  • Purchasing boxwood to create a hedge can get expensive. I am going to show you how to root a bunch of boxwood plants to get that hedge you want on a tight budget.
    #gardening #boxwoods #flowerpatchfarmhouse
    Rooting boxwood takes a bit of time and a little effort but the cost savings is well worth it. Come along and see how and when I take cuttings for the best results.
    Some claim Fall is the better time to take cuttings and others say Spring. I am taking mine in Spring as the ones I did in Fall did not root effectively, I had one out of 10 take root. So I am going with Spring for rooting as the better option for me.

    Great video! I disagree with the below review. I saw everything and it was a great pace. Thank you for your help

      I am so glad you found it helpful. I am the lone ranger when videoing so I know sometimes I am not always getting the best shot so critiques don't bother me. Most are appreciative of my attempts and I focus on those and learn from what others feel they need, it can only help me improve.

    I have a honeysuckle boxwood tree. Would this be the same process? I have some rooting powder by Bontone. I’m learning about bonsai and wanted to do that with my boxwood. Thank you for your input!

    I'm pretty sure the patent would only apply if you wanted to resell them or were using them in some other commercial endeavor.

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  Před 3 lety +1

      Actually, a plant patent restricts the reproduction of the plant completely, even only using it yourself, not just for resale or commercial use. Here is an excerpt from the US Patent Office: The grant, which lasts for 20 years from the date of filing the application, protects the patent owner’s right to exclude others from asexually reproducing the plant, and from using, offering for sale, or selling the plant so reproduced.

      Oh, whaddaya know? Even more protection than a mechanical patent. Thanks for the correction; you learn something new every day.

    Great vid. Good to know sometimes the result can vary even in the same conditions. I hope the boxwoods did well! Do you think there’s any merit to concepts of gardening by the moon and it’s effect on success? Was going to try. Figured wouldn’t hurt.

      I have not tried that method but like you I do enjoy experimenting and see how things work out. Let me know how gardening by the moon does for you.

    hi
    I tried to propagate about 20 from healthy parent plant. directly. into. soil
    within few. weeks the leaves in all are dull and sort of graying
    will the. plants die or survive? what are your thoughts

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  Před 4 lety

      Sounds like they are dying. If they dry out at all or are in hot sun they will not be able to retain enough moisture to keep going. I am trying some directly in the soil but so far they haven't done much but they are staying green.

    how long does it take for the plant to grow?

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  Před 4 lety +1

      Different varieties grow at different rates and your conditions will affect them. It can take 3 years to get to about 2 feet. I have Green Mountain, Korean Boxwood and Winter Gem. They all grow at a different rate.

    Can you plz plz plz tell me what soil (and anythng else in that pot) u used and the link if possible?

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  Před 3 lety

      I create my own potting soil, link is here: www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/easy-diy-potting-soil/ but you can use any good, organic potting mix for this. Some people even use just sand.

      I have never tried it, so I am not sure, but that would be a hardwood cutting and if you try it give it plenty of time to root. Hardwood cuttings take a lot longer than others. Let me know how it works for you!

    Use rooting hormone to increase the chance of rooting.

    How do you know if it patented?/

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  Před 2 lety

      Most will have a name on the label of which type it is. I have Winter Gem, Wintergreen, Sprinter. Most online places that sell plants will have the plant patent number listed. Just google that patent number and it will come up with all the details. If you don't know what yours is, then I wouldn't worry about it.

    THE NEW GROWTH ON MY BOXWOOD IS YELLOW, CAN I STILL CUP FROM IT? HOW DO I FIX IT?

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  Před 5 lety

      There are many variables as to why your boxwood is yellowing. It could be winter damage, nematodes or a /disease/fungus. It is better to bring your plant to a healthy condition before trying to propagate it. Without seeing your plant and the conditions I can't really tell you how to fix it. but do a internet search and see if you can find something that fits what is going on and what conditions can cause that issue. Sorry I can't be of more help.
