    Philadelphia's most dangerous street.
Problems with Drugs and Crime in Kensington Ave, Philadelphia
In Philadelphia as a whole, violent crime and drug abuse are major issues. The city has a higher rate of violent crime than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas. The drug overdose rate in Philadelphia is also concerning. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50%, with more than twice as many deaths from overdoses as homicides. 2 Kensington's high crime rate and drug abuse contribute significantly to Philadelphia's problems.
Because of the high number of drugs in the neighborhood, Kensington has the third-highest drug crime rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia, at 3.57. The opioid epidemic has played a significant role in this problem, as it has in much of the rest of the country. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed in the United States over the last two decades, and Philadelphia is no exception. In addition to having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% of Philadelphia's overdose deaths involved opioids, and Kensington is a significant contributor to this figure. This Philadelphia neighborhood is said to have the largest open-air heroin market on the East Coast, with many neighbors migrating to the area for heroin and other opioids. With such a high concentration of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have focused on the neighborhood in an attempt to address Philadelphia's problem.

As a 15-year-old in Amsterdam (mid 90'ties), I remember seeing junkies lying against each other, sleeping, like sardines in a can to keep each other warm, behind the central station in the cold and rain. I asked my elder brother, who was then 21 years old at the time (we were playing in a band together, and we were on our way to the music rehearsal place), why do people live like this? Because it made a huge impression on me.
Then my brother answered non-judgemental: heroin. And then he explained to me about hard drugs and told me that even the strongest of men can not fight, or hold off, the addictiveness of these substances. He said the biggest mistake you can make is thinking it will not happen to you. So if you want to end up like this, he said cynically, you know what to do...
So I never did hard drugs. This stuff was a red line for me, and believe me, I did enough partying... But it always intrigued me that being aware of the consequences, someone would put the first needle in his arm. Years later, I had a conversation with an ex-heroin addict, and I asked him about the first needle. He had a surprising answer: the moment you put the first needle into your arm is a conscious choice for this type of life. He said that most of the addicts regret it afterwards, but the choice of starting heroin is mostly made with the full knowledge of the risks.
My conclusion is that most addicts had too much pride that first moment, thinking they could resist the demon of addiction. Then I had to think back to the valuable advice my brother gave to me years before: that even the strongest of men can not fight, or hold off, the addictiveness of these substances. In other words, he told me to have an attitude of humility and watch out for pride.
I pray for these poor souls, and I hope they find peace at some point in their life. Don't forget: these are someone's loved ones, children, mothers and fathers.

Very true. I saw a statistic once that showed relapse in nicotine greater than cocaine. I feel also for the addict, just believing that the substance is stronger than your will keeps you it’s thrall. I personally have dabbled in crystal. Now I’m free, and I believe not for nothing. I always believed I can overcome it. One has to be stronger than the problem. Drugs are beasts that cannot be tamed, and should be starved. I recommend reading Gabor Maté, and seeing how addiction is far broader than the drugs, and developmental trauma is a key culprit. Drugs are strong, but emotional factors play a decisive role.

It's all about who you surround yourself with. I have been fortunate to be born into a wealthy family and have never had to struggle for money, but let me tell you from the bottom of my heart that I could have gone down a terrible path if i had chosen to remain with certain "friends" in my life. Their choices, habits, interests could have destroyed every bit of goodness, aspirations and moral character inside me. I was again fortunate enough to read some books, listen to podcasts and also consulted a psychologist to identify where I was going wrong, even though I am agnostic, my parents being religious helped me find an alternative lifestyle, one which is clean, highly spiritual, filled with productive habits and gratitude. This has helped me become a better person both personally and professionally and I have changed my life around. Now I choose who to spend and surround myself with, and it has made all the difference.

Lost a beautiful family member to addiction, mental health was so bad, my daughter and I managed to get him clean for a year, I was the happiest Auntie in the world as he was a kind and loving nephew. He left my home to go look for work , I hugged him so tight and told him to stay in touch, we talked everyday on the phone but I knew he was back on drugs and drink. He died on his own. I can’t grieve him at all. I keep believing he’s still with me. So many of these addicts have mental health problems . We did everything we could, taking him to doctors and mental health workers. I visit his grave , take flowers 🌺 and angel ornaments , but I walk away thinking he’s still somewhere near. I know I’m only protecting my heart, but that’s how I cope. I don’t mind if people find that funny, but I battle everyday when I play the videos he sent me and listening to his voice and how he says my name. No one knows when this might happen to one of there own. God help them all. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

They use to numb emotional pain. The drug is not what cause the addiction. The mental pain does. This is why this is getting worse because we are not dealing with the cause of addiction and live in some fantasy land we can get rid of all the drugs and no one ever use drugs. Well looked how that turn out for those who abuse opiate pills. They got cut off and went to stronger worse drugs and seniors and disabled people are dying from chronic pain. Chronic pain does cause and can shorten someone life by 40% due to the stress it places on the body. Now days you are chronic pain patient and they treat you like you just got out of jail. Some of these doctors want drug test every month that cost thousands of dollars. Some places have you sign a contract that say you must show up at the office within 2 hour from when they call you to get your pills counted. If you are off a few pills they cut you off with no taper butting Some people who have multiple condition elderly in very dangerous withdrawals. Then you have family member who want to help by self medicating and think they are buying prescription drugs from the street and they are really fentanyl. It is not helping patient or addicts, but a lot of money are making tons of money off this by blaming everyone but who decided to use 10 pills instead of what the prescription said. Why is that a doctor fault or a drug company. Ps Oxcontin stated they were less addictive because it was a long acting medication. I doubt they though prescribe patient would take off the coating off, smash the pill, cook it in water and inject it. While people do this to cover emotion and mental pain, they choose to go this route instead of asking for help because denial of the problem is also part of this especially in the beginning. Everyone get high once in while excuse. Well not everyone does.

I'd say "Christ Jesus entering either of their hearts and replacing the heart of stone with a heart of flesh" the other would be an intervention which might wipe the animal clean so that next time more demons can inhabit them.

As an almost 75 yrs old man, who seen a lot of the world, good and bad, but seen this behavior in just one place. In the 19 sixties I was assigned to a hospital in the Hungarian capital. Not to the mentally disturbed, but as a young therapist, hungry to learn and see it all, I asked to have access to the locked down ward.Long story short, pictures coming back as I watch those persons aimlessly walking up and down, totally forgot that they are humans. And don’t get me wrong, but those mentally disturbed persons had more common sense in that ward than this healthy and young persons living in one of the leading country of the world. And it is not their fault. Society is coming in mind as a partner in crime. The solution would be, lock them down with the necessary medical help, but first lock down all the dealers, whom are as much guilty as the city or state officials as the users of the drugs. Solution? Can’t see any in the future, but one. Radical or not, gather them in one place, kill all the providers of the drugs, and sorry to say, the same care for the users to. They are not just simple lost souls but hopeless as humans.

I'm going to share my story it will make some people angry but I don't care. I work at Glenwood and Kensington avenues in Philadelphia. I have seen it all. I remember a girl named Brandi who was a street walker. She told me she did tricks to feed her daughter but she said tricking messes up your mind so you turn to drugs to shut out the pain and hurt you feel. Then instead of tricking to feed her daughter she tricked to feed her drug habit. About 18 months ago I stopped seeing Brandi around come to find out she od by chasing the dragon. Her daughter was 8 years old at the time of her death. Brandi is just one of the many women that are out there in the Kensington Ave area of Philadelphia. There is no fix coming the police are powerless to stop the drug dealers are making a fortune and the district attorney has basically stopped trying to enforce any type of law. And the sad part is none of these people want help. There was a woman named Liz that I tried to get help and she told me that rehab doesn't pay the bills in which I replied if all your money is going to the drug dealers then how are you paying any bills. I got no answer. Haven't seen her in over a year. There was another woman we called smiley she died of an overdose in an alley. I tell people all the time the only thing that changes in Kensington is the faces.

That doesn't include the deaths from all other causes, including hypothermia, that's a horrible waste of life. Most all of the overdose deaths are because of drug dealer's poor chemistry skills, there's a huge difference between a microgram and a milligram.

The only one who can change that is the addict themselves. My opinion ?
Have designated areas set up for them and let them use, provide good hygeine like new needles, medical treatment, and a clean environment for them, because the more you try and control them and stop it, the worse the problem will become. Being a onetime addict myself I know that it took what it took, for me to make the change. This is ofcoarse only my humble opinion.

The thing is, everyone I've ever known who became an addict came from well-off, suburban families with dual income parents, good homes, etc. So I have no patience for these people anymore.
