Let's go! I just started watching all the new generation Ultraman shows! I saw x orb, Blazer, trigger, regulos, Z, and I'm watching Decker. Looking forward to your video on orb!
It's the first Ultraman show I watched weekly. It may not be perfect, but man, I can never NOT love X's design. It's my favorite of the new gen designs.
Always loved the return of Birdon & Gomess, Gargorgon was a fun enemy with an inspired design, and that ep with the chief missing his daughters wedding was surprisingly personal. The spark dolls are obviously product placement but i loved the friendly Gomora and seeing them in their habitats was fun
Considering your hot takes on the toyetic nature of modern Ultraman I'd like to wonder your opinions on Kamen Rider and Super Sentai given those shows push it far more if you've ever watched them. Even Rider. Granted I honestly don't mind it because toys are fun. So I didn't mind it in Ultraman when I moved into that fandom. I don't mind gimmicks in Ultraman. I just got tired of a lot of them being primarily being focused on nostalgia. Because Ultraman doesn't have the freedom to have more variety in its design concepts like Rider and Sentai do. Like you're not gonna have an Ultraman who's car themed.
Here's the thing tho. Ultra are older than both Toei toku shows, and is the last to join the more toyetic approach. Naturally, for older fans, the sudden shift can be jarring. Like, compare the shift of Mebius to Ginga with Kuuga/Agito to Ryuki. Honestly, the only way to expand Ultra Hero & incorportate wilder concept & more freedom themes the way you wanted to... is to not make another Ultraman, but Ultraman-esque Hero (Gridman, Mirrorman, Fireman, Jumborg Ace, etc)
with how you talk about disliking the longer transformation scenes and more upfront gimmicks of these later shows, I'd be interested in hearing what you think about the shows that lean even heavier into this like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider. I've been watching Power Rangers since I was a kid so I usually find transformations fun and charming but I can see how others would have a different opinion.
I'd need to sit on it for a video, but for now I can say that presentation and music really helps. I think it's hype every time Kamen Rider Black does his thing because he's hitting these strong poses while a thick slap bass plays in the background, I can't muster the same enjoyment for the transformations in these newer Ultra shows, they rarely hit for me. Spoiler for the Geed video, but it's why I think his rise sequence is one of the better ones, it's got amazing music and the whole "You go, I go, here we go" thing is catchy. It still takes 30 seconds but what we all find cool is subjective anyways.
Edit: TL;DR I think what kamen rider and super sentai accomplishes better in some cases compared to ultraman in their gimmicks and transformations is that their transitions are more smoother in relation to their surrounding story, plus they are quicker as they do them all together rather than finishing 1 then starting from the beginning of another, it could also be because of their tone while transforming as the only ultra I haven't disliked for their long transformation is ultraman z where each transformation felt passionate as well as driving the story forward because Z and Haruki felt like partners feeling and conforting each other in the space where they would usually transform in. I think subjectivly its all about the repeatitive nature of the transformations, because sure the two franchises have a lot in common in the gimmicks and long transformations, but I think super sentai and kamen rider incoorperates them into the action of the story better in the moment than ultraman considering that their transformations take you out of the action for 30 seconds to transform with the same visuals for 25 episodes straight (like how they do visuals on scene before they do all the flashy stuff, while in ultraman they take you out of the action to go into a different space before doing all the talking and transforming)
The series which brought the Ultra Series out of its rut, and began the New Generation era in earnest! While not perfect, it was definitely a breath of fresh air.
Only started getting into Ultraman recently and it was only till recently when I saw your video on Mebius (the only season I saw so far) where I went “yeah I should probably lock in now” and delve deeper into Ultraman Since like the- Idk week or 2 since I saw that vid I Marathoned through all the Ultraman Zero solo content (Zero is currently my favorite Ultraman) and when I started watching X like last Sunday I’m about halfway through with the plans of finishing it either today or tomorrow And idk seeing this vid pop on my TL at a time like this gave me this feeling of…accomplishment? Togetherness?? Like yeah I’m finally officially digging myself into this rabbit hole of giant space people after years of trying and seeing this vid and havin similar thoughts on the show as you do kinda reassures this feeling so like y’know thanks I guess.
Also on/off topic, with how much you’ve shown yourself to not be a fan of the more toyetic style of these seasons I’m kinda surprised you didn’t talk about the X-Riser or whatever it’s actually called I don’t know the general opinions on the thing but personally, as a person who actually like phone Morphers like X’s, I kinda hate that thing with all of my existence
X is what got me hooked on the Ultra series when I was younger, thanks to it streaming on Crunchyroll, and it still, to this day, remains my favorite Ultra series. I even bought the Ultra Replica X-Deviser because I always wanted that toy, but it was always way too expensive. If they ever do an English dub of this series like they did with Z, I am going to do my damn best to make sure I play Daichi
Said it on Twitter but this is the show that solidified my interest in Ultraman beyond the fights I could find on youtube. It isn't perfect but it was great to watch and made X on of my favorite Ultras
X is a show I sometimes forget about, outside of X's designs being beautiful. When I remember it I remember that its pretty fun even if I feel like most seasons after are better
I personally find X as a great Ultraman show. Some of the writibg in episodes is amazing. Like Captain Kamiki's episode or the episode where Gomorah is affected by the dark lightning
Not giving an exact month but the plan is to finish the Orb video, then go back and do a Mega Monster Battle video, then a Zero video. Just so there's something before the Geed review since he's fairly prominent in that show.
X was one of my first shows next to orb and geed, I never really liked this that much. Now as a more experienced ultra watcher I gotta rewatch x and see if I misjudged it. Thanks for this!
Great review! I'm somewhat familiar with this one since I bought the film on bluray. I definitely agree with the over saturation of action figures/cards, fusion gimmicks since I too prefer more simple stuff as well. Still enjoyed it though, especially the cameo by the original Ultraman. Keep up the great work
I'm really glad I'm not the who saw Megaman parallels in X's armors, tho its more like the weakness weapon thing most of Megaman games have. It's kinda like Battle Network/Starforce, with Daichi and X and with Daichi's parents missing being a big plot point, and the dynamic of Daichi and X

My boi Ultraman X, the best ultraman cyber gimmick. Though I just hate the spark doll gimmick at this early new gen ultras. Personally this is my favorite, I love SSSS gridman so it a no-brainer for me.
Personally I love this one (just got done watching the show so I can watch the video). There’s just so many episodes where they do unique things with its structure like some that you mentioned and it kept me thoroughly entertained throughout. My biggest problem was that the stuff with the parents wasn’t fleshed out enough; if they’d dedicated themselves to that mystery the overarching story could have been really good. Oh yeah and I agree too many cameos.
Yeah I find this one okay but I didn't see Ginga and Ginga S before. The cast is...fine. But yeah Taguchi is one of the best and he gets better. I dunno some people love this but I find it okay. The X moves are cool ugh recap. I do like Bemstar Armor but Cyber Gomara is pretty cool. The smart girl of the team is annoying and she's like the imperfect Yuko from Z.
3:46, to make that Megaman X comparison even more clear. 5:53, that sounds delicious!! 11:40, well..coulda been worst. It coulda been both Trigger and Decker. 14:01, it all ended up in the season R/B when Mephilas and some other alien was making a documentary, no doubt also being inspired by Kaiju Walk. Nice use of the Megaman X soundtrack.

Domestication is not the word I would describe the classic aliens playing rugby epiaode. To me, this is the sign of the times on how much things have changed since the old showa days.
My real first ever ultraman was nexus and as a kid,i just closed my eyes back then😅 I watched nexus like 6 episodes and stopped watching when i was 7 years old cuz it was too traumatising for me. My first ultraman serie that i had finished watching all episodes and movies is geed.
Been a lot of Ultras with many powered up forms, until Blazar who didn't have any. Sure there was different weapons but no powered up forms. While Mebius was my first Ultra, X was the first one I actually followed weekly, and for that I really like it.
I don't mind the aliens being funny because it sometimes bothered me and some people in the fandom how they are always evil. Many times manipulating humanity by playing friendly, Ultraseven has a whole episode with the message "don't trust the aliens". So it is fun to see some of them not being psychos, just goofy, makes you remember they're a whole species. But it does take from some of the more menacing aspects they had, they're not uncanny anymore like Baltan or Guts.
I wonder whether you'd be interested in reviewing Netflix Ultraman in the future, i think that would be an interesting series to watch. I also personally really like the series
If I do an SSSS video before an OG Gridman video I'll never hear the end of it. I still haven't finished 90s Gridman because the official subtitles are genuinely unacceptable. In a funny way, sure, but you wouldn't want a video painted by them. It's GRIDlock, basically. Can't do an SSSS video because I haven't done one on the original, can't do one on the original because the state of its release is terrible. If someone wants to get on fixing those subs I'd be mighty happy.
@@ZaGorudan I dunno, given how formulaic and wooden OG Gridman is (and how well the SSSS animes are able to stand on their own feet, minus a few references), I would say you really aren't missing much with that one anyway. Part of what is amazing about SSSS is how we got a couple of the most genuinely incredible anime(s) EVER out of such forgettable source material.

@@srcoeiu6100 I would argue part of OG Gridman's appeal is the mystique, the notion of this "lost" chapter in the Ultra series (much like how Zone Fighter is to Godzilla), coupled with memories of those of us who saw it as Syber Squad. Said mystique does not hold up well upon actually viewing the show; the acting is wooden even by the standards of TV Toku, the plots are almost entirely formulaic, and a lot of it is the same kid-appeal writing (with shrill toku kids who, as always, cannot act their way out of a paper bag) that was supposed to have gone out of fashion when Showa ended. The set designs and kaiju themselves are decent, but the effects are pretty weak otherwise, and basically everything that was good in Gridman would be done better in Tiga and future "proper" Ultraman entries. Were it not for SSSS, Gridman would just be another forgotten Ultraman clone.

Hard disagree. Blazar was a great change of pace because it's like you can set your watch to... Episode 3: Ahah he gets the strength form! Episode 5: Oh here is the magic/speed form! Episode 7/8 ah here's two part with guest Ultra! Episode 12: Ah the recap episode! Episode 15: Oh new upgrade episode!
Honestly agreed. Blazar was good but it gets boring when you actually rewatch it. For some reason, it doesn't have that rewatchability that a lot of other Ultraman series have.

Fun video but i still stand by what ive said earlier. One of my lesser favorites. Its definitely a drastic improvement over Ginga and Ginga S, but mostly towards its production, effects and presentation, but X is still one of my least favorite Ultramen, i dont dig the Cyber Armor, amd the inclusion of 2 clip show episodes really puts me off.
I respect your opinion about x but, I have some stuff I disagree with you. I don't care about the gimmick in the newest ultraman series because, every gimmicks in the newest series are part of the story like spark dolls and orb cards. I think the final forms that every ultraman get is very cool things because, rider has final froms why ultraman can't get one? and they looks better than the base from. I love ginga and victory. Ginga is not the perfect show but, I respect ginga because, he seave the entire ultraman series. I give x 9.9/10 is very very good show ( in my opinion). There are many good shows in the new generation era for me is orb, geed, taiga, z, decker and blazar. I hope to hear your opinion about them and thank you.
Haven't watched, no opinion, but it seems good enough. Except for the kamen rider like armour. It looks so stupid, and Arc will be bringing it forward 🙄

That shot of Gomess walking through the black smoke is full on one of the best monster appearances in the entire franchise, bar none.

If I do an SSSS video before an OG Gridman video I'll never hear the end of it. I still haven't finished 90s Gridman because the official subtitles are genuinely unacceptable. In a funny way, sure, but you wouldn't want a video painted by them.
It's GRIDlock, basically. Can't do an SSSS video because I haven't done one on the original, can't do one on the original because the state of its release is terrible. If someone wants to get on fixing those subs I'd be mighty happy.

@@ZaGorudan I dunno, given how formulaic and wooden OG Gridman is (and how well the SSSS animes are able to stand on their own feet, minus a few references), I would say you really aren't missing much with that one anyway. Part of what is amazing about SSSS is how we got a couple of the most genuinely incredible anime(s) EVER out of such forgettable source material.
@@triplehate6759Nah dawg the og Gridman disrespect is crazy, sure, it'd be just another one in a bunch of hero shows had it not been for the Gridman Universe, but the team put a lot of love and care from the original show into all three animes, if he covered 4S.Gridman before Hyper Agent he'd be like "fuck i covered this too early"
@@srcoeiu6100 I would argue part of OG Gridman's appeal is the mystique, the notion of this "lost" chapter in the Ultra series (much like how Zone Fighter is to Godzilla), coupled with memories of those of us who saw it as Syber Squad. Said mystique does not hold up well upon actually viewing the show; the acting is wooden even by the standards of TV Toku, the plots are almost entirely formulaic, and a lot of it is the same kid-appeal writing (with shrill toku kids who, as always, cannot act their way out of a paper bag) that was supposed to have gone out of fashion when Showa ended. The set designs and kaiju themselves are decent, but the effects are pretty weak otherwise, and basically everything that was good in Gridman would be done better in Tiga and future "proper" Ultraman entries. Were it not for SSSS, Gridman would just be another forgotten Ultraman clone.

Hard disagree. Blazar was a great change of pace because it's like you can set your watch to... Episode 3: Ahah he gets the strength form! Episode 5: Oh here is the magic/speed form! Episode 7/8 ah here's two part with guest Ultra! Episode 12: Ah the recap episode! Episode 15: Oh new upgrade episode!
Honestly agreed. Blazar was good but it gets boring when you actually rewatch it. For some reason, it doesn't have that rewatchability that a lot of other Ultraman series have.

Fun video but i still stand by what ive said earlier. One of my lesser favorites. Its definitely a drastic improvement over Ginga and Ginga S, but mostly towards its production, effects and presentation, but X is still one of my least favorite Ultramen, i dont dig the Cyber Armor, amd the inclusion of 2 clip show episodes really puts me off.

I respect your opinion about x but, I have some stuff I disagree with you. I don't care about the gimmick in the newest ultraman series because, every gimmicks in the newest series are part of the story like spark dolls and orb cards. I think the final forms that every ultraman get is very cool things because, rider has final froms why ultraman can't get one? and they looks better than the base from. I love ginga and victory. Ginga is not the perfect show but, I respect ginga because, he seave the entire ultraman series. I give x 9.9/10 is very very good show ( in my opinion). There are many good shows in the new generation era for me is orb, geed, taiga, z, decker and blazar. I hope to hear your opinion about them and thank you.
