Dangerous Hardware deBugging, i mean deSpidering. :)
bro, if you are going to spend that much money on a cpu, for threadripper, you might as well just get an Epyc and get full server functionality. Also, the PSU fans will only make a lot of noise when they ramp up, which is only on boot up, plus when your power draw increases. With no hard drives, they are probably running at a minimal level.
Agreed, go for a low tier Epyc CPU (or CPU's). Also, *IF* you mod a PSU, be very, very sure it can take the startup load and whatnot of 48 drives, that is mostly where those PSU's are for. (And again, do NOT name it Loki (The god of Mischief), trust me)
@@GravGunner He might not even have to go low tier. Threadripper is going to cost, depending upon sku, anywhere from 1000 to 2500 bucks. If he will buy the top end threadripper, that's in the mid tier of Epyc and a mid tier Epyc will outperform an equally priced Threadripper at all server functionality.
This is why I want to wait till it's released to see how TR stacks up. It's all still options for me, nothing set in stone :)
EPYC server for Odin!!
Plex works better with high speeds for every core than multiple low speed cores. The main reason for this behavior is that the audio is decoded only in one core per stream, no multithreaded so you want the best speed possible per core (this case is ignoring the video which will be decoded/encoded via GPU). I guess the highest Threadripper cpu will equal the lower EPYC cpu in core numbers but with higher clock speeds. We'll see.
There is only one way to replace Zeus and that's with another top tier god like Odin
#Facts
My main Plex server is Valhalla, then I have Odin and Loki as other servers.
Mines Kratos 🙌🏻
I have servers named Odin, Loki, Idun, Heimdall, Freyja, Thor and Frigg which reside in my domain named Asgard.
Zeus is famous for thunder and lightning. Thor is the thunder god in Norse religion.
looks like your server has bugs already LOL
Most cases have "intrusion/open mode" for the fans. The fans will kick down when the lids are on fyi.
Thanks for triggering my arachnophobia right before I go to bed, Jason.
If I had to suffer, you did too lol
Good upgrade! I had bought 3 of these ( just the empty chassis with PSUs) they are certainly loud and honestly the PSUs are not that efficient. Currently I have one fully built with 2 2650v2s and 64 gig of ECC RAM for now. The back-planes have another SAS connector on them for more bandwidth if you so choose to add another card. I highly recommend switching all fans to Noctua, not only because they are quieter, but also much more efficient. But overall, they are great for the price. I currently run Ubuntu with ZFS. Anyway, can't wait to see what you end up doing! I would like to build the other 2 I have and make a Gluster Cluster. Yes, I know I am a data hoarder. P.S. I'm glad I'm not the only one who names servers. I call mine Dire Wolf.
Considering that server was more or less protected by spiders (they at least tried), the name of the fictional spider goddess Lolth comes to my mind.
And because spiders are webbing nets, there would be a metaphorical connection to your network.
For testing you can pull some of the power supplies out and just have 1 or 2 plugged in. My Supermicro box did the same, I have 2-75w but only have 1 plugged in, The other PS is just slightly pulled out.
This isn't even my hardware and I am hyped for what's coming down the pipe for Odin (look Jason, I know it's yours, but until you get a proper name, I will address the unborn god of home servers by its proper name lol).
Odin, Loki, Apollo
all option rn
you could also swap the fans in the power supply's out for 40mm noctua's as well
it might actually be less noisy with the lids on. For example i have a dell poweredge r410 and when you take the lid off it ramps up all fans to 100%. Whatever you do just make sure all those drives are going to be getting enough air to keep them cool, you're gonna have a lot of heat being generated if you have all drives spun up all the time
Awesome. I'm glad you're outgrowing Zeus and going to show us what you come up with. Also, enjoyed the "Entertainment" throughout the video. As always, Jason, I'm happy for you and love watching you on your Journey ...
always a learning exp for me :) thx for watching!
The port you thought was a IDE connection is actually a floppy drive connector. It says so on the top left your looking from the front of the server I think.
Correct, it's a 34 pin floppy controller, not a 40 pin IDE
its scary to see somebody handle this crazy hardware with this little knowledge 🙈
correct. Been a while since I messed with or seen ports that old. But, to derp is human. ;p
@@Bytemybits Funny, that's the exact same thing I say to my Wife, dunno why she gets so mad at me though.
The server will stop screaming at you if you slide out any unused hot-swap power supplies _before_ turning it on. Not sure how many power supplies it needs as a minimum though. Probably two?
No, the PC speaker is what's screaming, it's letting you know you've lost 1 PSUs worth of redundancy from what it's expecting to see. Uptime is king when you move into real servers, hence it having 4 as it is. That's specific to that motherboard, going with a consumer grade board and threadripper is going to get rid of all of that stuff.
Even after powering it on: all my supersh|t servers do the same with less than the designed power supplies plugged in. 'Unmount' unused power supplies.
Holy crap! o.o
That's awesome man. Keep us posted for sure.
It was Indiana Jones like sound effects killing that spider 😂
Hello Jason. You and your Zeus build had inspired me to build my own a couple months ago. Since money is always a concern, I wanted to make sure I had a clear path to upgrade.
Specs:
• ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme = Seriously hoping Threadripper gen 3 will be compatible
• Threadripper 1950X = upgradeable to 3rd gen (fingers crossed)
• 64 Gigs of ECC RAM = upgradeable to 128
• 500GB M.2 SATA for Cache Drive = upgradeable to larger NVME
• 1TB M.2 SATA for Dockers and VMs = upgradeable to larger NVME
• 500 GB M.2 SATA for Games Drive = upgradeable to larger NVME
• 500 GB SSD for Plex Docker & transcode folder = upgradeable to larger, mirrored SSDs
• 12 HDD Array
• PCIE slot 1 - GeForce GTX 1050 Ti = upgradeable to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super
Connected to Gaming VM Running BixBox with lots of arcade, old, and new games. With NVIDIA GeForce Experience, I am able to stream all my games to be played on my Shield and phone/tablets. Super cool!
• PCIE slot 2 -Empty = upgradeable to NVIDIA Quadro P2000
Will be used for Plex
• PCIE slot 3 -SAS Card
• PCIE slot 4 -NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 = upgradeable to NVIDIA Quadro P2000
Connected to my Blue Iris VM. I am waiting to see how the NVIDIA Quadro P2000 does with lessening the CPU load in Blue Iris (Hint, Hint)
• PCIE slot 5 - TV Tuner Card
Connected to Plex
• PCIE slot 6 - Empty = upgradeable to NVIDIA Quadro P2000
Will be used for Video Editing VM. I currently share the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti in slot 1 with the Gaming VM and just run them separately
This machine can play and stream games, movies, live and recorded TV shows, books, audio books, Comic books. Runs multiple VMs. Can edit 4k video and so much more. With this many "super powers", I named it LEGION.
I love your content! Keep up the good work. If you decide to go a similar route with your hardware, feel free to reach out. I'd be happy to share any of the road blocks I ran into and what I did to overcome them.
(P.S. Have you tried the Ombi Docker? Defiantly one of my favorite Plex add-ons)
why kill the spider if you're not even sure if its poisonous?
Server is looking great. I look forward to see what you do to this
8 sticks of ram that is 4 gigs each.. = 16 gigs ram? Math is not a strong spot for ya today eh? I always figured 8 x 4 = 32 :P
He eventually figured it out once the cover was open 😂.
There were spiders involved. He gets a pass... This time lol.
I was still in panic mode at the time. after cracking it open my heart rate was much lower lol
it's 22 gigs not 32. dont try to fool me. XD
@@Bytemybits it was meant as a tease. Laugh.
I got an old family PC running as my plex "server" just because I liked your videos and how you explained everything dude. Also found out I live just over 3 and a half hours from you lol
If you take a power supply out that’s not plugged in or is dead it’ll stop beeping. My server chassis does the same thing so I took one out. Also found online a quiet version of my psu. Not sure if yours has the same.
I had never been this exciting to see an unboxing video
hi just wanna ask, what for that server ?? what are you running??
When you swapped your HDDs from your old server to your new, did you have to do anything special when migrating to the SAS backplane?
I'm asking because I'm using Windows 10 with 8 SATA HDDs connected via SATA.
I'm considering getting the same case that you have with the 48 drive SAS backplane.
I just don't want to have to format my drives when migrating them :s
It’s late here in Kansas you should be going to bed! Lol, love ur vids
…why didn't you just buy the case if you're going to rip out everything?
Probably bought a used case as the hardware is old and was the cheapest option.
was cheaper to buy full old system.
@@Bytemybits ah makes sense 😌
they had the case by itself for cheaper a while back could of saved ~300 as i was thinking about getting it a year ago but never was able to save that much money then
Yeah, old servers in a decent case are way cheaper than buying just the case in most situations, got my SuperMicro 846 chassis with a direct-attach backplane for $150 with an ancient dual-core Opteron server inside... Had to drill and tap a couple of standoff mounts for the dual-Xeon board I put inside, but that is a minor mod compared to some of the things I’ve seen people do to that particular case...
I can hardly wait to see what you come up with.
Bad luck Jason. Orders new server. Receives nest of spiders.
Oh come on. He's literally a million times larger than the spider. I assure you, the spider was far more scared of Jason (and justifiably so!) than Jason was of it. Leave the little guys alone, they're our allies in the struggle against mosquitoes and biting insects.
Check the BIOS, you should have fan and alarm controls that you can use. I'd definitely go with Noctua Industrial fans but... considering your use you might not need to replace the psu's
I have a similar supermicro case and if you disconnect and extract an inch the unplugged psu, it stop beeping.
When you replace the fans look at the Noctua NF-F12 fans. You want static pressure fans to push air through the drives to help cool them.
Welcome to the big leagues 😆 you might be fine with the fans. I worked with mine before I swapped just by turning down the fan duty cycles. The loudest in my case was the cpu fans. I swapped them and its wisper quite.
I didnt swap the power supplies because they idle the fans when they are not under load.
what is the best processor for a plex server? is it better to have more cores or higher clock speed?
Check out passmark.com general rule of thumb, every 2,000 in the score roughly equates to 1 1080p transcode. Get something between 12k and 17k. Add a GPU for hardware transcoding and Bob's your Uncle.
So i have a full 42U rack filled with rack servers to mess with. Thought it would be fun to run Unraid, vsphere, freenas etc.. after a few months of extreme noise (though it was in the basement so i didnt care, i saw my electricity bill. All my servers are now shutoff except for one unraid box. Have fun with your heat and electricity bill once you fill up those drives
I shall be doing the same soon
orly? full blown, enterprise grade madness?
hells yeah
I don't know if I missed it in the video, but you purchase this case from Ebay?
Case cover off equals full power to fans on Servers. Case cover on makes them quickly quiet down after self test. Also, many can detect fans not plugged in/failed and will ramp remaining fans extra fast to compensate.
Always wear hearing protection near a rack room.
keep in mind that all servers go full blast with the fans until POST is completed. then they lower them alot. but they are still loud. that's a nice setup and most ppl buy these for the low price and the included backplane/expander. are you going full 48 disks on it?
Careful when replacing server fans, static pressure tends to be a lot lower on consumer fans. That said, it's probably not going to be hot enough to cause issues.
With that sponser segway from burning the truck. I thought it was a Linus Sponser Segway. 😂😂
Nice 4U!!! Sounds like my Proliant when it starts. It should calm down a bunch, after everything comes up.
Replace those case fans, and those low profile heatsinks if keeping the mainboard. But I would leave those PSUs as they are. Once you have an OS and Bios setup correctly on your build, they should ramp down based on load.
Also, redundant PSUs are hella expensive, so why replace it with a basic ATX unit if you have proper equipment in place already?
not sure yet! I expected them to be louder than they are. It depends on how compatible everything is once I start rebuilding it.
@@Bytemybits I'm willing to bet a 4 way redundant PSU in a 48bay server chassis can handle any threadripper or epic build you dream up. Plus it's just plain cool to us hardware nerds. I'd wager there's a way to shut up that tone if you don't want all four plugged in, too.
@@edwardgreenjr167 ohh yesss
OH GOD dont slide it across the carpet!!
Case is grounded with 4 different power supplies.. I think it'll survive..
yeah Im not worried about anything in it with that
@@mark2220 Except thats not how grounding works. The power supplies need to be plugged in to be grounded. He slid it across the carpet without the power supplies plugged in, which means there was no ground.

@@maddmethod5880 came here for THIS! Also overpaid for the box
I am curious what OS he will use on that since to my understanding Unraid has a 30 drive limit
I heard he's going Freenas...
Not really... I tried
Unraid I bet. 1) he’s a fan boy 2) he’s been tweeting with Unraid 3) he can still have unassigned devices in Unraid but they will not be part of his array
I seen the pro says unlimited, so there is a soft cap of drives on unraid?
unraid. 30 drive limit sucks but Id rather have too much room and extra space for unassigned devices.
unRAID only has a 30 drive limit inside the parity protected array.
When you replace the 120's, would the raid-card get enough airflow?
Anders Andersen it doesnt need much airflow it should run cool enough on its own
@@aemonblackfyre4159 Interesting, what raid card do you run
these cards usually do rely on high air flow cases. But for the work load it will have, I think I will be okay. Zeus lost a lot of air flow when I silenced it and the card have been perfect.
@@Bytemybits I hope so, it will be great to see the project when it is finished
The beeping is because there is no power to the other power supplies just pull them out . Go into Bios and change fan control to 4-pin Server, assuming you have 4-pin fans and it will NOT be loud.
I vote you name it Black Widow, also thanks for balls of blue.
IS it a real weapon (which) at 16.13?
Damn thats a nice server case jason :) This project will be really interesting..
Just build a single socket Epyc server it'll shred TR and can still get serious compute performance in a single socket or go duel Epyc for that crazy Octo channel ram setup.
Man that's bad ASS! 48 bay's!! CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How loud is it with the covers on?
What do you for daily job to have the time and income to do all these cool ?
He's your friendly neighbourhood spiderman
I heard he’s a hot yoga instructor.
I've heard that his parents won the lottery, so he was born into great riches. And, someone else said that he inherited a few million in a trust fund.
Poe Lemic He wouldn’t need credit cards maxed if this was true
@@bigbigspoon Hes a Photographer/Videographer in Kansas.
I think you should try the new server out as a Plex server just for the hell of it until you can get the other motherboard you want. You might be surprised with its performance. As for the noise, maybe you could build some sort of muffler system out of something that would absorb the noise. Before you scrap the factory fans you may want to run some sort of air pressure and airflow tests. I mean the manufacturer put those specific fans in there for a reason. To keep 48 drives cool. You could build some sort of soundproof enclosure around you rack to absorb the noise.
they are L series Xeons. He will be surprised - by its lack of performance.
@@wpgspecb I'm not saying it would be great as a Plex Server, but it would allow him to test out the SAS controller and the mainboard for all the hard drive interfaces. Because if the SAS controller is crap or the mainboard for the drives is bad. He might as well send it all back.
Please check if your blackplane supports your 10T drives. Maybe it only support 2T drives. 🙂 And you need high pressure fans with so much drives.
Are you still planning on using Unraid? If so, how are you going to get around the 30 drive limit that the pro license has?
What case is it and where did you get it from?
ebay.to/2kcW5E6
@@Bytemybits thank you for the link. Will definitely look into that as a possible solution to my dilemma.
You should only need one or two of those power supplies to run it. You can partially unseat the other two and the beeping should stop.
I also found server grade hardwares loud in homey environment. Hence I prefer tower casing with 120mm fans standard
PETA is going to be pissed about that spider....
This is not so much a comment but a question. Was wondering where you purchased that server
ebay.to/2kcW5E6
Do you have a part number on the Drive Caddies? I can't find these anywhere. I do have the .stl file to print them but that's not ideal.
Jason to avoid the alarm tone you need to pull the extra power supplies out before powering on the server then it won’t see them and won’t alaramw
List were u bought the server please
ebay.to/2kcW5E6
Some servers may need to use both or all of the psus in order to get their fan spin on lower rpms. Just as my fujitsu servers and netapp ds enclosures
So where does all the media come from for all this storage?
You should call your new server:
TITAN
It slides goober. Haha hidden screws. Loki definitely has some air flow!! Yup sounds like a vacuum. Looking forward to seeing this bad boy built.
Before you buy new hardware for that chassis.
Make sure you test all the drive bays to make sure the backplane is working. To do so the easiest way is to boot the server into the raid utility and insert a drive into a slot and wait for it to be detected, once it is move it to the next slot.
So I have one of those Supermicro cases with redundant power supplies, though not that exact one. Yes, all of the PSUs have to be plugged in or it screeches at you, BUT with mine, I can take the extra power supplies out completely and the screeching stops! So if you only want one or two of the PSUs instead of all 4, just take two or three of them out, and it shouldn't screech. At least that is how mine works.
Name sugestion : Arachnid
I love it! But Aranea would be even more _a propros_. :-)
OMG...that thing is a Beast!!! And you sir, are hilarious!!
the fans on that cases usually go hell when u open the lit ... there is a microswitch ... that tells the system ... we need AIR
When buying storage what is a reasonable price per TB you go for?
Vect0r88 $15.90 per TB.... but it’s gonna come down to space eventually. The more you can pack into one bay the better. Typically 10 TB hard drive’s for 159. #mothershucker
yeah the $16/TB has been a sweet spot for me. (10TB WD drives for $160)
Yeah...could have added a Back to the Future reference at 12:35. Would have been appropriate.
damnit...
Probably change the fan speeds in the bios and maybe gets quieter after boot. I have a 2U4N that was too loud. Found setting in the bios and after boot is tolerable.
Time to order 48 x 10TB shuckable WDs
Are you sure that backplane can handle larger than 4tb drives? In the listing it states up to 192tb of storage which is 48x4tb=192tb.
yes. it is currently preclearing 4x10TB drives as I type.
That thing sounds like a Harrier taking off lmao.
Classic Byte My Bits - starts with fear of spiders, ends with assault rifle in the background :)
Just your everyday AR-15. With the crossover furniture on it. Love it.
If you make a video for the internet and don't trigger someone...did you really make a video?
Got me the same server on ebay for 200 2 months ago the power supply are super noisy been trying to find replacement power supply for it with no luck. Mine came with just power supply 3 of them and the sas hba i had to put the rest dual xeon e5-2680v3, 98gig of ram, asrock rack EP2C612 WS, lsi 9265 8i, 10gb dual lan. You cant put a normal power supply the HBA plates for the 48 drives use very specific power pins you would have to make custom cables the good thing the manufacture does make all that info available but i just think too much work. The Beeping is because not all the power supplies are plugged in there's a button in front of case to turn of the beeping but it comes back on every boot.
If you have all plugged in it balances the power
Like it just for the spider moment.
Please do an os installation and setup guide
So where did you get the case from?
ebay.to/2kcW5E6
@@Bytemybits Thank you Sir
I'm interested to see how you get on with Ryzen 3rd gen with unraid, historically Ryzen and unraid have not played nicely due to kernel issues.
unRaid has a 30 device limit, if he plans on populating all 48 drives it won't be unRaid. I fear for Jason's learning curve going from unRaid to FreeNAS.
Was hoping you would leave a link to where you bought the case
Ken Hargrave I see you want some spiders delivered to your house as well😂
ebay.to/2kcW5E6
@@Bytemybits Hopefully you didn't pay that amount in the listing as decommissioned 45 drives machines can be had for MUCH less.
Get yourself some of the be quiet! SILENTWINGS 3 PWM 120mm HIGH SPEED (BL070). Especially for the front fans if you can see them through the front grille. They push like 73 CFM.
i'd leave the psu's if i could but i'd definitely water cool the thread ripper with a 360mm rad, even if it was an aio. But ideally a custom loop. Lots of room for a pump reservoir
what is the name of that server rack?
Kool shirts Mr. Bits!
Puts server on carpet - proceeds to drag it on the carpet creating ESD... LOL - also I really like the concept of replacing semi-enterprise hardware with consumer hardware thats you intend to modify to the hilt! Seems like a good reliability option. /s
Some servers are much quieter after the OS boots and starts to control fan speeds.
dont put a "stop to that" the whole point of that beep is to tell you PSU faulty et... the reason for 4x PSU's is to power all 48 drives, depending on how many drives your going to be using :)
Im doing something like this and the tips i can give are aquaero fan controller is amazing and watch out for heat. All my components are OK but the heat generated in my basement is unbearable right now.
Ive never used a supermicro server, but i know my Dell's will run the fans at 100% if the case is open
48 bays would be nice. I just don't really have the space for a rackmount setup - I really wish Lian Li would update the PC-D8000 which I have - it wouldn't take much to optimize it for more hard drive bays.
Maybe that'll be a mod I do one day...
Changing the motherboard on this would be really stupid.
And since the coolers on the cpu's are passive, you NEED that high airflow fans.
Yeah those are definitely active coolers on the CPU. There are side blowers on them.
