Printing a small woodcut for National Towel Day (May 25)

We like to find “national holidays” online as an excuse to highlight or print many of the historic cuts in our print shop exhibit. Today is a good example of that because May 25th is National Towel Day! This day commemorates the work of Douglas Adams most known for his series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
For today, Jared letterpress printed a small hand-carved woodcut from the Lewis Winter Collection. This woodcut was made about 125-130 years ago. Much of the woodcuts Lewis Winter made were of products to accompany text in advertisements in local Sacramento newspapers in the 1890s. The text below the print reads, “National Towel Day,” and it was typeset in 24 point Caslon font. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.

May 25 is also the day Argentina celebrates its first own government, in 1810. Independence from Spain would come six years later in July the 9th.
