Only work night shift if you're married with a wife/husband and kids to support. No single human being should ever work nights as a career choice. I did it for 2 from the ages of 26 to 27 y/o missing out on a lot of family gatherings and friends' once in a lifetime events. Even when the money and overtime was good, it drained my soul to have all this money but no social life.

I feel you on that. When I was on nights in my late 20's, I never fully got used to them, but didn't mind them. But the biggest problem? I was soulless. People didn't wanna be around me.. ever. I was always groggy or mean and eventually it led to not having a social life.

Don't work shifts if you want to stay fit! it took me 2 years of finnishing shifts to stop feeling tired and yawning constantly!

Shift work is literally a killer. It will ruin a person. Especially when doing it for years.
When doing shift work when your not working you cant function in a normal way.

I have for 9 years.. doing great.
You have to be disciplined and sleep when you should. Most people can't do it. Won't do it.
      But it pays really well.

When I started as a 911 operator, I had to work nights (6p-6a). I knew this going in so I prepared myself, plus I was younger. I did almost 3 years on nights and never fully got used to them. I had gained weight (even though I worked out regularly), and my health was in a decline so bad I was forced to take all kinds of meds. I had finally gotten on days and never looked back. Been on days for 5 years). I lost all the weight I had gained, and was back in good health and off meds. Just recently, I was forced to go back to nights because we're very understaffed and while on nights for just a week, I experienced a medical issue and was hospitalized. But now that I'm clear to go back to work, I still have to go to nights. Hopefully nothing happens medically.
Night shift kills your body. Even if you're a night person and like night shift, your body will never fully adjust to that. The average night shift worker gets between 3-5 hours of sleep and has numerous medical issues. If you have to work nights, hopefully it wouldnt be for long, otherwise your body will start shutting down and you'll have to make a choice.

I did shift work (television transmission controller) one shift 14:00 to 23:00 and then the following week the graveyard shift from 23:00 to 05:00 with an hour's drive each way from home to work. I did this from age 55 to 64 - it has left lasting damage particularly with anxiety and panic attacks.

I got rotating shift once a week and it is killing me. I frequently get sick: feelimg migraine with severe throbbing pain in the head, which sends a pain wave all the way to the stomach. Then my stomach starts to feel convulsions, making me throw up non-stop. If I throw up 3+ times, I get so week that I can't stand up from the floor. I end up lying down and waiting on the floor to either feel better or keep throwing up...and sometimes I feel like I'm about to pass out.. To summarize up my condition: dizzy, painful feeling in the head AND in the stomach PLUS throwing up multiple times within one day.
I told my supervisor it's hard for me. Yet they don't change my schedule. Maybe they take the word "hard" as meaning just "inconvenient timewise"? But when I say "hard to handle", I mean I feel horrible physically. Any way, I decided to wait till I get sick again and go to a doctor immediately to actually get some report. Then show several reports to work as proof that their schedule is literally making me sick. Several times I left work due to sickness and they had a missing station with noone to cover, which they hate. They lose a lot of money when the station is empty. But I lose a lot of money too when I go to urgent care and copay &50 just for visit, then pay more for strong anti-nausea medicine, plus I lose money by not working(we don't have paid sick days). They still don't want to change my schedule. I am thinking about changing the job:(

Informative. I work rotational shifts; I actually believe that your better off being on permanent nights than swapping.

  • @evenmoney

If you do the shift work for the money, save the money and then get out or tranfer to a job without the shifts. It's not worth the damage you do to yourself. You'd have to be a lunatic to do it for less than good pay.

I work night shifts and day shifts alternating and I sleep like a baby after a night shift but then I just cannot fall asleep when a day shift comes by. I don't know how everyone else is doing it around me or they're just as sleep deprived as I am but this feels like hell. I'd much rather it be all night or all day shifts. I'm only a couple months in but I'm seriously thinking about quitting because it's affecting my physical and mental health making me feel agitated all the time.

I've been doing it for 13 years and have coworkers that have worked Dupont schedule for 40 years and they agree there is no getting used to it. You just find little tricks to make it easier for you. I love nights and sleep good during the day but swapping back to work day shift and trying to sleep during the night kicks my ass. It's very hard.

You tried any sleeping aids? I need something as this is getting me down. Wake up at about 2:30am or earlier and cannot go back to sleep after that. Think is i don't feel tired when i wake up at that time.

@@RACING5312001 I do the same thing. Tmro I work days. I will go to sleep tonight around 10 or 11 and be wide awake at 1 or 2 am and just lay in bed. I've tried all OTC sleep meds and none worked. Only thing that work for me is to stay up the entire day after working my last night and have to go on days next.....easier said than done to stay up 30 hrs in a row though. I've even tried prescription sleep meds and the side effects weren't worth it to me. I think I've come to terms with I will be a grouchy tired bastard until I retire lol. I wish i could work straight nights. I hate day shift. I've always been more of a night owl and i think that contributes even more to my inability to sleep during the night.

@@joeyquinney4032 I do 4 on 4 off, 4 on 4 off, 4 on 10 off. But holidays are built into that. You can't take holidays when you want unless someone will swap with you. You get an 18 off in summer but work a longer cycle of the 4 on 4 off. Yes the time off is good but you dread going back after 10 off just as your body is getting used to a normal routine for a bit. In a way i prefer nights. It's just that dreaded time at 3am.

We need to make some reforms here. I think that the only places that should be 24/7 should be jobs that last less than 6 months and hospitals/urgent care centers. And if people have to do night shifts they need to be shorter shifts with adequate break time so the person can get a 20-30 minute nap. I'm not in the medical profession, I'm working on my Bachelor's in pursuit of helping the environment. But people are cool too and we need to take care of ourselves and each other. It's the only way we've even made it this far, in the big scheme of things

One good way to fall asleep for me is to watch CZcams at 1.5 or 2.0 playback speed. Near the middle of the video, I don't hear anything anymore. Taking advantage of that groggy state, sleep. Unfortunately, I have to overcompensate to sleep regularly. Meaning, nothing else get done.
