Went to an Australian private high school and although this show is exaggerated, I can say that the way he portrays middle class/upper class private school girls in Australia is scarily accurate 😂😳
It's not just middle and upper class girls. We all see a little bit of our teen selves in Ja'mie lol
that's what makes it perfect satire!
its freakishly precise. i also went to a girl's private school in Sydney. i was thankfully a nerd.
Same here and exactly 😂
Agree, I can't believe polo tops for seniors is a weird/new thing.
In hindsight they look like we should all be on a golf course... 😂❤
Chris Lilley says he based Ja’mie on his sister when she was a teenager. He grew up on Sydney’s North Shore and the character was definitely on point for spoilt, entitled behaviours
Gee its nothing like north shore schools, i should know i raised my child in Killara. The first time i watched it reminded me of cronulla girls.
North Shore v Cronulla. Bring it on!!!
I went to a private school on the north shore. Chris was spot on.
@@CQuinnLadydid they go to his portrayal of the girls from ravenswood is spot on. He went to Barker.
@@CQuinnLadyDo you know Cronulla girls?
I spent 12 years at a private girl school in Sydney, yes this show is accurate 😂🤣
So did I ! In the 70’s/80’s and I’m afraid to say this is accurate ! Where did you go ?
Chris Lilley's observation of human behaviour, body language and speech patterns is second to none resulting in his ability to imitate so accurately. Throw in some hilarious scenes and it's no wonder his shows were a hit
Not sure what he's doing in more recent years.
He did a Netflix show in 2019, then in 2020 with the hoo-ha over that career criminal dying in America they pulled 4 of his shows off Netflix. Doesn't seem to have done anything since.
@@TheZodiaczbecause of the racist content with one of his other characters. He was cancelled, although the Jaime character was amazing.
He has made several seasons of a podcast as Ja'mie, it's available on youtube. It's excellent.
His shows have recently been added to binge in Australia. (Foxtels streaming service)
Being an Australian born to a South African family, I find the fact that the show latched onto the stereotype of Ja'mie's parents being successful South African immigrants amusing and a bit close to home.
The whole cast is stereotypes it was close to home for heaps of people but it was funny
Don’t be one of those people , light hearted fun
@@Kermsdaddy I didn’t mean to say it was concerning. I was actually trying to say that it was quite amusing that they made this conscious choice. I enjoyed the show.
We are trying to immigrate elsewhere for obvious reasons. Praat jy Afrikaans?
we had 2 south african friends in highschool, they were literally given $40-50 a day for school lunch
I love that the parents in the comments are like “my daughter would NEVER!” meanwhile all the ex-students are all like “WE WERE EXACTLY LIKE THIS!” 🤣🤣🤣
As an Aussie girl who attended a private school in the same time frame as this it is so accurate, especially just the language and speech patterns 🤣🤣 it feels so nostalgic, like I went to the same school with the characters
His early show "We can be heroes" covers 7 people (all Chris) going for Australian of the year, his characters Daniel Sims and Ricky Wong are gold.
I love we can be heroes! I think it’s seriously underrated
The greatest show, so underrated
OMG how good is that series
I loved the character who rolled
@@donnabridges5858
OMG Pat was hilarious.
When she'd have that staring game with her hubby 🤣🤣
And the time she got the gumnut stuck up her nose. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I find Mr G much funnier but Ja'mie is pretty spot on as the spoilt entitled teenage girl we all knew at school. I think I learned "povvo" and "devvo" from Ja'mie.. 😅
Hhaaaa yes as a Secondsry Australian teacher about to retire…. Taught in both public and private schools her characters are spot on great satire …. Yes close to the bone …. But that’s the point of social commentary . I wanted to ask a student of mine once ‘ look in the mirror do you see Jamie” 😂 kept the thought in my head though . 😂
I love Mr G. I was an Arts teacher and never missed an opportunity to crack out the Lycra bag.
yeah I use that too but think they were around before him. I know devvo was, that's for sure.
I love Mr G. And Ja'mie is every typical snotty rich spoilt girl. It wouldn't surprise me if Mr G was based on a actually school drama teacher he had
Bogin too
Chris Lilley did several single season shows in which he played different stereotypes - bloody brilliant!
All his shows have a limited number of episodes. He is brilliant. Her name is Jamie, but she tries to make it fancy by calling herself "zha-may" (the way to pronounce it). His characters are always spot on, and this one was about an absolute spoiled and selfish girl. His show "Jonah From Tonga" (I think that was the name) was cancelled in the USA because they found it offensive, but it wasn't racist. It was observational and funny and Tongn people thought it was hiarious, too. In that he went over the top in some ways, but still stuck to character. "We Can Be Heoes" was teh first and had so many weird people. The situations were absurd, but he carried them off with aplomb. And "Summer Heights High" was a masterpiece.
I loved Jonah and summer heights high felt like being back in a classroom
He has multiple shows with limited episodes. All inappropriate and hilarious! 😂
I had read that the Tonga actors were not happy with how they are depicted
Jonah from Tonga was the best 😭 I can’t believe they removed it from Netflix, it was accurate af to an Aussie school LMFAO
@@tonimedlen5371 He also modelled the character off a real person, and that person felt exposed and humiliated, as he felt the whole nation was laughing at him. I am a Secondary Teacher and based on my observations, Lilley could have easily portrayed the same type of character from his own demographic.
This highlights reel distracts a bit from the fact that the episodes do generally contain a story and plot line. There are actually more episodes with Ja'mie, but she is only one character on the show in separate series called We Can Be Heroes and Summer Heights High. One of Chris Lilley's other popular characters aslo got his own show - "Jonah from Tonga". It was popular in the UK but then I recall some people tried to get it cancelled over there because it contained some themes that people felt were offensive. Most of us laugh at it though because while it is outlandish, each of these characters does remind us of someone we know or behaviour we have come across. I'm pretty sure Summer Heights High was also picked up by HBO. I wish we had good stuff on tv like this these days, as there is very little to look forward to.
Don't forget 'Angry Boys'. Another spin-off from 'We Can Be Heroes', thanks to Daniel and his deaf brother Nathan.
What is a School Prefect?
"Prefects are elected each year from students in Years 11 and 12. They are expected to be role models for the whole school and assume leadership positions throughout the year. "
Jamie can be a girls name, however Ja'mie is an affectation to make it sound fancy.
Chris Lilley has a character called Mr G and he sat in on lessons from my schools music teacher to gain inspiration for the character back when he created him. This teacher was very proud of the fact and if you know the character you know he really shouldn't have been so proud
Mr G is the best of his characters so I would 100% be proud lmao
Chris Lilley is a comic genuis and there were certain people who wanted him cancelled
No
I'm pretty sure they won because what has Chris Lilley been able to create lately?
@@tlam3309 thats man been gone for YEARS
Lilley is a genius … Summer Heights High, We Can Be Hero’s, Angry Boys and more … smashing boundaries with a bazooka, un PC doesn’t begin to describe. I used to watch him through my fingers 🫣 laughing all the way. His characters and ability were next level 🤗
Yep he is a genius
This comment should be pinned so everyone can enjoy the genius Chris Lilley, in all his forms. lolz 😂
OMG yes! Chris nailed the private school teenage girl!!!!😂😂😂 Me and my friends were exactly like this in high school (1990-1995) wont name our school though 😜
Yes early 90s omg 😂
Summer heights high is the best , Mr G and his musical ecstasy lol and when he quits his job haha so funny .
Hello from the North Shore! 😁 Yes, these are real stereotypes and the attitudes really exist, and these things really happened here! 😂👍
What ! No hyphenated sir name.

And Ja'mie didn't have a hyphenated last name, either. But her first name made up for it, though. 😂
@@davidbarlow6860I could invent one, hmm! 🤔
@@jenniferharrison8915 maybe a title could be used also. Dame / Lady fill in the blank.
Hello from the north shore too! How accurate is this show 😂
"Ja'mie - private school girl" is a spin-off show, evolving from from "Summer Heights high" (2007) where Chris Lilley plays, "Ja'mie", "Mr G" the drama teacher, and "Jonah" (which also evolved into it's own spin off show). Cancel-culture came after "Jonah" big time, which is sad as he's such a lovable character.
One of the most talented Australian comedians 🎉
Unfortunately he got cancelled a few years ago for doing blackface.
No
I remember watching this in the UK, I thought it was bloody hilarious!! 😀
Me too. Summer heights high was brilliant
We still had a sense of humour in 2013. Ja’ime episodes would be 1 minute long nowadays and come with a trigger warning ⚠️
The trigger warning would cover approximately 40 seconds of the episode covering all the things people will decide to be offended about.
@@levlyloveoh damn I didn’t even read this but you bet me to it lmaoooo
I grew up in the epicentre of Melbourne’s private school district but went to one of the all girl state schools that was trying to “appear” private, and can pretty confidently say that this is a pretty accurate portrayal of these schools and the people that go to them, or grew up in these inner eastern areas. I moved from the outer suburbs so it was a big culture shock and I struggled with the two faced back stabbing and bullying, which continued into adulthood. Needless to say I’m not friends with any of the girls I considered my closest friends cos it just got too much. This show was definitely an entertaining take on the private schools in Australia.
The logo for her charity is amazing. Absolute genius and hilarious! 😂
As a aussie lady in a private school- theres two groups of girls. This one. And my group; the we don’t give a shit and either have more detentions then you’ve heard of or less then anyone else in the grade.
I was definitely in Ja’mie’s group, we were the mean girls at our private girl school.
@@ToeKnife166 yeah same unfortunately
The show came out when I was in high school... at a private all girls school in Australia. The general consensus in my class was that it was funny because it was accurate.
I was part of the latter, occasionally in trouble, either sitting outside the Principals office or in detention after school.
However, I went to a public school, not private. And even at my school we still had groups, and there were certainly a group of girls just like Ja'mie and her friends.
Chris Lilley was too politically incorrect and was taken off air. Check out his Tongan school boy series, Jonah from Tonga. If you can find it. Priceless. Another classic series, from NZ, with similar humour was Seven Periods with Mr Gormsby. Gold.
He wasn't too politically incorrect, he does mockumentaries they can't go on for seasons
Oh I saw an episode of two of Gormsby back in the day and never got around to tracking down the whole series! Definitely remember pissing myself at that one though.
He wasn't taken off air either. He created spin offs based off SHH. One season keeps it gold.
I love seeing you a bit uncomfortable or embarrassed watching it. Please watch more of this. 🙂
A prefect is a student who has been chosen to help uphold school rules. We have school captains, vice captains and a group of prefects to help manage the students behaviour.
I went to a private school, we actually watched these in school when we were studying satire. Whilst it is obviously mocking how the school life is, at least back when I was in school it was reasonably accurate; everyone threw about self harm threats, people were very rude to you, call you fat etc when you're actually healthy but you had to just learn to roll with it. There were always the people who thought they were better than everyone else. Keep up the appearance of being prim and proper when the teachers required it but in all honesty outside of supervision it was almost a zoo.
It's pronounced as Natalie :p I blame my parents. Thank you for making a video on Chris Lilley!!!! He's hilarious
Like Little Britain in The UK, these shows were the last of their kind.
@PoshLifeforME Hello you!
Or even darker than Little Britain, Jam. Loved Jam, it was so so wrong but funny in a bad way and we could only show it to friends that we knew would like it too otherwise people would say, "what is wrong with you, you weird f#£k$"?
i just re-lived my teen years watching this, lol. 2013 i was in grade 10. you could still get away with a lot of crude/morbid/politically incorrect humour, even just 10 years ago.
I was in year 10 too and holy hell this show was my shit

Chris Lilley Is an absolute legend 🤣🤣💯
Yip
Chris Lilley is disgusting.
Hi Ryan this is a bit of an Aussie classic. Funny stuff!
Used to love watching all his characters, he plays an older female prison guard in one of his things it’s great! 💯😂
summer heights high had the country in a chokehold for a couple of years. we watched an episode in one of my education uni lectures because it's so fucking accurate.
Lilley is controversial because of, well, you just saw it. Some say it's satire and some say it's deeply offensive trash. Ja'mie is probably one of his least controversial characters though. This one is straight up satire imo.
i love his character Mr G. so funny
The characters name is originally; Jamie but she added the (‘) to make it Ja’mie (Ja’mié, when announcing it, it has no French origins) . Ja’mie show was also a spinoff for her character from Chris’s other shows; Summer Heights High and We Can Be Heroes.
You have got to check out more things Chris Lilly has done. He is pure Aussie comedy gold. Plus, a lot of other celebrities like his satires / characters.
Johana from Tonga. A great perspective on how South Pacific Islanders attended school in Australia.
Check out Angry Boys, Summer Heights High and We Can be Heroes. All excellent shows. He has a skill at portraying the youth culture.
Chris Lily can be described in two words only
INAPPROPRIATE GENIUS
And although the Ja'mie character is a way over the top with vulgarity, Lily truly captures the absolute essence of a snobby stuck up Aussie teenage private school-girl exactly as they are, With frightening accuracy!!!
I've been on public transport at 8am or 3pm when a group of them get on, and its truly as If 10 Ja'mies just got on the train.
I find this is pretty consistent with Australian humor. As an Australian I found this seemed quite fitting to the way Australians talk.
No ego with us Australians we laugh at ourselves..even when a mate tells a joke involving one self .. life's too short to always worry about everything let alone a conversation 😂😂 love your work Ryan.. (Rizza) would be your name in australia ..nickname of the Ryan's 😅
Bit of trivia: this TV show was filmed at Haileybury College, a private school not far from me. In fact I've been there a few times.
The first time I saw Jaime, I was shocked and wondered who the hell this girl was. And I'm an Australian, haha.
Ja'mie (pretentiously pronounced Ja-may to underline her delusional self-obsession) is one of Chris Lilley's most outrageous characters. She took things too far, all the time 😅 That said, her horrible nature seems even worse here because it's a highlights reel.
Every time I watch Ja’mie I remember part of the school filming took place at the Haileybury Keysborough campus (a private school my cousins attended at the time). The school didn’t know the extent of the show and were less than impressed after it aired.
This is a mini-series. The show didn't get cancelled. It is well respected by many of us here in Down Under, especially those who grew up in the early and mid-2000s.
Literally the funniest show I’ve ever seen without trying, also the Ja’mie podcast is hysterical
Welp my high school years are slapping me with nostalgia.
Except my school was an all girl school.
After being cancelled, Chris Lilly has his own streaming channel now, with all his show creations.
I used to be a builders labourer, and the my boss's brother was at a dinner party in Narre Warren, he was quite the boge. He met Chris and asked him about any future projects (he definitely did not use that particular language). Turns out it would be the beginnings of the character 'Jonah'.
I would be surprised if Chris did stand up, as I see it, he's an introvert. By all accounts, that's what my bogan acquaintance expressed.
‘Summer Heights High’ was the original before J’amie!
'We Can Be Heroes: Finding the Australian of the Year', that was the original even before 'Summer Heights High'. Where the Ja'mie character started.
chris lilley is amazing haha. ja'mie was a spin off from a show called summer heights high. jonah from tonga was another spin off from it.
chris lilley typically does shows that feature around 6 characters (all played by him), my personal favourite is angry boys and summer heights high I cant pick between them lol, but the other ones are we can be heroes, and lunatics. summer heights high had such great characters that jonah and ja'mie got their own spin offs from there, which is why they were only short 6 ep series.
highly recommend checking out summer heights high
Lunatics was so funny!
Jonah (dicktation) and Mr Gee are a total must
@@PennyPies Mr G is probably my favourite of all Chris Lilley characters 😂
Jaime appears first in we can be heroes which is before summer heights high
Chris Lilley has many shows quite similar to this one. The most iconic would be Summer Heights High. This is a spin-off of one of the characters.
Ryan is so concerned🤣🤣
I used to be a massive fan of his work, and remember waiting for the night Summer Heights High aired all week.
The show that followed it, The Chaser’s War on Everything was great. But wow the Chris Lilley shows have not aged well at all, and I’m embarrassed that I enjoyed them at the time. There’s a reason he hasn’t released anything for a while.
I'm an Aussie and I have never even heard of this show... this is not the norm but it's fooking funny
All of Chris Lilley's shows were fairly popular at the time they aired on the ABC in Australia.
I guess you either had to be an ABC viewer at the time to have come across them. Or was told by someone else to check them out.
Ja'mie is just a pun about styling your name, Jamie, in a unique way. The French word you are thinking of is j'aime - I like.
1:46 was filmed at my school in melbourne. Btw thats not our school uniform or the name of the school. its funny to see it being reacted to
Yanks are more formal and reserved than they ever care to admit.
Chris Lilley is a certified comic genius who can play iconic roles as high school schoolgirl, Tongan troubled kid, black American rapper, middle aged Japanese mum, ane old granny just to name a few.
Check out Jonah from Tonga, and S.mouse....wildy in appropriate
Most of the great shows have limited episodes and are remembered for decades, faulty towers, keeping up appearances etc etc,
Many homes in Australia with elevators normally have less commercial style ones (I’ve seen a couple with the commercial stainless steel variants). But in saying that. Elevators in homes in general isn’t a massive thing. But it’s more common than one would think 😂😂

Yes as a private school girl (the school shall remain unnamed) I would say this is pretty accurate in my day not so much if any use of the f word but arrogance and self importance reigned supreme.
True story my highschool bestie was private school but we met in a psychiatric hospital! According to her you either walkout a heartless soulless jerk or you need a padded room & life long therapy 😂 she’s doing well now
Oh the memories. As a former private schoolgirl I can confirm all this and can say that in the eighties when I was there it was worse!
Love your reaction to this one!!
Happy New Year Ryan 🎉😍
It’s a miniseries, that’s why it only has 6 episodes, it’s not been cancelled 😂
That character was originally in we can be heroes and summer heights high. He also plays all of the characters in that too. I loved summer heights high. You should check that out! Prefects come under captain and vice captain and just above the students. They’re sort of like a student body but not really. It was just Jamie but she changed it to Ja’mie coz it sounded better.
He wanted to laugh so much more than he let on! 🤣🤣🤣
6 episodes because we don’t flog stuff to death….
This is totally accurate - I went to a similar school in the same area portrayed - except the boarders were the cool in group. It does have an Australian flavour to it - you kind of have to have grown up here to get alot of the jokes. The top Jaime is wearing is a rugby jersey top that is prelevant in private schools and given to you at the end of Year 12 with the school crest and year graduated. A bit like a letterman jacket.
I went to a private school at about this time (outside Sydney) and now live on the North Shore - it’s exaggerated but very faithful in spirit. Some of Chris Lilley’s later work didn’t land as well, but Ja’mie remains a comedic masterpiece.
His character "Jonah from Tonga" was always my favourite. Little bit racist, but funny as.
Chris's characters are very clever he takes the stereotypical truth about people and cultures and exaggerates them to the maximum that's why it's funny because we all know people like the characters
There are only 6 episodes of Ja’mie but there are other characters
Summer Heights High (2007), Angry Boys (2011), Ja'mie: Private School Girl (2013), Jonah from Tonga (2014), and the web series Lunatics (2019). He is a two-time winner of the Logie Award for Most Popular Actor.
I’d have to say I love Mr G - Chris Lilley plays the schools drama teacher but I also like Jonah who is part if the schools Tongan group if trouble makers with Jonah being the worst
Lunatics was my fave 🤣🤣Gavin Gayhurst🤣🤣😂
5:26 Prefect is a senior position at schools in Australia. We have the school captains and voice captains, then the house captains (schools are split into houses like in Harry Potter and it’s for sports stuff), and then a group of prefects. They meet usually once a week before school to go over stuff like fundraisers, the formal (prom) etc
Ja'mie was a character on Chris Lilleys previous show "We Can Be Heros" with 6 "Australian of the Year" contestants. He played all of them He did another show called Jonah From Tonga, one of the other characters.
you literally looked shell shocked!!! hahahaha! 🤣
Chris picked all this up by following around private school girls. This is observation humour at it's best. It makes you squirm to watch it, whilst laughing yourself silly at the same time, but at the end of the day it is, so sad but so true. Another character I like of his is Jonah the south pacific islander and another is Angry Boys with Daniel and Nathan, twins who live on a hobby farm. Chris has gone quiet of late, but I think he was brilliant
Funny thing is, the character mirrors the majority of girls/women seen on youtube. The show might have gotten canned, but delusional bitches still prevail.
My late Aunty and Uncle lived on the 10th floor of an apartment on the surfing beach COLLAROY BEACH (on the north shore). When on holidays in Sydney we stayed with them. You could go down the lift, walk over some large rocks and be on the beach. The catch was the beach was a surfing beach, not a swimming one, so you could wade in to the knees and get knocked over by a huge wave. So we had to walk a distance to swim in the shark proof pool. When looking up the North Shore, think Manly Beach, Dee Why, Whale Beach (I think from memory).
🎉RYAN!!!!! You have to have to have to watch the very Best of Mr G. Also Chris Lilley but far less offensive than Ja’mie and much funnier in my eyes. Mr G is the source of many awesome mems. Mr G, Ja’mie, and Jonah from Tonga are all characters played by Chris Lilley on Summer Heights High. Jonah and Ja’mie were spin off shows from the classic. PLEASE check out Mr G!!!!

I can't believe they showed this on aussie tv 😂 i remember watching it at the time and thinking wtf. This series along with a lot of chris lilleys others have now been removed from netflix etc because it's not well received this day in age. Still a very funny show though, always make me laugh because of how accurate it is. Also as aussies the swearing doesn't even phase us 🤣
So glad you finally found Ja'mie, this is clasic Aussie humour
Omg I love Chris Lilley you should definitely whatch Jonah from Tonga or summer heights high 😂
As an Aussie the name of the show is jamie private school girl shes just pronouncing it differently 😂😂
The individual episodes are just f&%king great..
wait til he finds out about summer heights high and we can be heroes and the fact that all these shows where partially government funded :P
He also did a couple other related series: Summer Heights High and Jonah from Tonga. Their both hillarious. If you can find them somewhere I would reccommend watching them. The latter was really relatable for me because my highschool was really similar. Had a high amount of students from nearby island nations and there were also a lot of students that got expelled from other schools and sent to mine because it was the public school in the area that had to take anyone. It must've been soul-destroying being a teacher at that school, and this is also shown well in both of these shows.
Met a few Jamie's in my time. This show is terrifyingly accurate.
His podcast "Ja'maizing" is absolutely phenomenal. You really get lost in the character when you can't see his face 😂
It didn't get cancelled, Chris Lilley just does single-season shows. Miniseries kind of things. Ja'mie (kind of a pretentious pronunciation and spelling of "Jamie") is in several and lives on today in her very own podcast now in its 5th season (Ja'mazing).
It's best to watch all of Lilley's shows and in the order they came out, because several characters recur in them and evolve over time. Check out:
We Can Be Heroes
Summer Heights High
Angry Boys
Ja'mie: Private School Girl
Jonah From Tonga
Oooooh boy. I went to a Sydney high school and YEP
This show might as well be considered a documentary
Paris Hilton and Naomi Campbell used to watch this show, Chris Liley said that Paris reached out to him on Twitter and said she was a massive fan.
Chris Lilly captures the average self-centred teenage girl. Chris captured the teen's mannerisms extremely well.
Teen girls don't need to go to a private school to behave like this. Our girls went to nice public high schools & I could see similar behaviour in them as they entered their teen years.
I believe most or all of chris lilley's creative ventures are only around 6 parts then he moves on to something new. They are certainly not cancelled. our television standards are somewhat more free/untraditional in Australia than in USA. check out Summer Heights High...this character came from that show along with some other spin offs
