    Philadelphia's most dangerous street.
Problems with Drugs and Crime in Kensington Ave, Philadelphia
In Philadelphia as a whole, violent crime and drug abuse are major issues. The city has a higher rate of violent crime than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas. The drug overdose rate in Philadelphia is also concerning. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50%, with more than twice as many deaths from overdoses as homicides. 2 Kensington's high crime rate and drug abuse contribute significantly to Philadelphia's problems.
Because of the high number of drugs in the neighborhood, Kensington has the third-highest drug crime rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia, at 3.57. The opioid epidemic has played a significant role in this problem, as it has in much of the rest of the country. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed in the United States over the last two decades, and Philadelphia is no exception. In addition to having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% of Philadelphia's overdose deaths involved opioids, and Kensington is a significant contributor to this figure. This Philadelphia neighborhood is said to have the largest open-air heroin market on the East Coast, with many neighbors migrating to the area for heroin and other opioids. With such a high concentration of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have focused on the neighborhood in an attempt to address Philadelphia's problem.

All the hoops I have to jump though every month and now there are shortages of oxycodone because the DEA has forced drug companies to cut back. I have no doubt due to my pain if I was unable to get them any longer I would be out there with there people buying my pain meds off the street. I would have no choice. I would do anything to keep out of pain. I have a metal cage that hold my spine together that runs from my tailbone to mid-back. I have extreme neuropathy or damaged nerves in my legs that will never heal due to the damage. I'm lucky to even walk.

This is one of the most sad and depressing things I have ever seen. We (as a society) are not helping by allowing this. Arrest for possession/sales, give them the option of jail or treatment (in court). Eventually most will get clean and stop this horrific epidemic. Letting them live in squalor abusing drugs is not humane.

I've been through Kensington and this video does not really represent the full extent of the problem. The driver seems to be circling the same few blocks over and over, but the reality is it stretches for blocks and blocks and blocks off the main drag shown here. You start getting back into Indiana St., Kip, Stella St - it just goes on and on. There are who blocks of burned out buildings and empty lots - you could never hope to arrest everyone, let alone offer treatment to the number of people affected. It is seriously daunting. Poverty, homelessness, drug addiction, hunger, domestic abuse, human trafficing...thinking that "giving them the option of jail or treatment" will lead "most" to "get clean and stop this horrific epidemic" is so far beyond wishful thinking that you have NO IDEA. It's not even a strictly money issue, though it would take billions.

The drug and homelessness problem was already bad in this neighborhood before the recent introduction of 'tranq' (animal tranquilizer mixed with heroin or fentanyl). This causes the zombie state you see and it literally rots their skin.
If you had continued (at your own risk) a few blocks down to Kensington and Somerset you would have seen many more people there. There was the segment Dr. Oz did a few years ago about the horrific heroin encampments along the train tracks in Philly, that was right in this area.
When the city and Conrail finally acted to clear it out I don't know what the plan was for all the displaced people but the result was that they moved onto the streets in the surrounding neighborhoods. And then some of those clusters get cleared away but all it does is to move them again. It's shocking to see. Many of the people are so powerfully addicted and resist any efforts for treatment. And it is compounded by the instances of mental illness suffered by many of them.

Hardly anyone was there that had an actual mental illness not related to substance abuse. The issue is it was rare when they could actually find a treatment center willing to take someone. Even the rare few that actually wanted help, it was rare to find money for them to get help. But yet, the government can put illegals up in fancy hotels and send billions to Ukraine.. POLITICIANS ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOBS AND WE SAY NOTHING.. however I will add there is an element of society that you will be unable to help, and you can’t waste money on those people. This is a state local jurisdiction issue. The state has to put up the money. The federal government can provide more money for hunting down large scale dealers, push China to crack down on production, but not provide money for local treatment centers. Ukraine has nothing to do with this. Illegals are not being put up in "fancy hotels". Get your head out of Trump's ass--nothing he says is right. You are deliberately conflating two entirely separate issues. If you want city and state politicians who will prioritize these problems and do their jobs, then go help elect them. The rare few who do want treatment, what about the rest? You can't force them to get treatment.

Homelessness isn't the cause of drug addiction. Drug addicted people spend all their money on drugs, not rent or mortgage payments. Unless you face that fact, you are part of the problem. Saying that "homelessness" is the problem is simply an attempt to put the blame on society or the government.
