  • In this video Master Bladesmith Timothy Potier shows his students how to blend a flat ground test blade to a convex edge on a TW90 belt grinder. This is in preparation for a mock ABS Journeyman test where this knife will chop through two 2x4s, 1" free hanging rope and bend to 90 degrees without breaking. This demo is a part of Tim's 2 week ABS intro to bladesmithing workshop.

This type of geometry seems to be the best way to easily get a "scary" sharp edge on every type of blade. On my last blade I used the same technique, except I used my disc grinder with the softer gasket material under the paper that's usually used for finishing. I believe I once read that's how Mike Quesenberry did/does it. I don't have a VFD on my belt grinder but I do on my disc so I wanted to give it a try. It worked great but I would like it even better if my disc was set up to also run horizontally... I'm just better at judging angles off of that plane for some reason, just as it is on the top of the belt. Anyway, great vid and thanks for sharing. I always like to see how other smiths go about applying the roll/convex to their edges. The thickness before actually applying the edge also helps a lot so that was helpful too.

Damn look at his precision on the first grind. You can see how natural he is following straight down the length of the blade. he's right about people that sharpen their blades- "everybody has his bright side and his dark side" lol

I can't grind anything to save my life. Getting angles is hard as well. For now I use an angle guided sharpener
