- Turns out common sense is like a muscle and you need to exercise it once in a while. Luckily Mark Davidson, author of "The Art of Common Sense" has a seven day challenge for us to strengthen our common sense skills.
Mark's background is in philosophy and coaching. He has drawn on his philosophical work (the Philosophical Clarity Project and a novel, The Philosophy Game) and his coaching experience (INSEAD, Harvard, and many multinational companies) to develop a powerful new paradigm for coaching and organisational development. He now runs Merlin Scotland, a start-up that teaches coaching. In this talk he will be discussing how to implement common sense in every day life.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
Thank you, im actually a psychotic and I was divorced from common sense from years. This talk helped me to organiza my chores and my life.
1. What is common sense?
Looking to a specific moment, reality to figure out how things will work and just do what are needed to do, without any text book or guidance.
It could be considered to be more effective than bueraucratic, as it will never capture the full reality
2. How can we practice it?
Everyday in 7 days, have at least one eccentric conversation about any topic
Before the talK: Talk to your partner about the center of the conversation to get about how things are
During: Keep the talk concrete, dont need it to be perfect, try to find a common ground in the topic.
Be a good listener to encourage person you are talking to think out loud
Be critical
=> develop a new aware of the conversation,
Then take note on the topic
=> learn from your common sense
What is common sense in farming has maintained in some respects, yet some it has respects it has maintained, and in respects it can’t be realized because of economic conditions. Eg I have to till my soil every year and spray weeds but the soil quality never improves because I’m destroying it before it can rebuild.
Years ago it was common sense to till up the rocks and pick them. Now it’s common sense to not till at all and leave them below the surface.
I do this every day but i struggle stay in the present . My issue is common sense such as what i already know . I forgot that i put foil in the microwave for a second . for a instance my brain is going faster than my mouth can process Which is not a common sense thing i dont think. Being distant from the present is what i struggle with , what is widely accepted as common sense , is where i struggle . I can talk about philosophy all day but trying to have small talk becomes a struggle after minutes when form people can interact normally . Its both anxiety and common sense issue . I struggle with spelling yet give me 10 minutes and i could say 3 lines of Shakespeare. What is common for other people takes effort for me , but writing a 500 words essay would be easy, where some find this tedious . I suppose the cause is my lack of interaction with people? Is there a such thing as having to many conversations with yourself 🤔
I'm the same way. I'm always told by my family, whom I've noticed always judges me critically, that I'm very book smart, but I lack any street smarts/common sense. Maybe our brains function a certain way that's different from others. I'm fine with athleticism and books and do well in school, but in other situations where others just "know what to do", I struggle. 🤷🏾♀️
@@lpsprincess67 same here. Used to routinely be told from my mother that I lacked common sense
@@lpsprincess67 Same here
Same and it affects me a lot. I have the book smarts down but common sense seems to fall behind. It makes me shy away from situations where it might be tested, in order to avoid potential embarrassment. I wish there was a quick fix for it.
@@ItsKyleW you lack logic not common sense
Best ted talk i ever watched
Expectation vs reality be average dont expect fancy perfect results be human and accept being imperfect think with less critical judgment

Same here as well
I thought common sense was having the wisdom of knowing right from wrong and in any situation you try to do what is right. It probably starts when people first put their hand in fire I wonder what the right answer is it just might be common sense.
God bless you mark
I was only listening with my right earphone and wondering why there are likes for a mute video.

Common sense tells you the earth is flat
Then it'd be possible to see the other side of the world from your location point of view on the horizon.
