  • Did you know when you are in Magic Kingdom,
you are really standing on the second or third floor of a massive utility structure?
When designing Disney World, Walt wanted a way to hide off duty workers and necessities like trash collection from the guests.
Tunnels were suggested, but the high water table made it impractical. The solution was a huge, 3-story concrete and steel structure.
The first floor houses walkways, utilities, kitchens, break rooms, storage and trash collection.
Guests arriving outside the park walk up a slight incline that takes them to the second floor
of the superstructure which extends over parts of Main Street, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.
When you’re in front of Cinderella Castle, you’re actually on the 3rd floor of a gigantic building!

It’s crazy to think that Disney was able to pull this off.

When Mr. Disney had this built, the Cold War was at it's height, and with McDill AFB being a possible target, he wanted a means to protect all of his guests in case of a nuclear strike. The tunnels are hardened concrete designed to protect against a nuclear blast. That was a man who truly cared about both his employees and his customers. A great visionary and person.

We too have a secret area at my work (historical site).
B1 is accessible to employees only it's the service area for like maintenance and laundry.
B2 is old tunnels from when people would smuggle things underground but the tunnels are unstable so they got brick and mortared but theres steps that go to it behind a locked door on B1

Costumes are not in the utilidor anymore . They are in a giant warehouse in the Magic Kingdom cast parking lot now.

I Remember there was ATV Special either on ABC or Disney Channel back in the late 80s as a kid that I watched with a host who talked about Walt Disney World the underground tunnels the secret restaurant in what disneyworld and Disneyland and what they did a lot down there that Disney itself produced and I remember this guy was a Blum haired man with a whine jacket if I remember and glasses.
They talked a lot about the dramatic system that went to the trash compactor and incinerator in that video and that was a long time ago

I remember some years ago, there was a scandal when young people said that they had been kidnapped at Disney World, and held down in the Tunnels. They described that they were held in many rooms down there. So many people came forward that Disney closed down the Tunnels, but left the outermost room open. Disney invited the Press to look at the remaining open room at the opening of the tunnels, to show that there's nothing there.

I wonder how they get everyone out when the park shuts down? We did the keys to the kingdom tour on our honeymoon. It was a bit disappointing. She only showed us laundry facilities and trash. I did see Woody without his head lol..the tour guide quit WDW at the end of our tour. She told everyone working here is not what it's cracked up to be. I'll never forget it!

@@tammyboyd9928 They clear the shops and the restaurants and close off entrance to the rides and start cleaning the bathrooms and hosing down the ground and benches. Where are you going to go after that, hang out with the cleaning crew spraying you down with huge loud pressure washers? If someone thinks they will "hide" in the park they won't be there long before the night crew including security sees you and if you are not in a Disney costume or wearing manager's attire with your nametag on obviously headed to where your office or 3rd shift employees are working they are going to be asking you where you are supposed to be. After the park is closed there is no way to get back to your car or hotel once the bus drivers and monorail drivers go home except for the bus leaving from behind the park that only goes to the employee parking lot (which is miles away and in the complete opposite direction from the guest lot). It's not like the parks are empty at night, nighttime is when the cleaning, painting and maintenance is all done. The parks are not as quiet at night as many seem to think. A cast member can tell by looking at someone if they are supposed to be there or are just lost and wandering around and security would be with you shortly, possibly with a trespass order preventing you from coming back to the property in the future.
