  • Most people know that the sun is a star, but have you ever wondered what the sun is made of or how it works? We’re going to turn to our favorite light from the 1970s - a lava lamp! It turns out that a lava lamp can actually teach us a lot about what goes on inside our closest star. But we’ll also tackle other questions about the sun, like, How far away is the sun from Earth? How hot is the sun? Why is it called the “solar system”? And what is plasma?
For thousands of years, almost nothing was known about that big yellow orb in the sky. Thankfully, over the last two centuries, astronomers have discovered a lot about the sun’s inner workings. In today’s episode, we’ll explain how the sun works. We’ll discuss the different layers of the sun, from the core, to the convective zone, to the surface of the sun (called the Photosphere). We’ll find out how the sun produces energy and why people are so interested in solar power.
Although this video really only scratches the surface, we hope it helps you understand and appreciate the center of our solar system just a little bit more!

Fun fact: blue and white stars are very hot and yellow stars are warm

That's true! The hottest stars are blue and the coldest starts are dark red. Yellow stars, like our sun are about twice as hot as red stars but far cooler than blue ones.
