- India occupies a strategic position in the Indian Ocean Region, as it sits between its main bottlenecks. In particular India controls the Western gateway into the Malacca strait through the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. This strait is China's main strategic weakness, which makes this choke point of critical importance in the possible confrontation between the US and China. In this video we will analyze US and China's reliance on this strait and we will try to answer two major questions. How does India control China's biggest weakness? How does this influence a possible US - China conflict?

Frankly Indias military budget makes sense.The threat of a land attack is real.And the USA could have a 5% army budget and still be fine, there is NO THREAT, i repeat, no threat of an attacking land force.So ofcourse they allocate more to the navy to control the world and secure their hegemony.Excellent production btw.

Pakistan conventional force is not on par with India's and I would pay good money to see how the Chinese army could keep supply lines across the Himalaya for a large scale land operation. I think that the Indian budget is heavily skewed towards the army whereas could exert more deterrence by improving its air and naval capabilities.
It's mostly towards salary/pension.

You neglected the role of Australia as an Indian Ocean power close to the North Eastern trade route choke points. A power that's just announced it's acquiring nuclear submarines, and a power that's developing a closer military relationship with India.
It's also interesting to see that he said that ASEAN would stay neutral during a US-China showdown when most of them have a axe to grind against China's nine-dash-line policy in the south China sea. They probably wouldn't enter a war outright but I could definitely see them closing ports to China

1. India has signed treaty with US so that each other can use others bases for refuelling.
2. India has also signed another pact with Americans for satellite image sharing.
3. Malabar exercise which you covered has significant importance. It's annual exercise conducted specially to counter the Chinese in IOR region.
4. Indian Navy expansion is happening at a brisk space. 2 operational AC by 3-4 months. Also there is a repeat order for another AC. Most probably Rafael-m fighters. Though we can't match the pace at which Chinese are building ships in numbers, our planners clearly know where to draw the Chinese and where we have advantage.
5. Brahmos missiles has almost 100% kill rate if 2/more is fired. Also now they have extended range of 450- 800 km and near hypersonic speed. Navy ordered 200 more additional warheads for its frontline ships
6. Andaman islands are considered as unsinkable ship. Indian planners know the very fact and is trying to make this impenetrable fort specifically to counter the Chinese. There are also many airfields coming up here.
Thanks K, I mostly agree with your points. I think getting IOC for the new AC will be a lengthy process since there are many new complex systems on board, not to mention train the crews that will operate on board. But I think India's domestic military shipbuilding is making leaps, and the development of complex platforms like nuclear subs and the new AC takes time. Thanks again for your input!

India may block the Malacca Strait but Iran and Pakistan are allies of the Chinese. Iran might have something to say about their oil being blocked from being shipped to China. Also China can block the rivers in Tibet from reaching India.

India definitely needs to invest more into it's navy and naval defense. The Andaman islands are the perfect point to block the block the Malaca Strait from the Indian ocean.
China knows this which is partially why they increase tensions along the Himalayas. This convinces the Indian government to worry more about their Ground forces rather than Naval forces. But the longer this trend continues, the more this will work to India's detriment.
Great video as always Kamome. One interesting video to think about in the future maybe to talk about Indonesia and it's geopolitical importance. I feel like they would be very important in a future conflict with China.
Totally agree. China much rather have India focused on its land border in the Himalayas than on the Malacca strait. And data (India's military budget allocation) shows that India hasn't fully committed to a stronger Navy yet, buttressing the army's capabilities first.

India is in a lose-lose scenario here. If they reduce their land forces, then they risk losing more territory to China AND Pakistan. But, if they don't buttress the Navy, they lose out in the long term. This reminds me of what the French Govt told Montcalm when he asked for reinforcements during the 7 years war: "Eh, monsieur, when the house is on fire one cannot occupy one’s self with the stable".
Needless to say, the French lost out in the long term and lost the North American continent.

They could also rely on allies like the US to cover their naval weaknesses if they are willing. They may very well decide to allow a US base in the Andaman and Nicobar islands in addition to their own bases. It's obviously a complicated game to play though and introduces it's own set of advantages and drawbacks, it just depends on how big of a threat they feel China is, how willing they are to cooperate with a strong power like the US that tends to push it's weight around in relationships, and if it can afford to spend more on it's own navy so as to not neglect it.
China understands the geostrategic importance of Andman and Nicobar Island. Thus, to distract India from developing this island region it often stokes up tension along the Himalayan border either directly or through its surrogate Pakistan so that india keeps spending it's defence budget on building infrastructure along the border area in the anticipation of a war, instead of investing in bolstering its naval power. To my mind China has no real interest in Arunachal or Kashmir region but they have deliberately kept the border issues alive so that they can keep India distracted. Meanwhile they are looking for alternatives to Malacca so that in case of a war their supply route isn't choked.
Once India is developed enough, there won't be a place to hide for China. We will soon be in a position to choke all its trade routes.

China will need to devote 30-40% of their naval assets to defend disputed areas in the SCS leaving only 60% to use in the IOR. A long and tenuous supply chain is required to supply that 60% which can be interdicted at various points along the route by the IN either at the Malacca straits, around SL or near Gwadar.

American working in Edison NJ here. Biggest Indian point of arrival in US and I can say Indian ppl seem like a very natural ally for US In terms of ideology, business, and democratic values among other things. Indian migrants to US have many second gen children at this point and they are extremely successful at integration as well as retaining their identity. Lovely people with amazing culture and manners. I say this pretty much universally about the entire population here. My recently moved in next door neighbor is a young Christian pastor from India, his wife and 3 children and they are wonderful neighbors. It would make me very happy to see the two nations develop even closer relationship and India continue to progress as they are an invaluable bulwark of certain shared values but without being overly influenced by some of the more decadent aspects of US culture since they have their own. Maybe the most ideal example of two nations who share just enough interests without disturbing each other from their own goals.

- At 04:27 The main issue that happened in the last years is that very large LNG and oil Tankers face two main issues in traversing the Panama Canal. Draft requirements and long waiting lists. Tankers requires deep drafts and the Panama Canal shallower point is in Gatineau Lake. It’s depth has varied in the past related to weather and rains availability. The second issue is related to the system adopted at Panama. Only a certain amount of Ships can safely traverse the locks each day. Thus there’s a booking system. Ships that do not book in advance, and we’re talking about months, must wait for weeks for their turn. The increasing number of vessels and of demand for oil and gas products creates a bottleneck at Panama. As you can read in the resources provided, some shipping companies prefers the longer Indo-Atlantic route for these reasons. We are talking about a minority of the trade, but a significant one.

Really good analysis, explanation, and very impressive animation. 👏 I was stationed on Diego Garcia, I can tell you that I agree it should belong to those who lived there as descendents of the slave labor and were then deported. That being said, it is so valuable to UK and US naval and air operations that there is 0 chance they will let that go even with international rulings. It puts bombers in range of alot of area and is a good place to refuel and refit.

The Malacca Strait is a weakness that China have that India controls. I’m interested in a future video from Kamome that goes in depth on a real big weakness that India have that China controls. It can be very bias to talk about the fear of one side without talking about the fear that NATO and India have.

The Brahmaputra river which irrigates most of Northeast India and Bangladesh runs its upper half through China, who have built a hydroelectric dam near the great bend. In theory, This and similar dams can be used to cut off the flow of the river or cause downstream flooding.
Realistically though, this is all kinda pointless. China, India, and Pakistan are all nuclear powers and their leadership knows not to escalate too far.
Reason China (and also Russia) kept junta Myanmar and also Pakistan as useful puppet or at least controlled partner cuz of Indian ocean access.
China can dam the rivers in Tibet that flow to India but I agree trying to starve a country leads to nuclear war.

China could pass Sunda Strait, Makassar and Lombok Strait and also Banda Sea and Arafuru Strait and those strategic geo located in Indonesia. So, it would be useless for India to blockade Malacca Strait when China could pass Indonesian Choke points
Andaman & Nicobar Islands is a strategic boon, to India that ancient Indians didn't know of. Thus, this very important fact is needed to be factored in, in the strategic picture of India - reflected in her foreign policy. The British who ruled India knew this importance and maintained their strong hold on the North Indian Ocean from Suez canal to Singapore. From New Delhi, their Viceroy could monitor their Imperial possessions - Egypt once, Aden (now incorporated in Yemen), the Gulf countries as their Malayan settlements well. They also oversaw their possessions on African coast. Their (Imperial) hold was necessary for the continuity of their Empire. India (post independence) didn't continue following their cue. Thus India by default, invited all big powers' presence in this (maritime) region & the consequent rivalries, detrimental to her national interests finally. Yet, it is never too late for India.
Wrong. The Chola empire was a naval empire & they had strongholds in the Andaman & Nicobar - in fact they are the first ones to document contact with the present day Sentinelise tribe.

But it’s important to contextualize the power balance in each of these countries. For example many cites Hambantota port in Sry Lanka as one of the biggest “pearl”, but India is quite influential on the Island. However we’re seeing an increasingly stronger China’s presence in Myanmar and Bangladesh. In my opinion China would gain to have India focused on its land borders than on the seas.

Interesting analysis. But everyone know Malacca Strait is inside the Malaysia's and Indonesia's territory. And everyone know most of shipping line in Malacca Strait is through the main corridor of 6th Degree Channel (inside Indonesia's EEZ) rather than Andaman Sea.
China also doesn't really need the Preparis Channel since they can do trading with neighbor countries through land routes. For trading with Europe, Middle East and African, China's shipping line could also through Sri Lanka's EEZ to avoid India's EEZ. That's why China build ports in Sri Lanka, and put Sri Lanka into China's debt trap.
This means, India don't have significant role or control on Malacca Strait. It's Indonesia, not to mention that Sunda Strait is also inside the Indonesia's territory.

Samuel Huntington's as well as Francis Fukuyama's books are passe, now. The only area these theses are applicable now is where Muslims live in great numbers. In that again, like the Roman Empire (or Christianity, for that matter) splitting in two, practice of Islam has also two versions - one is the main Middle Eastern version (Arabian-Iranian-Turkish cultures), the other is totally (ethnically) different Eastern version with greatest number in Indonesia (followed by, in India), Bangladesh & Malaysia. Samuel Huntington's facts and predictions are so accurate that he even foresaw the second take over of Taliban 30 years ago. Islam goes in cycles. Ata turk had banned Islam in Turkey and Turkey almost became a modern country, and now it's going back. Same with Afghanistan, Iran, all were extremely liberal countries 70 years ago after a long period of Islamic darkness.
South East Asia is better because still there are large minorities left there, and huge non islamic population with Chinese and Indian civilizational connections, and as islam becomes more and more in majority , their downward spiral will start. The prosperity you see in the region is only because the United States wanted it to be, and unquestioned, unequal relationship with the United States in return for complete access to the US market.
