Yes, shoes for travel should be comfortable and supportive (or at least have good inserts).

  • @imscanon
    @imscanon Před 3 měsíci +16

I recommend getting your insole before getting the shoe so you can try the shoe on with the insole. So often, once you put the insole in, the shoe either no longer fits or isn't comfortable anymore. You need to try them together in case you need to go up a size once the insole is in.

Regarding stinky shoes due to being barefoot; I slip a no-show sock over my insoles and wash them just as I would my regular socks. Absolutely cuts down on the stink and is more comfortable.

Thank you. Just to let you know, velcro isn't great if you have a high instep. Most shoe manufacturers who make velcro straps, don't make them long enough for those of us who have a high instep.😊 A strap with a buckle works better, because it doesn't come apart when you're walking.

Re: shoelaces, I replace any cloth shoelaces with silicone no tie “laces.” They are waterproof, but the real reasons I change them out is to make my shoes slip on (which has been great at airports) and the look is cleaner without a bow or any ends sticking out.
Also the shoe inserts (by Powerstep) are fabulous. My podiatrist recommended those to me years ago so I wear them every day. They last for several years with daily use!
Thanks for sharing so many great suggestions.

If the insoles of your shoes come out, take it out and put a no show sock on the insole upside down ( hole on the bottom).. put it back in shoe. Saves you insoles and make feet comfy with no extra bulk. Remove, wash, reuse.

I bought my Vessi's (gray, pull on) when my cruise landed me in N.Y. the last week of November 2019. Being unsure what the weather would be I wanted something that would be warm, comfortable and water proof and these fit the bill perfectly. Great for excursions too. They were the only sneaker type shoe I packed and am still wearing them today - as long as the snow stops and the drifts don't get any higher 😅.

Terrific suggestions. I've found, as an older traveler in my 70s, that being able to change my shoes makes a HUGE difference when it comes to maintaining good foot health while I'm traveling & doing a lot of walking. For this reason, I will swap out a change of clothes and/or an outer layer for an extra pair of shoes. One pair of good compression socks is a must, to wear in flight & then in my hotel rooms when I'm resting. Also being able to change my socks that I wear with my shoes frequently. Aquaphor ointment in a small travel-size tube is great for rubbing on foot hot spots before putting your shoes on, because it's double-duty - prevents friction & acts as an infection-preventive. Also, inserts are a must. I always bring a pair of flip flops, which take up very little room & provide opportunities to rest my feet without being full-on barefoot. Two flip-flop features that I require are: (1) The toe part doesn't go all the way through the sole because that circular part on the sole that holds the toe thing can break down, & (2) The soles are not super-thin, that they provide SOME cushion. One brand that meets these requirements is Sanuk, but there are others. Then I will bring two pair of sneaker-style shoes, wear one pair as my travel outfit & pack the other pair, because for me, being able to change shoes makes such a difference. I used to never wear Birkenstock sandals when traveling even though they're my favorite at-home footwear, because let's face it, they're not exactly "fashion-forward," but I've gotten over that with age. Now I bring them. If I do bring checked luggage, it will be a second carry-on size piece & then I will pack a pair of dressy sandals or some short boots depending on season. I know this sounds like a lot of shoes, but again, by changing my footwear frequently, I am able to do more walking & stair-climbing. I'd rather swap out clothes & do more laundry. Thanks for focusing on this important topic.

Shoes, oh they can be problematic! On a European trip I ended up throwing out all but 1 pair of shoes because they hurt terribly. Then I bought a pair of Ecco sneaker-type shoes, and that taught me a lesson. No matter how good a shoe feels in the store, that’s no guarantee on real life comfort - those Ecco’s were quickly donated to charity. Always wear the shoes around on different surfaces and take time, if necessary, to break them in. My favorite travel shoes now are Taos Dandy, slip on, neutral color, lovely arch support. Laurie, thanks for all your tips!

I’m always on the hunt for a no show sock that isn’t bulky & doesn’t slip off my foot. I used to wear Bombas but my daughter introduced me to Ondo. They’re thin so they don’t make your shoe feel tighter & they stay on! They even make a style for wearing with ballet flats.

Peds has a wonderful type that is great under running style shoes or trainers. They are a high cut, but no show - sold at Target (only two pair, I think) Amazon (six pair) and the Peds website. They were really comfortable in the store, but after a couple of hours (mostly driving, some getting out and walking around stores), I had a lot of pain in my feet. I guess I have weird shaped feet! Same with those Soft 7 suede bootie style sneakers. Hard to fit feet is a real curse! The only shoes I have that don't hurt after wearing them a long time are 20 year old Clarks sandals - although newer Clarks sandals also hurt. I do find the Ecco inserts comfortable though, so I use them in all my cheaper shoes.

I'm older (68) with a tendency to plantar faciitis so supportive walking shoes are a must for me (all the time as well as trips.). As well my feet are wide and I have a high instep. I wear either black New Balance 813s or Rockport ProWalkers (both come in wide sizes.) .Velcro closures or slip ons don't work for me (straps not long enough with velcro and slip on/loafers rub on the top of my instep). I wear them with Superfeet green inserts to support my high arches. Cheaper shoes often aren't deep enough to put orthodic inserts inside; both of the shoes I list are fine with orthodic inserts. (Both of my shoes have been waterproofed with spray). My tip is if you tend to plantar facitiis, pack a small lightweight foot roller (I have a small one from a Japanese dollar store) and a pair of extra orthodic inserts from another brand to change out when necessary.

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie hands down the best shoe I have ever worn. The sole and arch can take some getting used to so I always recommend getting the slides or the flip flops to get a feel for the footbed. I have rheumatoid arthritis and jog a 5k in them every day. I’ve also walked 25-30k steps a day at Disney World in them. I will say if you have chubby feet and/or ankles or your feet/ankles swell a lot by the end of the day, the shoes may not be good for those people.

RE: Footbed insets: I only use arch support inserts instead of full foot inserts as they often make the shoes feel too cramped (especially in the toe area). It also eliminates the problem of the heel slipping off the shoe. Dr. Scholls has clear ones that can even be inconspicuously added to even sandals. These are a game changer.

One tip to keep shoes fresh: put hand sanitizer on your feet before putting on shoes and socks!!! (As always warm up your joints a bit before the stretch that happens as you put
    hand sanitizer on your soles)
Oh man, the quest for the perfect walking/travel shoe.
I have a wide toe box, narrow heel, high instep, high arch and super flexible feet. If a shoe is not flexible enough, I walk right out of it OR it rubs my heels producing blisters OR makes my sock bunch up.
Plus, after years of dance and teaching high impact fitness, the fat pads on my soles have migrated a bit, so inserts are a must (which then makes my feet even taller and shoes fit tighter. 😢)
