I drove such a Ferrari 456GT over a duration of about 2 years, because its owner wasn't able to drive it anymore, but at the same time doesn't want to sell it.
It was a dark-blue metallic one & when the owner died, his family wanted me to find the perfect next owner, as I sadly couldn't afford this car, assurance-wise.
So, it went back to Italy, where it's still in the ownership of the buyer, 12y later - and every time, I'm in the area, we do a short trip around his town, bc he knows, I would have bought, if I would have had the money for.
So, thank you Doug for sharing this with the community.😍

In 1997 I got to spend most of my summer vacation driving my uncle’s 456 in France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. It was the most impressive car I’ve ever driven in every respect, and one the German autobahn I got to push it hard and it just settle into a comfortable groove while the engine screamed this incredible mechanical symphony. If I could afford to buy and maintain one I absolutely would. The only problem with experiencing it was having to go back home to the US and our low speed limits and drive my boring Honda Accord.

but....more importantly, is it a Ferrari branded hinge? 🤔
Time flies. I remember when these were new in 1995 which still feels like only a couple years ago mentally. When you think about it being 2024, in three more years, the time distance between this car when new to 2027 will be the same time distance from when the 1962 250 GTO and the 1995 456 GT will be the same length. 🥴😵💫🤯
Okay, gramps, step away from the oatmeal.
Time does fly by so fast in life. The Ferrari 456 is such a sporty but not overdone design. Time marches on and we now have the F12 Berlinetta, 813 Super fast, and soon the interesting "F12 Cilindri" - but Ferrari really needs a successor to the F8...
The 456GT was the first Ferrari ever I owned back in 1997...What a beautiful memory it was...
In the form of a matchbox 1/64 of course.
Not that I didn't believe you but a 456GT as someone's first NEW Ferrari would be crazy
@epicraptorman Yeah, I didn't believe it myself back then! My dad bought one in maroon red from a local dealer (Toy's R Us) and I often abused it on a track (Hotwheels spiral track set) until its unfortunate wreck beyond usage in 2003 and had to be scrapped then 😔

My parents were the official doctors of a couple of Ferrari tours back in the 90s
Every time the group went on track they had a bunch of wrist and ankle injuries. Due to the weight of the clutch and the shifter.
With the adrenaline of “racing” everyone was pushing it very hard and not noticing they were actually hurting themselves. But a few minutes (and a bunch of cigarettes) after stopping many of the owners started limping around, complaining about ankle, knee, wrist and forearm pain.
That’s how heavy the controls were
All the best to everyone
And also early to mid 1970s.
Gotta love the 90s green over tan combo 🔥
Dark green and dark blue are underrated colors on Ferraris. Everyone wants resale red or yellow but the darker colors look sophisticated.
The dark blue was the launch colour but the green works pretty well too.

for real...and yeah, red or yellow are to loud and obnoxious for me, I prefer green, blue, or black all day...maybe orange if I do want attention.
It's hard to imagine an exotic car company works release such a restrained, beautiful design today. A car like this wouldn't grab enough attention for their owners on social media, can't have that..
It might have been more restrained and sublte, when it came out it was a remarkable design. It might have been one the 90's semi-retrotrendsetters, but the big side outlets and C pillar angles were pretty wild for it's day. Not in a shoutabout away, but in origniality and being different of the design.
The 328 GTS also has some of these designs from 456GT.
You can tell it's a mid 1990's creation immediately. Some of the most beautiful cars ever designed were done so in the late 80's to early 90's and became those cars.

What year for the 850CSI? I’m guessing the 1995 with the V12?? Man I miss pop-up lights too!

@@tommystewart3951 I agree, the Beemer was such a nicely styled coupe, having the V12 gave it real cred. (with the manual)
My black '94 JDM MR2 Turbo has pop-up headlights too :)
It's amazing how much kids and teenagers like them...gets a laugh or a "wow cool" everytime ;)
OP: Those cars you named were my dream cars back in the day as well, but for me there's one more car I needed to add...The NSX
I fell in love with the BMW 850CSi slowly, because I really wanted the 1978 - 1981 BMW M1 so much... But there were only around 453 M1 cars produced to Giugiaro's design. The 850Ci from 1994 - 99 looked like the closest successor we ever got, and I still would do nearly anything to get one of the 1218 made with the updated M73 engines. Though the 850CSi was the sportiest version of these E31 series cars, they only made 1510 and so few of the European spec "four wheel steering" that I get sad looking at the "refreshed" body style that lost a little bit of the "magic" to meet safety and cooling needs.
Of the carried forward designs since the 840 / 850 series cars of 1990 - 1999 the BMW i8 had some initial design promise, thrown away in the pursuit of the electric market, IMHO. But I really think BMW should have got their act together and actually tried producing the "Vision M Next" concept car from June 2019 - it could have been a worthwhile (and very expensive) successor to the original M1, *if* BMW could have ever figured out a proper power train in place of the "plug in hybrid" combined engine they had thought of (with abismal range). If BMW ever could produce a worthy design successor to the original M1 (E26) I would be the first to head to my super high selling regional dealership and throw all my money away to them on deposit, and purchase it.
But even back in the 1990's when the 850Ci /CSi were new, Ferrari captured all my spare time and attention. There is something so... straightforward and pleasant about the 456 design, it is not overwhelmingly complex, yet it never looks "simple" either. But times has moved on, and the Ferrari 458 or 599, or the F12 berlinetta, or even going back to the near unobtainable in the U S 512BB are fantastic looking cars.
Expensive money pits. All now needs expensive bushes, air con compressors are 9k, valve guides 15k, rear suspension always leaks yearly, buttons loose and fall out, clutch 8k...on and on....
Doug the kind of guy who calls a 1980s electric mirror, control joystick odd and strange.
I thought Doug was review a new car.
He said that the joystick mirror on that buick was weird, but that is what chevy used for many years after. My van has the same thing and is 2012
Most GM car mirror controls were non electric, multi cable operated, that looped around the driver door window and passenger mirror had five feet of cables. Yes corrosion was a problem. Kind of nightmarish to fix.
That's not how, commas work.
Is there something wrong with the Doug score being 49 and 57 at the same time?
Real beauty like a 550 Maranello as well❤

This car is unusually dirty for a DeMuro video. Was there no time for the owner to get it detailed(professionally) before making the video? Windows are dirty, paint needs to be polished, the interior could use more work too, that close up of the radio was disgusting.
Not dirty, that paintwork is complete f*cked. Scratches all over it.

One of my favorite all time Ferraris 🏎
we love ur reviews doug!
Thanks for the fun review of the old school 'gentlemen's express'! Here's a quick FYI about Ferrari automatics as well as 2+2s in general.
Old school automatic 2+2 Ferraris actually go back quite a long time. The first (that I know of) were 6 late 1960s / early 1970s 365GT 2+2 (Queen Mother) these had a GM Turbo 400 3 speed. Then they skipped the 365GTC/4 and (I think) the 365GT/4 2+2 (the first of the 400-412 body style), which were all manual 5 speed. The majority of the 400, 400i and 412 series were auto (also GM Turbo 400). Then the 456...
Ferrari 2+2s go back to the early 1950s with a 2+2 bodied 212 and became Ferrari's bread and butter with the 250GTE and 330GT but these were all manual transmission (not gated though).
Automatic 456 used Cadillac 4sp box as basis. Ferrari subcontracted Ricardo in UK to design different housing for GM internals to fit at rear of 456 to same location as manual gearbox. 456, 550, 599 and 612 manual and F1 box was done by Grasiano. Grasiano box was also used in many Aston Martin's. Rigardo did competition V8 for Nissan which they didn't end up using. McLaren took that unused design and put it into use in MP4-12C and almost all McLaren's since. Its small world in automotive subcontracting. Everyone is many ways connected to everyone else.
@@erkkavilhunen4916 Thank you for filling out the newer end of the story.
I particularly like your last sentence (although a slightly different topic). As with the top of most industries, the group of key players gets pretty small and they know each other well.

In the Doug Scores table I notice that if you gave *my* '05 Ferrari 612 the same Styling number as Doug gives to this 456 -- an 8, not a 5 -- the additional three points would vault the 612 to first place, ahead of the Ferrari 550, the Murcie, the SLR, and the 360 Strad!
You have a 612? Congrats. That is a lovely undervalued car.
@@kenlykkeslett7501 Soon to be a 612 with gated six, the larger MAFs from the 599 and 6-into-1 headers with valved mufflers (hopefully bumping hp from 533 to 600), some carbon fiber aero stuff, and Topline Products coilovers with pneumatic front and rear lifts. Current bid is 456 dollars. Well done whoever that was.
Is it legal to not like wagons?
Yes, it is. Especially if said wagons are ugly (👀 M3 Touring).
Well yes. Not everyone likes the shape or need the extra practicality. A comparable sedan or fastback will look better with minimal cargo space penalty and it will be slightly more aerodynamic, thus marginally lower fuel consumption and noise at higher speeds.

In our family I had the chance to drive quite often both the 456 and the 612. No match. The 456 needs the transmission oil to (really) warm up and the stick WANTS to be operated with adequate force, than it will perform in its most pleasant and satisfactory way. Same for the steering, needs to be thrown hard in corners and will reward with happiness. Awesome car. I drove both in Monza circuit too (no racing, just laps) and the 612 was too long a wheelbase for variante and sharp cornering plus (minus) the F1 gear of the times was awful, slow and clunky. No way you can rate 612 handling higher. We lost the beloved 456 in the Genova flooding of 2014 and we are still missing her. A car that could last forever ❤
"Displacement and cubic centimeters divided by the number of cylinders" thank you doug this makes sense.
So good to learn about one that I missed. The 90's had some others that seem to bracket this car, the BMW 840 and 850 and the Porsche 928. It would be nice to afford the maintenance on any of those models.
I lusted after the 456 too in the 90's. The design was so well balanced. Definitely ahead of it's time.
Doug - about the trunk button - the valet gives you your keys to the 456, you get in, you open the trunk by pushing the button, then the valet puts your pakages in the trunk. Remember, it was a 90's Lusso.
This is one of the most genuine reactions I’ve seen Doug have to a car in a long time.
There aren't enough "well, actually…" comments here.
1) Doug mentions the options this car has. The 456 didn't have options. Everything was standard. Source: Motor Trend June 1997 - technically a 456 GTA review, but the cars are identical except for transmission.
2) Any 456 with fender shields has had them added as an after-the-fact accessory. The 456 was not offered with these from the factory. Source: it comes up a lot in the ferrarichat.com forums.
3) Quirks not mentioned: the engine is controlled (ECU'd?) as two completely separate 6-cylinder engines. (each bank of the V is basically its own engine to the computer system).
And, not a fact-check, but being that these go for a lot less than a 550/575, you might think "Instead of a pretty nice 991-generation 911, I could swing a V-12 6-speed manual Ferrari!" Just keep in mind that the headaches (many parts aren't made anymore), complexities, and expenses are the same as the 550 despite it being much less expensive than a 550. Source: I own a 1992 456 GT which I both love and hate. This "driver's car" in the video is approaching a rolling garbage fire in terms of how much it'll inevitably cost someone (and it didn't meet reserve, anyway).
0:19 You know what's wrong with this look? NOTHING. It's perfection.
Wow, just like the 550 Maranello, whose review was uploaded only two weeks ago, this still looks great today, even at almost 30 years old!

I’ve always absolutely loved this car and am glad you share my love for it as well. Since I was a kid I thought this was the most beautiful Ferrari ever, especially the Venice.
A friend of mine used to have one (in gunmetal grey paint, but with the same interior as this one) for several years, it was his first Ferrari and he was very happy with it.
I’ve had a Peugeot 406 Coupé and I heard that Ferrari was not happy that Pininfarina’s design of the Peugeot was close to the 456 design. I was very happy about that 😉

While I haven’t seen the Ferrari wagon, I’m seeing a lot of beautiful wagons as I’m visiting Europe. They’re better looking, better handling, and more efficient than the overgrown SUVs in the US. I wish we’d go back to more sedans, coupes, and wagons. Very few Americans really use SUVs as they’re intended, and would be better off with the wagons found here.

Dougs the kind of guy to finally get a haircut
I will always love the 456, had a poster and a scale model (with many more cars) in my room as young teenager for years. I think it's one of the most simpler, understated and elegant Ferraris of all time, much more than the 550 that looks sportier.
456. The number of times Doug says but anyway, but anyway, but anyway in this video... 😂
