Exactly. There’s a reason that we love Union and those roars and behemoths like Beast, Os du Randt, Spicy Plum, Ox, John Smit et al. The scrum is integral and since Willemse’s call in that quarter-final, France have had sour grapes and then of course we knocked over England successively, ol’ Bill has been muttering down the corridors of Pembroke Street. Rugby is violent chess and we reward strategy and tact but also power and dominance, so teams quake in their boots against SA, Argentina and Georgia because they all have dominate scrums and can use that as an attacking platform. Let’s see it play out and the loopholes used around the scrum and deliberate fouls and watch the teams’ strategies adapt. I wonder what Doc Rassie has up his sleeve...
The scrum, as we have known it in recent times has been administered to become something it should never have been. Scrums are awarded as a result of a minor offence, however as a result of the unique unspoken games that props play between themselves, what has developed has been obscure awards for penalties, which can effect the results of the games. This does seem to be an unbalanced consequence to a slight forward pass. Thinking back to scrums at school boy level, they just got together, stooped down, ball down the middle, hook and shove. Back rows break away as quick as possible to nail the 10. It didn’t take too long, and a couple of resets were all that was ever needed. Looking at Genge, as to how his game is developing in recent times, that is interesting and better for the game as a whole. Union over League every time, however Union has been shooting itself in the foot with recent attempts to ‘improve’ the game. Perhaps if props spent their time pre match having arm wrestling matches in the bar, then that would get that part out of their system, and then we could all watch a good game of rugby afterwards?
They must start thinking about a new name for this game without scrums. The scrum is pivotal to the game of rugby. A lot can be done to address the time wastages around scrums.

if the law is going to be enacted a scrum option should be available from a free kick by the attacking side inside the 22. Many years ago off a free kick you would tap the ball , one pass, drop goal. We may see more of that. Next drop goals and penalties will drop back to 2 points.
Am all for this, in fact I'd ditch scrums all together. Let's face it, the modern prop, (the most penalised player on the paddock), can barely seeout 50mins of the 80 before being hooked and replaced by another neckless wonder. If it meant the demise of the chest-beaters then so beit. No more Munster killing the clock by making a scrum last 15mins. No more dodgy pens, and no more man-bun'd ¾'s running in to pat backs from 25yards away. The ball would be in play longer. The play would be faster. The game would be more entertaining and ultimately SAFER. Bring it on.
You have a scrum and behind the scrum is the backline. Get rid of the scrum and where do the forwards go? Well, they end up in the backline and that's and when you get rid of backline play
Surely there is a way around the scrum problem though? Just knock the ball on or pass it forward when your attack is not going anywhere. I'm surprised the Boks haven't resorted to that yet. Actually, we don't know that they haven't.
I watch both League and Union - exactly for the differences which define them ! The scrum is part of the DNA in union and yes, exactly who are these people wanting these changes ? lets have the list please, and their email addresses !
I am not in agreement with the rule but for a different reason. The games is for all shapes and sizes but since at the top level there are now eight available replacements forwards have become huge as most of the pack only has to play part of the game. Do away with the non-injury replacements and the forwards will have to trim down.
Scrums belong in rugby, but when last was there a game where the ball was thrown in straight? This us no longer policed. It used to be competitive but now there is never a turnover unless someone really stuffs thing up .
we the true rugby lovers don't even know who was involved in rule changes their names did they vote and was all but all rugby nations involved....sick.
There will still be scrums to restart the game after a knock on but there should not be any penaltys from a scrum just a tap and go if the scrum collaspes no resets
If there is no penalties just a tap and go then the falling back rule must also be amended because all the scrum players will either infront of the kicker or not backed enough so wich side is then infringing the rule and then gets a penalty kick
Changing the offside line to the middle of the tunnel is baffling. Why? Surely it will suffocate backline play. As far as the laws on protecting the scrumhalf, why would you want to give him even more time to check for seagulls and draw a map of the surroundings? Make him get rid of the ball like a hot potato.
what about the big kids growing up once scrums gone, they won't have a place in the team. it's a very inclusive team sport with many roles to be filled - forget internationals..... it's about the kids and belonging and showing they can be great as well.
I can not understand that a handfull of people can sit in a boardroom and make decisipns like this on behalf of a game that millions love.without getting concensus from the supporters.
As a prop who played in the 1990s, I find the modern scrum a joke. It has become a means of conning the ref into awarding a penalty. It is impossible to win a ball against the head. I see penalties awarded when obviously the penalty should have gone the other way. The scrum has been part of the game since its inception. The modern scrum is a debasement of the traditional set piece.
The game was much more popular and stadiums much fuller in the 80’s when the game was much slower! WR is completely out of touch with what we as spectators want.
They have made the wrong rule change if they really wanted to stop scrums taking over the game then they should have limited the number of forwards available as replacements.
Who cares what he thinks better to ask the big rugby fans who follow and support if they would continue watching never needed the others over the last 80 + years. In that time we’ve some great games with the same rules over the years and rugby has always been a great game without all the know all’s having a say. I only agree with the high tackle improvement where a neck can be broken. Let world rugby make their own league and see how they get on.
World Rugby take a tip from Nigel Owens and listen to him. I bet they didn't even consult him with the new rules. They just suck their thumbs and say change this or that. Why change the rules??
Completely agrees with Nigel! The falling of the scrum will lead to the falling of the game! And my interest in this amazing game. WR please stop altering this game to feed your own ambitions regarding who should win and how!! Let rugby as is be the winner and not your petty ambitions! Boklover
This is how sport disciplines split. If WR keep on this tack, we'll have a new rugby organization that embraces the traditional game.

And it is not as if the top scrumn teams are necessary the heaviest players! It is an art and a specialist occupation!!
Good job saying it as it is 👍🏼
Surely there is a way around the scrum problem though? Just knock the ball on or pass it forward when your attack is not going anywhere. I'm surprised the Boks haven't resorted to that yet. Actually, we don't know that they haven't.
I'm sure you've seen the similarities on attack by S.A franchises, I feel sorry for the IRB cause those guys are hungry to wear the green &gold.
Can the scrum rule change be overturned or it is final indefinitely?
It’s not an attack on the springboks it’s an attempt to get rid of endless minutes of inactivity which most casual viewers don’t understand or want.
Stop the clock then.
@@johnburton2534 how does that fix endless minutes of inactivity ?
The scrum has to be done properly though. It's dangerous in there otherwise...
Thats really clever, so they want to take their chances against the Springbok backline
Absolutely agree with Nigel Owens. World rugby will in changing the scrum destroy the game.
Rugby bullies seem to have a problem with South Africa's consistent victories, so why not completely ban the entire game?
I support Nigel Owen's 100%. !!
We have a history of brilliant kickers so let’s see how they soon want to take kicking out of the game as well
Let’s do a petition against these law’s people
Scrums belong in rugby, but when last was there a game where the ball was thrown in straight? This us no longer policed. It used to be competitive but now there is never a turnover unless someone really stuffs thing up .
we the true rugby lovers don't even know who was involved in rule changes their names did they vote and was all but all rugby nations involved....sick.
So let's start a new union, global rugby
It's will carlings 57 old farts.
If the scrums go I won’t watch the game I love
Also the referees take to long to get the scrums set
Ah, the dulcet tones of bleating.
Next change we need is no scrum penalties
How can you have scrum penalties if you don't have scrums.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it...simple as that!!
This is nuts why are we trying to change the game. Scrums are part of the game , 😊
what about the big kids growing up once scrums gone, they won't have a place in the team. it's a very inclusive team sport with many roles to be filled - forget internationals..... it's about the kids and belonging and showing they can be great as well.
They are turning rugby into league
Yes but it's not about older people but reaching a younger audience
Young people are used to instant and quick; T20 is an example
Imagine changing the rules just to beat the better teams lmao! Northern hemisphere is forever sad.
They have made the wrong rule change if they really wanted to stop scrums taking over the game then they should have limited the number of forwards available as replacements.
WR are desperate for a NH side to win RWC. These rule changes are going to backfire spectacularly.
Rugby Unions, should break away from the present upcoming new laws.!!
If thr ref's managed the srum correctly....feeding..and players meandering up to the scrum. There wouldn't need to charge the law.
Welcome to Rugby league we got there a few years before you but if you leave your name at the door we will consider your application 😂
it removes the tactical aspect of the game I'm not too fond of the these changes
Oh bollocks. Just slows the whole game down. Adapt
The WR want this rule because the rest of northern hemisphere is fearful of southern. Hemispheres strength don’t ruin the game
All we called upon Doctor Rassie Erasmus
It's all about preventing South Africa from dominating rugby
Who cares what he thinks better to ask the big rugby fans who follow and support if they would continue watching never needed the others over the last 80 + years. In that time we’ve some great games with the same rules over the years and rugby has always been a great game without all the know all’s having a say. I only agree with the high tackle improvement where a neck can be broken. Let world rugby make their own league and see how they get on.
World Rugby take a tip from Nigel Owens and listen to him. I bet they didn't even consult him with the new rules. They just suck their thumbs and say change this or that. Why change the rules??
Want to speed up the game? Limit the scope of the TMO
I think that players in line outs should not be taller than Faf. And weigh 70Kg max. Should not been faster than the rest. RIP rugby.
What ever WR do the BOKS and Dr Rassie have other plans within your own rules
Completely agrees with Nigel! The falling of the scrum will lead to the falling of the game! And my interest in this amazing game. WR please stop altering this game to feed your own ambitions regarding who should win and how!! Let rugby as is be the winner and not your petty ambitions! Boklover
