The History of the Ford Super Duty

  • Since 2020, power output on the 6.7L Powerstroke has remained the same, atleast thus far into 2022. But, with Ford's typical upgrade schedule every 2 to 3 years, I'd expect to see the Super Duty upgraded again either later this year or next year.

I had the entire history of the Super Duty name itself and previous trucks with that name as part of the video script, but I ended up omitting it during the video editing process because I felt like focusing on just the modern Super Duty truck would help with clarity.
It might be confusing because the Super Duty name was previously related to a handful of engines they offered back in the day. The name also referred to trucks with those aforementioned engines in the F-Series, as well as some other truck variants Ford offered back then. And then the name was used on the F-Super Duty chassis cab truck.
Because of all that, I felt it was best to focus on the "modern" Super Duty truck, rather than the full history of where and how the name was used by Ford.

I would venture to guess the public utility I work for has about 1500 Super Duty cab and cassis across the fleet with various assortments of builds. Some are manlifts, others are super structures, while others are simple companion trucks with bin boxes. The garage I am assigned to maintains about 30 different Super Duty configurations.
Aside from the diesel engines you discussed in other videos, the trucks have held up really well. Although none of the gas engines have ever impressed our drivers. There aren't many gas engines in the fleet, but the few we have just don't hold a candle to the diesel equipped trucks.
One of the coolest things Ford ever did was install upfitter switches in their trucks to make adding accessories much cleaner. We no longer have to find a place to cut holes in the instrument panel to add switches and run wiring; the switches and wiring are aready there. I believe three of the switches are 15 amp while the other two are 20 amp. It makes for a clean install of PTOs, beacons, and other things a user might need.
Of all the things I could complain about, Ford made cabin filter replacement a complete pain in the a$$ on their trucks. Since the fleet I am assigned to is in the desert, cabin filters last about a month before needing replacement. With 30 of those in our local fleet it seems I am changing a filter at least once a day. Of course I could just leave out the filter, but the users really enjoy clean air in the cab.

I had a 7.3 Powerstroke dually, and loved it. Wish I had been smart enough to keep it. If buying a used diesel it's better to get a 99 to early 03 model, or jump all the way to the 6.7 engine in 13. A bulletproofed 6.0 is a pretty good truck, but folks that undertook that cost seem to be hanging on to them. I can't blame them, a new one costs more than a lot of people paid for their house. I'm 66 years old. I've owned trucks my entire life. I've had Chevy's , Ford's and a Toyota. My 2007 Ford F350 5.4L Super Duty utility truck is hands-down the best truck I have ever owned. I bought it new off the lot in 2006 for $38,000. It now has 184,600. The only thing I do different than what the manual says is I put Marvel Mystery oil in the oil and gas. I drive it hauling thousands of pounds of lumber, materials and equipment to Flagstaff from The Bay area a couple of times a year. It has never failed me or stranded me in the middle of no where. Once you replace the stupid 2-piece spark plugs this engine is bomb-proof. The Marvel is from an Aviator Hero of mine who had an amazing story with his aircraft engines. I'll leave it at that. If you use it in your engines they will last forever.

It was a lesser used option, but it did remain. And the 6.2 is still an option today. The 7.3 replaced the 6.8 as an option, and the 6.8 is no longer used anywhere in Ford's current lineup.

I’m a 6.4 power stroke guy ,,I admit the 6.4 is definitely problematic,,when it’s stocked,,the new emission system on the 6.4 known as the DPF was a big mistake,,it was there first time they put a DPF on a diesel,,but when the 6.4 is deleted with small or any tunes they are very reliable with great TQ and hp ,,the 6.4 is very underrated,, all though the pistons on the 6.4 are made out of aluminum that’s one of the problems that can’t be fixed with the original pistons but the 6.4 can handle up to 1200hp and 1880TQ until the pistons crack ,,785hp is not enough hp to crack the pistons ,,all in all the 6.4 definitely deserves to be in the top 5 most reliable diesels.

Aside from the massive 440 hp and 925 ft/pounds of torque, a diesel can outlast a gasser 2x to 3x all tbings being equal. I am retured and love road trips and the power to overcome mountain passes, headwinds, and roll effortlessly across the plain states is so nice. Crossing Eisenhower Pass in Colorado at close to 12,000 feet elevation? No sweat. Coming back down steep grades for miles ajd miles? Just press the exhaust brake and let the auto exhuast braking take over. Crossing New Mexico in the summer at 109° heat? No sweat. It was made to do that pulling a 15,000 trailer so going empty is no problem. Signs say turn off A/C to grind up The Grapevine in the summer? Who cares! Keep the A/C on and drive up in comfort.
