  • Voice teacher Sam Johnson's reactions to a compilation of Ariana Grande, Adele, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Sia, Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, and Mariah Carey.
    I hope this observation on how they sing helps you figure out how the voice works better, so you can learn how to make smart choices in your own voice.

    The first Sia one just had the backing track of the chorus way louder than her actual voice, so she was basically just "singing" (more like speaking) the low end.

    @jennfeeley1410 Před 5 lety +680

    So I don't understand 90% of what you're saying because I don't sing. What I take away from this is that people who shit on singers who don't play an instrument should shut up. Based what you've shared there are just as many things to learn when training your voice as there are when learning an instrument. The voice IS an instrument.

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 Před 5 lety +20

      Jenn Feeley it absolutely is an instrument- and it can be a lot more finicky than other instruments. Even just what you eat or drink can change your sound- I used to take a shot of port before performing, if I didn’t have enough warm up time 😁
      But because it’s biology, it changes from hour to hour. Half of the talent of being a singer (imo) is learning how to work with whatever your voice is doing on that particular day. Some days my voice is huskier than others, and it’s better to lean in to a little more vibrato (those are the best days for singing the blues). Other days, my voice can be quite clear- and I’ll usually go in for some classical or traditional Gàidhlig folk. Obviously, I can change up what I sing because I’m no professional, but it just goes to show just how much your voice can change from day to day.
      I don’t know of any other instrument that’s as variable as the voice- wood or metal might change a little over time, but they don’t have those big day to day changes, because they aren’t biological. It’s why I think singing is the hardest instrument to play.

    • @darb6808
      @darb6808 Před 5 lety

      People who play and instrument and sing are worth more than people who just sing as musicians probably 7 times out of ten. If you are a singer who doesn't play an instrument, doesn't know any music theory, and/or cannot write more than a simple melody, then it's not much to brag about, because SO MANY MUSICIANS are WAY more impressive than that, that is, if they are more than just a singer. I agree that one shouldn't crap on just singers, but just singers are a menace to the musical scene. It's really hard to deal with a front man, especially if they think they are more important or impressive than they think they are. Because while I was taking time off of whatever I was doing to learn music and an instrument, they were singing every time they showered, and then BOOM! . . . Another singer . . . Just like the last one . . . To a band a singer is only worth more than a bass player, because singing is just less impressive than the guitar, or the keyboard, or the drums, and so many people do it.

    That said, I resonated with what you said about Mariah Carey’s voice changing due to pregnancy and hormones. My kids are 3 and 1 and my voice was greatly affected by pregnancy, hormones, postpartum stuff, lack of singing, etc. I’m essentially having to re-learn to sing as things have shifted, body is different, abdominal muscles are still mush, etc. I get winded doing vocal exercises I did in college. I’m improving but it is disheartening knowing where I was when I finished grad school and where I am now. Can you suggest any exercises specifically geared toward my situation?

Hence why people usually tend to think zayn is the best singer of the five. they falsely associate high notes with a better technique

    This was fun. You know your stuff and I found it so interesting. My dad studied voice for almost 30 years. He was a tenor and sang opera but he knew the voice as an instrument just as you do. You should sing like your speaking voice without strain.

    Looked like some of those performances they were struggling to hear monitor mix, especially belieber holding the ear phone to his ear. Bad sound, is horrifying for any performer no matter what level or platform

      I don't understand why they chose that clip, I think she has done poorer performances

    Every singer has an off day, people seem to forget that and brutally judge them. They can't be perfect 24/7. Great video as always Sam I love how kind you are and informative ^_^ Very handsome too ;) lol.

    I really love the way you give constructive insight into what went wrong in those performances and then praise what they did right in the other performances. You’re just too awesome Sam and this world don’t deserve you 💖
