    I think we should just be able to ride what we want. I grew up in the 70s and we had mopeds that did 50mph and only needed a moped DL. If they would have a real bike lane then ok but in my area I need to be able to go 40 to 50mph to stay safe.

    Definitely need to deregulate E-mopeds/Class 4. Just require a driver's license like they used to.
    I still feel like the classes are useful for bike lanes, shared paths, and parks to determine how much ability should be permitted in areas around pedestrians.

    Isnt your lyric graffiti x gonna be a class 4 since top speed is 45, also itsnt is bad for a motor to pinned at its top speed for a long time so having a bit of leeway in top speed

    • @oregonebikermark8953
      @oregonebikermark8953  Před měsícem

      I wouldn't wanna pin any throttle all the time. Graffiti x is 45+ mph off road mode.

  • @robsimer9296
    @robsimer9296 Před měsícem +3

    I think class 4 would be awesome in rural areas. It's 15-20+ miles between communities in the Grande Ronde Valley and a little extra speed reduces saddle time whike extending range.

  • @stevecumming6427
    @stevecumming6427 Před měsícem +1

    The problem with using speed laws on a bicycle is there's no way to comply. Classes 1 & 2 are not required to have a speedometer. Some states like CA expand on federal law to require speedometers on Class 3 EBIKES, no thumb throttles & helmets mandatory. The speed requirement is on manufacturers to certify their products. The consumer can go whatever speed they can go without getting a reckless riding ticket for their endangering others sharing a road, trail or whatever. Just leave THE People alone IMHO.

  • @simms196
    @simms196 Před měsícem +1

    Class 3 up to 30 mph, class 4 up to 40 Mph. I'm just throwing #s out there. Graffiti X would be class 5. You are right, though keep it simple based on speed. I wouldn't mind if class 4 & above would require an endorsement or something but no plates or registration

    i think you should have to be at least 18 to ride a class 3 or above e-bike. Cars have always been way more faster, heavier, and dangerous than mopeds and e-bikes so i don't see why all the hate. People just love to destroy what's fun imo

    I’m not opposed to them, though I think at some point they stop being bicycles. I’m not entirely sure where I draw that line, but somewhere. I do think there’s some consolidation of laws they should do overall, as I’m sure electric motorcycles are going to become more of a thing in addition to these faster ebikes. I’d like there to be some classes between moped (35 or less) and motorcycles (anything over 35, so a Navi is the same as a Hayabusa). If they came up with sane electric equivalents, they could slot into some of the moped/light motorcycle laws. I don’t think they need to regulate 100 pound or less things going 35 nearly as much as 800 pound things going 80, probably almost zero regs (maybe tags like mopeds, but no more) for 35 or less to more and more the faster and heavier you get.

    As a long time e biker, riding along speeding cars going 20 miles faster than me: do I want to get hit by a car that is going 40 miles an hour while I’m going 20? Safety is relative. Usually we can duck off traffic and get safer within a few miles.

  • @TheLionsDen72

    I dont agree... there should only be 2 classes. Class 1 for minors wich has a speed restriction. Class 2 for adults. We all need to use commonsense and follow speed limits not bs regulations.

  • @Al-thecarhistorian

    I don't agree with you! The premise of the ebike initially was to provide an electrified assist when pedaling. The concept wasn't about speed per se, but rather a more relaxed way to ride a bicycle. A simple assist to make pedaling easier.
    But the speed freaks want to ruin a good thing. I want to ride a bike as a bike. I don't want a driver's license or registration or insurance requirements to operate a bicycle.
    So why can't we do it this way:
    ANY ebike with PAS and or a throttle be recognized as a bicycle and should not provide assistance above 20 mph.
    ANY electric assisted bike that can exceed 20 MPH (the speed freaks can pick any speed above 20 MPH they want) shall be considered motor cycles and should require the same licensing, registration and insurance as any motor cycle with an internal combustion engine. If your ebike goes faster than 20 MPH you will not be permitted to ride on bike paths or trails, use bike lanes or park at bike racks. Additionally these high powered "ebikes" cannot be called ebikes or sold at bike shops. They should be referred to as electric motor cycles. They should not have pedals, just a throttle.
    Leave those of us who simply want to enjoy our ebikes alone.
