'Captain Beaky' entered the UK charts in January 1980 and reached No.5
Some trivia, FWIW: Keith Michell's son Paul was the lead singer for the Roaring Boys, an exciting live band (IMO) who had a brief moment of fame back in ~1985 - their guitarist was Kirsty MacColl's brother, Paul. They did Whistle Test and Paul Gambaccini's 'Other Side of the Tracks', were signed by CBS, then their album bombed and that was that.

I got the Captain Beaky books as a hand me down from my mum, I didn't know there was a song!
The thought lurks that if this was released in December 1979 rather than February 1980 it would have made a great festive number one, and given Pink Floyd a run for their money.
This chart is 3rd February 1980 not 27th January 1980 got the original Top 40 with Tony Blackburn it’s on Mixcloud it 2 hour show they leave 6 records out the records that was on the way out

Hmm, I think that it may be down to the device that piperjomo is listening on. the sound file is indeed good quality and underwent a high res CD mastering process before posting. However this process makes it a crisp, bright file and perhaps not all devices can handle it. I have listened on a variety of devices and through various speakers and it sounds ok. I will try and post a second version for piperjomo !

How i hated this tosh back in early '80.I was desperate for a record i loved to make the chart,or at least get PLAYED, but NO....this is the one the BBC powers that be were obsessed with.
