Sometime around the summer of 1997 McGeorge and I started sneaking down into The Utilidors at The Magic Kingdom fairly often. This is one of the first times, and it shows, since we're scared and we keep getting lost.
Highlights include a Chip/Dale head in the trash, Journey playing on the overhead speakers, Snow White about to hook up with some random CM, Samuel Adams riding a bike, and us asking a bunch of people how to get out of the tunnels and up to Tomorrowland!

This is great, thanks for posting! Brings back memories. I worked there from 1977-80. I read many of the comments. To confirm what some other former employees have said, yes, the tunnels are pretty interesting - at first. But they are primarily for employees to get from here to there without being upstairs "on stage". CM parking is at the north end of the property and a bus carries employees to the tunnel entrance. You show your employee ID to a security guard when you board the bus in the parking lot (this is pre-1980, so I'm not sure how much has changed). The main wardrobe and locker rooms were just inside under Fantasyland. If you worked say, in Adventureland, Disney wouldn't want someone "out of theme" - someone in and AdventureLand costume strolling through FantasyLand, etc. Having had my first job at Disney, I was trained in all of their strict protocols, so I think it looks pretty bad to see employees at a supermarket or fast food chain, etc. eating, drinking, or smoking, or just sitting around while on break or waiting for a ride home, etc. That is another reason for the tunnels - so that employees could take breaks out of view of guests. If you were caught eating or doing any of the other-mentioned activities "on stage", you would be fired! And yes, it is to preserve the "magic" for the guests. If you are pretty clean-cut and look like a Disney employee, (and you didn't walk around looking up with your mouth opened like an amazed tourist), you might be able to get away with wandering around down there, but it really would get pretty "boring" after a few minutes. The areas you recorded look pretty much like the rest of the tunnels except for the colors of the walls. Think of it as a "basement", except in Florida, with a high water table, basements aren't feasible in most areas. During initial construction, the "tunnels" were built first. They are simply service corridors. Then when the Seven Seas Lagoon was created, all that dirt was piled atop the "tunnels" and the park was built over it. It is pretty easy to get lost down there if you're outside your regular area. You can tell under what "land" you are by the paint color on the walls - lavender was under Fantasyland, blue was under Tomorrowland, Main Street was green I think, and Adentureland was orange, Liberty Square was red/white/blue...this was a looonnng time ago! Sorry for the long comment! Just got lost down "memory lane". :-)
+Cindy G Thanks for all the info, Cindy! Sounds like everything is still pretty much the same, except now the IDs have chips in them that you swipe to get on the bus. And it's probably a lot dirtier down there after all of these years than it was when you worked there!
Cindy G b if you changed out of your uniform could you get food or just walk around the park on your break or after or before work?
I just recently took the Backstage Magic tour and it was surprisingly VERY clean down there. The Utilidors are truly amazing!
Shaun Puzon they only tour the clean parts lol they don’t let you go places that are unorganized
@@jillianmcallister1012 Yes, 100%. Usually there's not enough time though and not worth it.
Do NOT do this. Since this video was uploaded, everything has become EXTREMELY strict. Anyone who is not in costume will be questioned by Cast Members upon stepping into the tunnels. Security moves extremely fast, and being caught doing this can mean being banned from Disney Parks. It happens. This video was old, and the way things were done then is very different. Things are much more serious now, and going down there may very well mean losing the ability to visit Disney for a very long time.
Britain Vanderbush Thanks for the warning, Britain!
In a way, yes! XD I've worked here for almost four years and there are still things I don't know about the place.
BUT for anyone who is interested, Disney now does a much more in depth tour of the tunnels that takes you up by the cosmetology and costuming areas and gives you a really in depth feel of what it's like to work down there.
There's a hefty price tag to do it, but the things you get to see and hear about are pretty darn cool.
I didn't know that, Britain. Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to recommend the tour to people, since that sounds a lot better than what they were offering before.
I was told to IMMEDIATELY call security if I see someone in these without their badge and or nametag on display if they refuse to be escorted back on stage
Mickey built the utilidors.
It's not exactly an urban legend. My cousins worked there and they use the tunnels to move between locations so the kids don't see workers and performers walking around. Apparently that would "ruin the magic" for them, which I kind of agree with. It's not like it's a super secret thing
I know right? There's nothing "dark" about it
kids get abducted down into the tunnels
i am curious to know @THATSnotMY, what about food for restaurants? is the food moved through the tunnels as well ? What about sit down restaurants?
I went through a cast members only door by the bathrooms in MGM across the street from the vacation club booth and I went around to some stairs and once I heard "Whatcha looking for bud?" I hauled ass out of their so fast.
+Derp Derpson Hahaha, that's awesome.
The Dark Side of Disney
Yeah but I wanted to see more lol... But it was better than getting thrown in mouse jail or even being banned. Glad to hear Adam is unbanned :D
Cleavatron what’s MGM?
Luke Ramsey magic mountain
At least he was nice.
Haha wow, I can't believe you guys didn't get caught. I used to work there and I got lost all the time when I first started. The area where you saw Snow White was near character costuming and the main entrance. I was a character and it was never fun to be stared at by all the cast members while in costume basics, so that's prob why she looked annoyed. :)
"Down on Main Street" echoing in the background is absolutely perfect.
I know, right?! Every time I hear this song it brings me right back to the Utilidors....

That's not a trash bin that Chip is in, it's laundry.
5 year old comment but yep, defo a laundry bin, same thing can be found in grocery stores and marketplaces like Whole Foods. Employees usually either throw their dirty laundry in there or recieve clean laundry from there. On the other side, theres a large cut out that goes down the side of the giant cart/bin
didn't someone just get banned for life for filming backstage? That's a risk I wouldn't want to take.
Many more disney parks tho only way for us to see
We were definitely scared at first, but after being down there for so long and passing so many people, we kinda relaxed a bit. Also, we were dumb kids.
Do u still use this CZcams account ?
@@ashantaylumpkins Yeah, definitely. I usually post a new video every month or so.
what's the symbol on the wall in the middle in orange next to the carousel and treehouse?
I worked for Disney for six months of this year and I only went down in the utilidoors once during orientation. It's nothing special. Just a cafeteria, break rooms, costume departments, a place to eat and get a haircut and offices. I also got backstage tours of Haunted Mansion, Tower of Terror, Rock N' Roller Coaster and the monorail system.
Legend has it that Journey still plays in those tunnels...
January 2024 - it does!
Nobody seemed to care that we were down there. I mean, we used to get caught all the time, but we'd play dumb and they'd let us go. Same thing happened when I went up to The Image Works.
Aí, vim pela Carol e sabia que não era porra de secreto nenhum.

Ah, CZcams comments from nearly 5 years ago. Brings back nostalgic feelings
There are likely plenty of situations in which Guests can end up in the utilidors and as long as you're not causing trouble there won't be an issue, and CMs will gladly help you get back to the park. If a Guest is disabled they may be given access through Disney's Disability Access program. It's also possible for a Guest to legitimately get lost, take a wrong turn, open a door expecting to get to an attraction or back outside, and wind up in the tunnels.
You guys need to get some of the spy sunglasses with the 1080p camera in them
Yeah, that would be awesome. This footage was actually filmed with a Hi-8 analog video camera! Would be so much easier to do (and with higher quality) these days.
yeah just noticed how old a video this is, anyway thanks for replying!
5:45 TOMORROW LAND !!!!
Thanks a bunch for buying the book, and glad you enjoyed it!
I'm so glad you posted this! I'm a former Disney CM and miss the Utilidors, even though they smell. And are confusing. And slightly dangerous if you don't watch out for the vehicles. (BTW, the colored stripes on the wall are for knowing which section of the park you're in, if you didn't figure that out from the video.) They actually will hand CMs maps when you're new, because it's that confusing. This definitely brings back good times!
This is basically an employee break room. How is this weird?
Shinbu1128 it’s weird when you consider the fact you are on a second story when you are walking in Disney World. There are thousands of workers below you, cussing, smoking and having regular work drama underneath your feet lol. Disney is such a immersive place it’s shocking to see the illusion shattered in such a way
@@fishels3895 Let's not forget the sex. Yes, Minnie and Mickey do sex it up down there. (Walt confirmed that they're married in private.)
@@fishels3895 I'd be very surprised if smoking down there isn't banned nowadays.
Glad you're enjoying them!
Awesome reconnaissance gents 👍🏻 thank you for your service 🙏🏻
I worked there in the spring of '97 on the college program in Fantasyland. your video brought back some fond memories, and one not so fond one... the Smell. I had forgotten about the music pumping. Thanks so much for posting this.
I love Journey as much as the next guy, but I loved hearing the Bob Seger through the middle of the video! Disney has (or had) a great soundtrack.
Yeah, "Down on Main Street" was super appropriate! Someone knew their stuff.
It’s WMMO, a radio station here in Orlando.
So cool! THANK YOU for posting this because it proves the urban legend is true. People kept saying there were secret access tunnels under the parks, which makes sense to me because what if a repair person was on the other side of Tomorrowland and had to fix something wayyy on the other side of Fantasyland. I'm surprised they had no security doors.
You're very welcome! If you want to see the Utilidors yourself, you can take the Keys to the Kingdom tour. You don't get to see as much of them as I show in this vid, but it's enough to satisfy most people's curiosity. FYI, there's also a very small network of tunnels at EPCOT!
This sucks that CZcams forces me to watch a 60 second commercial, I am getting more and more disinterested in CZcams as are many others . . .
The reason this happened is cause ads are meant for the creators and how they make money.
Cosmic Max Dude this was posted 4 years ago... you really think this person even REMEMBERS commenting this...
That sure takes me back to my CM days, I always had a feeling that if you looked like you belonged in the utilidor nobody would question you being down there. Sometimes if I was off on payday, I would wander around trying to find different ways out after I picked up my check.
I love your videos and I love your book !💞 so cool how you just casually walked in and walked around like no big deal
+Kaylee Carnahan Thanks, Kaylee! Glad you enjoyed the book and the videos. Yeah, you gotta walk in like you belong there, or else you stick out like a sore thumb.
Wow, very cool. So you got to see more of the property than most people do. And thanks in advance for ordering the book!
I love it. It's like some sort of weird Bizzaro World. I can't believe you had the guts to just go down there. That's awesome.
I ended up going through part of these once. The Tomorrowland Transit Authority broke down while we were in one of the tunnels and they took us through these to get out because there were some kind of technical issues.
Just looked at the pictures on Google - I definitely see the similarity. The Utilidors have a very military complex or hospital basement sort of feel.
Thanks for the support, Todd. Sometimes I get a bit behind in responding to comments, but you're right - I do try to respond to every one, even if they're being assholes!
Love how they're just playing hits down there
Bet this is what area 51 will look like when we storm it but less Disney and more aliens
Haha the sone "down on Main Street" was playing. More like down UNDER Main Street. Haha
+mpjvending I know, right? That can NOT have been a coincidence!
@@DarkSideOfDisney Do they play love songs down there? Like this one: czcams.com/video/VT7VCXX50Xs/video.html
Probably the most badass video on youtube... good job Dark Side
Hi Leonard, love the video.
This is great. I used to work there be careful the people with carts will run u over down there lol. There is a very good cafeteria, it's windows are around 4:11 and you almost went in it at 6:56 and on Thursdays they had bargain basement in the corridor. There is always music down there, probably to keep people working nights awake when they are walking to work. It kind of wakes you up. Guests aren't allowed to be there tho and its most likely much stricter security nowadays.
Thanks for letting me know what was where - I was totally lost! And yeah, they've definitely increased security since then. Apparently everyone has to have a visible badge, and the managers are very strict about checking them.
I would be extremely careful with this. I used to work at Disney just recently and they were very strict on the tunnel rules. Unless I was in costume, I had to have my ID on me and visible at all times. The whole point of the tunnel mystery is to keep it a secret and not destroy the magic. Imagine how much would have been destroyed if you had shown some things that shouldnt be seen (i.e. "the zoo" for those CMs who know what I mean). You'd be surprised what Disney can find out...
What are “the zoos” ?
This is pretty cool. I love the seeing how the magic is created.
So I just bought your book and it's fantastic. I'll be recommending it to my friends. Thanks so much!
Hey this is pretty cool. I always wondered about those corridors. Now I know. I could tell this was probably filmed in the late 90s, I love older videos on CZcams.
Yep, filmed with a Hi8 camcorder in 1995! These days you can't walk around down there without a Cast Member badge on display at all times.
Fascinating stuff! How many times did you sneak in to the utilidors?
Like the song says, you don't know what you got till it's gone lol! I've forgotton a lot of the little details but thinking of that brief time always brings a smile to my face.
Thank you for making this! I really enjoyed seeing the ins and outs of Disney. I will say, it was cool to see the fact that they were playing Disney “inspired” music was played. Having Don’t stop believing and Mainstreet playing in the back is a great way to give castmembers a freedom of music choice but still preserve the values of Disney!
Yeah, it wasn't until years after I shot this that I realized the music was all Disney-themed! Pretty awesome small touch. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@DarkSideOfDisneyHaha! It was probably so nerve racking to be in there. Do you remember any other songs that they played? Thanks again for the reply.
The magic is ruined? Not for me. :) I can still preserve it.
In 1955, while sitting on a bench eating a grilled cheese sandwich,
Mickey Mouse was bothered by the sight of a cowboy walking through California Disneyland's Tomorrowland en route to his post in
Frontierland. He felt that while there ARE space cowboys, such a sight
was jarring and facepalm-inducing, and detracted from the guest
experience. Since the California Disneyland was small, such a tunnel
system could not be feasibly implemented at the time. So when the new Florida Disney park was being planned, engineers designed utilidors to keep park operations out of guests' sight. These implementations include transport for himself, Minnie and their friends to get to wherever it is they need to go. Characters such as Alice, Mary, Wendy and Peter fly from London to get to the parks (not exactly in airliners most of the time). Characters such as the Mad Hatter and Tinkerbell enter from portals of light. And characters like Luke and Leia fly into the Parks on their starships.
"Mickey Mouse was bothered..."
Kids these days forget there was actually a real "Walt Disney"
Did anyone notice that the music playing in the background was 98.9 wmmo a classic radio station in the Orlando area.
Yeah it's me again. Glad to see this video still up. Still listening to WMMO.
Those colored stripes on the wall remind me of the ones in the Black Mesa Research Facility in Half life.
Thanks again for the info! It might be dull, but I'd still love to see it some day.
Oh! you know what, you guys should have jacked one of those cart truck things and drove around the park. And wear that Chip and Dale mask while you do it! That would be hilarious! Ok I really want to see Beavis and Butthead go to Disneyland now!
I love how if you act like you should be there, no one questions it. There's so many employees it would be impossible for everyone to know who belongs, and who doesn't. If your there, they assume you should be lol this was a cool video. I came online tonight to research if there were such tunnels under Cedar Point, sadly there aren't. Thanks for posting.
Glad you're enjoying the vids - hope you like the book, too!
Great book - thanks for posting the videos!
Thank you, and you're welcome!
They are looking for Main Street USA and Bob Segar's Main Street comes on 98.9 WMMO radio Orlando.
Underground Disney magic.
It's a secret!!! Actually, it's not. There's a picture of the entrance in my book. Everything is hidden in plain sight!
Glad you enjoyed it. The only other place I know that has similar tunnels is EPCOT, but theirs are much, much smaller and don't run through the whole park.
That's pretty awesome to see. Journey ROCKS!!!!
+Tj Samson Goddamn right they do!!!
There are two very small sections in EPCOT. Other than that, no other park has them.
Só eu que estou pela Carol Capel?? KKK curte ai quem tbm está
I've never been to disneyland/world but when i do im going to find this tunnel. Awesome video mate!
I don’t know if you’ve seen or if you’ve done this yet but, the security is a whole lot stronger now... I think you have to wear a cast member ID with you at all times
I love all your videos ^^
God I love 90's vids! I am old school so I appreciate it. Man I wish I could go back in time and do this with my best friend that I've known since 3rd grade. We are like real life Beavis and Butthead. So we have done this kind of stuff a lot. Surprisingly no one would really give a shit or notice us. Also the security probably wasn't as strict back then so it was easier to get away with stuff like this. That would also be funny if you wore like a reflective vest or hard hats or something along those lines. They probably wouldn't do shit. Maybe you could have hung out there all day. Or you could wear hard hats a be a couple of the seven dwarfs! Then get some action from snow white! Sorry for the long comment, this is just awesome and funny and I love this!
Glad you enjoyed it! You guys sound a lot like us. I definitely thought of us as a more intelligent Beavis and Butthead, but with the same sense of humor and propensity to do really stupid stuff.
@Garrett Menshew - No, no real weird encounters, except for down in the Utilidors, seeing them half in costume, and half out of it.
I'll give your vids a look tomorrow!
+The Dark Side of Disney That's just sickening. They need to stay in their costume completely until they're in the dressing room, and the door is locked!!
moviesperson100001
Well, once they're off-stage, I guess anything is fair game. But it was very off-putting!
+moviesperson100001 maybe the costumes are hot inside sometimes, would you want your employees passing out at work, disney well planned those corridors to keep the behind the scenes trash, and carpenter and building materials out of the way of the public to keep accidents to a minimum, you would freak out at hotels and hospitals that have the hidden corridors....lol
+The Dark Side of Disney apparently you never had to wear a big costume and never got hot and uncomfortable, I was a paramedic and helped the local police depts. by wearing the mcgruff costume, the head had a small fan to help, but some of the classrooms and such got very hot,im hot natured so it would almost kill me everytime,a job is a job, gotta have a place to cool off sometimes.wheredo you put construction stuff and such out of the public and lessen accidents and such, the utilidoors was a great concept...lol
+Steve Nash True, I never had to wear a costume like that. I get overheated easily, so I'd probably puke and pass out a lot! But yeah, I agree that the Utilidors were a brilliant invention and an amazing feat of engineering.
I love how people just go right by
I was there in the summer of 1997 when I was 4. Time flies
i got to go backstage at disneyland twice. once in 2006 and once in 2007. i was in show choir and we got to perform their every year. in 2006 the we renovating/ updating pirates of the caribbean. at first i was disappointed that i wouldn't be able to go on the ride. that disappointment disappeared when we got backstage. we were in this little area that was sectioned off from the rest of the backstage area. the rules were, no pictures, no running around, and you must wear shoes at all times as we were near the area where they shoot off fireworks. as we were waiting around for our host we started looking around a bit. we couldn't go anywhere because the parents were watching us. that didn't stop us from seeing an open warehouse straight ahead. in the middle of the warehouse we saw the pigs from potc and just outside were several animatronic figures in a less than flattering state. some still had their skin on, others where completely stripped down to the plastic coverings. it was totally amazing! the next year the ride was open. my choir got to go on it just a few days before the premier of potc 3. we saw them setting up the premier area with the huge screen on tom sawyers island. again it was amazing!
Wow, that sounds like an awesome experience! Very cool that you got to see something that most people will never get the chance to see.
it was pretty darn cool. i wont forget it soon. it's too bad we couldn't take pictures though.
I just went to Disney's backstage for marching band it was awesome to see all that stuff

Pretty much, yeah. It's a dump.
I remember once when I was younger I think 7 or 8 there was a thing wrong with the Toy Story ride in Hollywood Studios I was almost done with the ride just about to pass the scoreboards when it broke down. exactly I eat there every time I go there ,its just an unthemed disney resturant

So anybody can go there? Thats why everyone here says dont go down there. they dont want everyone else to find the real stuff. i bet they have bars and other stuff for the worker people.
@@greenlawnfarm5827 As long as you're on the special tour they offer.
Due to safety and security concerns, Guests are not allowed in the utilidors, unless if they are allowed access on the $79-per-person Keys to the Kingdom tour. It’s a tour for ages 16 and over, because one has a high likelihood of seeing partially-dressed characters and other things which can disturb the Disney magic for little ones.

Mad that literally no one questioned you once you were down!
Yeah, it was pretty wild. These days you're supposed to have your employee ID on at all times, and if you don't and a Manager sees you, they're required to question you.
Thanks!
You really can’t tell who works there. Lots of people wear regular close because you have to come to the park to do all kinds of stuff. Plus people change into their street clothes after a shift to do stuff in the park. A badge is the only thing and sometimes people take them off.
We're people just able to walk on down there back then?
+Mandyw2000 Well, not technically, no. But they didn't really seem to mind!
I was brave enough to push a cast only gate open enough to peek in once. This was in the 90s as well. I got to see Tigger with his "head off". I thought I was the coolest ever.
No problem mate. I'm just happy you do what you do. What are you working on next anyways? Now that your disney underworld exploration days are pretty much over and all.
