all transport is asigned trained Escorts & Carers, because of the care involved they are not always noticed by the general public,& at the end of schooling there is a special programe to position those able to work in employment, In a typical British way it all takes place quietly without a fanfare of Trumpets it's just done !!
