  • The federal government starts rolling back net neutrality rules today. The Republican-led Federal Communications Commission voted to repeal the Obama-era regulations in December. Those rules required online service providers to treat all internet traffic the same without slowing or blocking content from competing providers. FCC chairman Ajit Pai joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss why he thinks the rollback is "tremendously positive" for consumers.

Good there is so much competition on your pole.
There is a maximum of 2, but 90% of the time 1, if any glassfibre on the pole.
And laying out a new fibre network is costly you won't do it where you already have another fiber network thus approximately market share of ≈50%.
Now these natural monopolies wouldn't be that bad *if all they did is selling the infrastructure to access the internet* but that doesn't hold true for cable companies (obviously), Verizon already half a cable company has approval to buy charter and AT&T would still like to buy time Warner.
      • *Content* because all cable companies are owned or own media companies.
      • *Cable* because there is always only one in a given area. And every company always ask the municipality for exclusive pole access (if not subsidies for the service). Cable companies traditionally have supreme market position rural areas because you can run a much faster internet on it then single copper wire, but it's no fiber either (traditional cable that is).
      • *Network* infrastructure aka the larger backend of the Infrastructure that used to be Bell whose split up only upgrade to fibre in metropolitan areas (FiOS, at&t) and to this day only offer what copper can offer to rural areas. Do I have to mention that At&t and Verizon also run ¾ of the wireless network? Be my guest to guess which areas they will prioritize for 5G upgrades.
Have all three in one company and it doesn't matter that Bell was split up. They vertically integrated cable into regional monoplies.
Competition is good but what they didn't do right in the Bell splitup was to account for the natural monopoly. You ought to have splitted the *service* from running the *infrastructure.* Not compartmentalize the company into regional providers. There will never be two highways parallel, two sewer system in a city, individual track for different train companies etc. just because fibre is small it's still too large of investment to build it several times over and over. There will be one.
Either you force the company owning it to lease equal access to it too it's competition (like at&t service through a FiOS fibre) OR you accept regional monoplies then you ought to have net neutrality rules.

The big companies are all celebrating today because now FTC will have to go through a lot of harangues for anything to actually be done. The fact that a former Verizon lawyer can even be elected to the FCC is startling. But then again, we have a Russian spy in command of the Executive Office, and some of us put him there. Look up the hedonistic treadmill, it's a theory is along the lines of: no matter how good or bad we have it, our brains tend to "reset" to a default state of mind/mood. So no matter how rich these people get and how much influence they gather, they don't attain lasting happiness and that drives them to want more. The opposite example is people who have horrible things happen to them like maiming or cancer eventually 'reset' to their new normal and can still live happy lives.

Or the more common tactic of selling "unlimited" internet and then capping total combined bandwidth and threatening to end your service if you go over it even a little bit. You might like to pay for service that you don't actually get but I'm sure Ramon and definitely myself want the speed and reliability we paid them to provide.

"We absolutely believe that families should be safe and secure, and we are doing everything we can to protect them from predators. That is why we are fighting so hard to remove all the locks on our doors and windows."
It's like this man shares the exact same concerns and sentiments we do, and then at the end, arbitrarily makes the opposite conclusion. 🤔🤔🤔

My husband and I are long time conservative voters who do not agree with the decision to repeal net neutrality. We appealed to our US Congressman, Mike Bishop, to vote in favor of restoring net neutrality, but we never received a reply. How long will it be before unrestrained corporate boards and shareholders increase the cost of Internet services to a rate that is unaffordable to all but those toward the top of the income scale.

He is a prime example of a corrupt government. The thing is, Ajit Pai is honestly a great public speaker and that is not good. Notice how he always finds a way to get around the question asked rather than answering. He makes it seem like he is answering the question when in reality he is just avoiding to hide his true intentions.
