- Shift work is a health risk and it should be taken seriously. It’s been associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers, and early cognitive decline. In this “Ask Jim” episode of If Our Bodies Could Talk, senior editor James Hamblin attempts to help a police officer approach shift work with at least some peace of mind.

I worked a full year with my company on nights and eventually went to the 2nd shift (3:330pm to midnight). I thought working during the day would make me happy. Well... after 6 months on the 2nd shift I decided to go back to straight nights. I miss the peace and quiet, getting all my errands done during the morning, having no traffic to deal with.
If you stay on nights and not alternate, you'll be fine because you'll eventually switch you're sleep schedule over fully. The alternating shifts are what's hard to do and hard on your health
Rotation work shifts will definitely cause dark undereyes, unhealthy eating habits, irregular sleep patterns and crankiness....oh extreme weight gain. That was me before i stopped that mess
9 years.3,2,1 shift rotation each week.Kinda dunno who i am anymore.
I worked night shifts in a very busy local emergency room and goddammmm. I was working that gig at from age 26-28 and man I swear. I honestly feel like I aged terribly in those two years.
Work day-time. Avoid night shifts. They're soul crushing. Night is meant for sleep.
Be seriously careful if you're doing these sort of shifts long term... working in a bakery I have seen and felt the health impacts first hand. Take care of yourself.
Worked nightshift for a long time. My job is not peaceful by any means, but there's a certain calmness to working nights when your off. From about 10:00PM-6:00AM nobody calls, nobody texts you, nothing is expected of you, nothings open (besides the few gas stations), just you, unbothered with all that time, you can get a lot of things done to work on yourself.
The whole video I was just fixated on his sleeve buckles.
I love Dr. Hamblin's sense of humor
I work nights testing asphalt at the plant, and I can tell you first hand it screws with your brain hard. I feel disconnected and tired even though I sleep 8 hrs during the day.
Yeah I work 12 hour night shifts going on 3 year. I have negative thoughts a lot and I sleep 4-6 hours range. But when I have a good day of sleep I feel like I can achieve anything!
This is very helpful for me. I can never sleep at night properly, and I always have to sleep during the day. I'm glad this video talks about the health risks, but also suggests ways to help keep your body safe. Thank you!
I do alternating day night weeks. It takes me a long time to adjust to either of these, especially days coming from nights. This means that most of the week is actually spent adjusting to the schedule, instead of thriving in the work environment and being productive. In comes irritability, fatigue, poor decision making, etc.. Basically, this is dogshit for my health and the people around me.
Listening to this guy speak cured my insomnia.
Night shift nurse here! Thanks for the quick, funny explanation!
This is one of my favorite videos. I am, however, worried I'm going to die now, and also commit acts of vandalism.
DUDE..
just got a job with UPS waking up at 3 a.m. everyday, glad to hear my new schedule won't kill me. also, always amazed how young this SENIOR editor at the atlantic is
I just decided today to quit my job. I am part time relief. I get a four day schedule each week that covers all three shifts! I often work three shift rotations in a week, a day shift, an evening and a couple of over nights. I'm tired, irritable and depressed most of the time.
