Hamdi has a great American success story. I grew up about 30 minutes away from the original factory in upstate New York, an area that has been hammered again and again over the last generation by bad economic news: deindustrialization; a high-tax/high regulation business environment; corporations packing up and moving out. Ulukaya didn't just start up a yogurt plant, he created hundreds of jobs for people in the area and through his vision made it possible for them to put food on their tables. The interview would have been much better if the anchor had just shut her trap a few times and allowed him to finish speaking; rude in the extreme, not a great quality in an interviewer.

This lady sucks at her job. She does not know how to interview someone. Hamdi is a very soft spoken man and she was being overly aggressive for no reason. Also, I love when an immigrant or person of color succeeds financially in this county despite multiple obstacles, white people say things like "so...like...because you are a billionaire now, and there are so many poor people right now..." Unbelievable. Also, she was trying to set him up to say something politically incriminating but Hamdi handled himself very professionally.

Greek yogurt or not, Chobani is the best tasting yogurt around! IMO. The 'other' yogurts are loaded with sugar. Also, this CEO is one of the most generous CEO's ever. He is giving his employees a 10% stake in the company before the IPO. Nice! (I have seen many large U.S. corporations as they were growing and making 'big money' - ignore offering any kind of stock options for hourly employees yet treating the shareholders better than the people that got them to where they were).

+Chris Siochos The word yogurt is a shortened form of "Yogurmak" which is the Turkish verb meaning "to churn".
It's known as Greek yogurt because the thickened form of yogurt was traditionally more common in Greece, Turkey and the Middle East. Here in the US the name "Greek yogurt" was historically the terminology gourmets and other "foodies" used to refer to thick yogurt. The thinner more watery form of yogurt is known as Swiss-style yogurt (like Yoplait brand).

Because American people only care about image when it comes to food. They don't care what is actually what. This is a country where you can sell 4 pieces of asparagus put in water for 7 dollars at Whole Foods. Why? Because shopping at Whole Foods creates an image of wealth. I presume they realized the name Greek would create a better image than Turkish yogurt.

Turkish yogurt, both as a word and as a product long precedes Ottoman Turks. It was well known on high steppes of Asia (now Mongolia), where Turks used to live since ancient times (several thousand years ago). They lived inside yurts and had nothing but herds. Preservation of food during long journeys for their herds on steppes was an important issue. It is a difficult lifestyle (please refer to the BBC documentary Human Planet, Mountains - Life in Thin Air). Yogurt helps in keeping their milk stay longer. Also, Turks do not possess an active version of lactase enzyme producing gene in adults and cannot readily digest milk. Making fermented products like yogurt and cheese reduces lactose content of milk, which is of course vital for their survival.
Greeks might have independently developped their yogurt in the distant past, but "yogurt" as a historic and modern term in all senses is a Turkish concept.

    •  Před 7 lety +3

If you are a Turkish citizen and can perfectly digest milk after 30 years old, your genetic origin might be less related with Asian Turks and more related with Arabs or Persians.

Increasing Fed intervention in interest rates and since 2008, money printing on a scale never seen before, is playing into the hands of high end financiers who can then pay for further financial regulations to be lobbied out of existence.
These financiers don't make anything that we eat, wear, ride in or use. They only make money from arcane financial speculation. And it's no coincidence that the global economy is as distorted, unequal and as geared towards financiers as it was just before the 1929 crash and subsequent depression.
I applaud Chobani, but the problems of income inequality lie with bankers, financiers their puppets at the Fed and successive governments who are benefitting from huge financial manipulation.

To all the Turks in here bashing the CEO.
Has it ever occurred to you how you grow a business? Marketing.
Yes yogurt is a turkish word and chobani is a turkish surname. But what does this have to do with anything?
When you get to marketeer a product you have to think about how consumers perceive names/brands/design.
Americans would be much more inclined to buy greek-branded yogurt rather than turkish-branded yogurt since they feel closer and more connected to greek culture. For the american perception, greeks are europeans just like their ancestors, turks meh.
It's all part of the marketing scheme, and Hamdi knows this very well.

He called it "Greek Yoghurt", because there was already an existing market in the US which sold the type of yoghurt he wanted to sell as "Greek Yoghurt". But it was a niche market. So, he adapted to the existing market, instead of trying to change the name.
If this bothers you, maybe take a look at Turkey's president who fights with every nation out there. Turkey doesn't have a positive image anymore around the world, like they used to, because the Turkish president can't get along with anyone.
Most Turks don't speak English, and besides that don't invest outside Turkey. So, the only people to blame are Turks themselves. Turkish coffee is also called Greek coffee in the US.
