So I finally completed this for the first time. I wanted to say a couple things about this video which inspired me to do this task and I greatly appreciate Koon Trucking and you guys for making this.
As others have said, leaving the feeler gauge in while tightening down the jam nut is a huge help and it gave me piece of mind knowing it's good.
I bought a set of feeler gauges from my local Napa for 25$ and I removed all of the other ones off the holder except for the . 50 and . 70 mm and that was a giagantic help also because things get a little slippery and having them attached to the big holder was a major help.
The T handle torque wrench couldn't possibly be 6 ft lbs as others have said. I used a very small ratchet and a 5mm hex socket and it gave me way more control when initially tightening the jam nut. I tightened the valves by feel only.
No one mentioned that the valve cover bolts have an order of tightening and that the torque is 15 ft lbs on those. I replaced my valve cover gasket but it probably wasn't necessary.
I rotated the turning tool towards the drivers side which in turn makes the engine rotation clockwise when viewed from the front of the tractor.
I guess some people were complaining about Wild Bill, hi, Wild Bill BTW!, turning the engine backwards and I don't know enough to know if it matters.
On my first attempt I had managed to get out of order so I slept on it and started from the beginning the next day.
I adjusted according to the firing order and not only does it idle smoother and sound great, the engine brake will send you through the windshield on 6 cyl lol.
Thank you guys for making this video because it gives me more confidence to continue lifelong learning about my equipment and how to maintain it! I appreciate all of you.
Edward
@ Edward Apparently people in the video didn’t listen it was clearly stated the torque wrench used in the video was 6 INCH POUNDS not ft lbs.
@@KoonTrucking yeah I figured it out pretty quickly. Anyway, thank you for this video.
I did listen to the part saying that you could do it by feel and that's what I did.
Take care
This is what makes youtube so amazing. Ive always been terrified to take that cover off, now im looking forward to it and will be putting my overhead on my page too. Thank you!!!!
I just got out of school for five hours I learn more watching this video than I did in school for five hours I’m going to school to be a mechanic
Thank you guys very much!! I just did my Epa 10 yesterday and it took me about 2 hours since I was really taking my time. I'm confident I could knock it out in an hour next time.. I had called my usual shop for an estimate a couple weeks ago and they told me 8 hours labor since they weren't familiar with the Paccar overhead procedure. I got the turning tool for $27 off Amazon and the feeler gauge set for $54. You gentleman are an invaluable resource for Paccar owners.. Thanks!!!!
That’s awesome ! Glad we could help and save you a bunch of money and a trip to the shop !
We also have a BUNCH of Paccar tips and tricks for fixing it yourself in our truck fixing playlist. Be sure to check those out.
Thanks for these mx13 videos. There is very little about this engine anywhere. You guys are awesome. 👍
There's is reason why
Just paid 650 for the dealer to do this on mine. Guess im ordering some tools cause this is way to easy to pay that much and be down 2 days.
You should leave your feeler gauges in until after you torque the jams nuts
Thank you for these videos cause they're not existing outside of This on MX13
Now that is a step-by-step video. Great job.
I knew exactly where you were going with that when you said a way to remember the giring order lol
Just got home from learning how to do valve adjustments on an Cummins ISX at school, pretty good video on a faster technique especially with that feeler gauge set
I absolutely love your videos! Thanks very much and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all and your families.
🤣🤣🤣 Absolutely killed it with the analogy of 15-too you, 36-too old, and 24-just right 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Clay saves the day on cyl 3, could hear him snapping to get attention to the torque wrench hehe.
You caught that huh ! Haha
i have done hundreds of paccar over head adjustments but never with a camera on me.
You should ALWAYS tighten the exhaust adjuster down and push out any residual oil from the jake operation before adjusting the exhaust valve or you will get a false measurement, have had this happen alot at the dealership when previous diy'ers or even technicians do overheads and its noisy
Great video love the amount of details when describing what you are looking at
Wish yall would do one on the starters on them mx
It’s not that bad
Ahem, I believe another fella in another overhead video on this channel coined the phrase, too young, too old, just right in relation to firing order........! Great video, those paccar overheads are gravy if you have the turning tool and an extra set of hands to turn the engine over for you. Good job wally, except for the digital torque wrench, guess I'm just old school and prefer the click!
Haha you got that right ! I like the clock style too. Not a fan of anything battery ! Those ole clickers will still be going when that battery flickers !
i was a tech at mhc kenworth and all of the mx engines i pulled for the camshaft to be replaced. i need a torque wrench that was able to do angles. as a example on the fuel unit pumps on the engine shown, the bolts torque to 22 ftlb + 60 degrees. i can set it up to do it in one step on the torque wrench. it is a huge time saver.
@@wallyhare8616 I'm a tech as well, cummins, detroit and cat primarily but have experience with paccar as well. I prefer a click style because that's what I invested in early in my career when the digital was just coming out, not cost effective for me to swap all my torque wrenches over to digital at this time, so I just do angles the old school way. Plus if I run up on a torque angle I haven't done before, I grab my buddies digital.
Like someone else commented, you have to leave the feeler in place untill you've torqued the jam nut.
Can you guys do a video on MX13 injector removal and installation?
Thank you for the quick response appreciate the videos you put out . Keep up the good work be blessed
Thank You!!
So no Jake, or injector adjustment I take it?
Injectors are electronic high pressure common rail, there's nothing to adjust. Jake's are part of the rocker pedestal.
Thank's for the information Guys ! It's a excelente Channel
Awesome video!
Should tell Bill not to turn the engine backwards next time. Easier to follow the firing order 153624 instead 142635. Also very sloppy holding backup with that T handle torque wrench. Feeler hauge should be removed last after jam nut torque. Shouldn't have to jerk them out either. "Slight resistance" Good try though keep it up just need better attention to detail.
That 15 36 24 thing is great 😂🤣
Love it...keep doing what yell do
That was really interesting to watch. I enjoy the how to videos
Good video 👌👍👌👍thx for sharing.
Good stuff!!!!!!
Damn good video, Thanks 🤛🏻
How are you getting around pulling the injectors to prevent compression?
Great job fellas! What would a fair charge be for such service now days?
Thanks great video and great job
Is it necessary to start adjusting 1 or 6 or it depends on what mark comes first? Thanks …
Where can I buy the specialty tools like the turn out tool and the t handle torque wrench? Awesome video thank you.
Lisle has a paccar turning tool
Mr. Clay, would you be able to turn the motor the same way on trucks with a automatic transmission?
I have a MX13 in a 2012 T700. Are the procedures the same for the overhead?
Have him wear gloves. He's young. It'll save his liver from the oil and chemicals we all weren't aware of back in the early/mid 90''s. With so much awareness these days it's good to be better safe than sorry.
The hazards of chemical absorption through skin has always been known, mechanics just didn’t pay them any mind years ago. And by the looks of their hands, many still don’t.
How often should u get valves adjusted and how much would s Peterbilt shop charge to get it done I have a 2016 579 mx13 with 726 k miles on it
If ur over the road about 100k miles if u are in heavy duty applications like heavy haul or logging etc I would do it more often
Does it matter which way you bar the engine over? Notice you started adjusting cyl 1 than 4,2,6,3,5.
Fan was turning counterclockwise. Viewed from front of engine.
Thank you for sharing
No
It does matter. The engine should be rotated clockwise viewed from the front. The camshaft is turned by the gear train which always has some play so the valve lash will be different when rotated the other direction. In paccars MX13 manual they specify turning the engine clockwise for setting valve lash because of this...
@@RoosterG33rs also Paccar engine support will tell you to run the the overhead in a set if you start on 1 go 360 degrees to 6, and it's better to have a hot engine.
Good one. Thanks for the info.
Great video you guys rock! Did you ever get around to doing a EPA 10? Also if not could you do a video or explain the steps to replacing the valve seals then the process of the over head?
If one come in we can. Don’t see many epa10 engines anymore
Okay thanks
On my 2015 Peterbilt 579 with a paccar MX13, I have a steel fuel line on the back of my block that goes up to the head that keeps blowing, I’ve replaced it twice in a week, I don’t know what’s going on I give up, I’m frustrated and not sure what’s causing it or what else to do?
The MX-13 is a gutless bastard, but it is highly efficient on fuel.
I have a 2019 579 Peterbilt Warning came on Power reduced, due to power train derate. I have no idea what it means. Looking for some insight on what it might be or look for.
Buy you a OTR Performance tool (there’s a link it it in the description) but it will save your @$$ ! It will get you off the side of the road and also allow you to do a forced regen vs being down at a dealer etc. well worth the money czcams.com/video/o10jJYeeZ50/video.html
Sir it looks like you didn't follow the firing order when setting the valves.... because after setting the first valve which was number one,the next valve supposed to be on cylinder 5 according to the firing order...but you did the number 4 cylinder next..why?
Part number on that feeler gauge set? I like that maybe show the hole set?

One of my older videos about a year ago i showed them. It’s been a long time ago but that’s the link to them on amazon. They are great
That link is also in the description of all my videos, that list has a lot of great tools on it if you haven’t checked it out.
Thank you really awesome
It’s a great set. You won’t regret buying it.
Great Video!!! Can you advise me if this video would be exactly same procedure on a mx13 epa 10 paccar?
Yep it will. Check the links in the description and it will save u some money
Koon Trucking You guys have experience with the fuel control valve’s mushrooming up and causing low power and etc? Would be a great video for others.
Great video as always. I am wondering if the same procedure and tools applies to the 2010 emission engines.
I will do one on mx10 engines also we are currently doing our entire fleet so just be patient and i will get to it
@@KoonTrucking Thanks. Looking forward to it. I was actually referring to the mx13 with 2010 emissions, not the mx10
Start with a half pound of black powder and a match
Will this work on epa21?
Great video my question where can I get the T handle for jam nut. Part number?
Talk to your tool dealers and they will be able to order one.
15 too young
36 too old
24 just right
LMAO, got that from the detroit dr in the series 60 detroit overhead vid
👍😉. Thanks.
Cool, thanks for posting. Engine sure looked clean. How many miles were on it?
700ish that’s our regular and strict maintenance schedule with the help of Mobil Delvac oil ...... that is the best oil in my opinion.
I heard there was a special tool for the EPA 17. Any idea what that is?
Can you do a DD15?
Great video Clay!!!! But one question, as I was listening and watching what you guys were doing, I never heard you say anything about the time interval for adjusting the valves. By that I mean, do you adjust every month or 6 months or every 100,000 miles or every 20 miles or only after a rebuild or what??? Video was very informative and very detailed on what you do as you progress through the adjustments. Thanks for the information and thanks for sharing!!!!!
Every year is good as long as it is about 100k miles of course sooner if it is run more like a team truck
My Cummins engine is recommended at 60,000 intervals but it is a 1997 so....
What year is this on
I am a hot shot. But moving up to a pet with a pacar. Has 540k on it. Truck looks great and they only want 39 for it. Is it worth getting
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm using a regular torque wrench but something feels off. It's too tight I can't get the feeler gauge out after.
Overhead...overhead???? Overhead!?!?!!!! Who does overheads anymore??? Oh.... wait....hey just like the cummins!!!! Loo
Haha you know that’s right ! You are the overhead and spark plug king of Cummins !
I just paid kenworst 700 todo this. Maybe next time I will attempt it 😯? How often or mileage should this be done? Thanks for the video
100k
Don't you check your lash before loosinging any nuts too see how far off it got since the last adjustment ? Too loose too tight why did they move or wear ?
Thump up for the trick to remember firing order bro.
I think thats the one think i like about newer cummins is go right off the bull gear on front of engine
YUP
Great videos! I have an epa 10 and was wondering if it’s basically the same procedure but different tolerances?
I’m planning on doing a video on those soon. I have them scheduled to come in to be done
Cummins always been like that from my experience, they just moved from the accessory drive down to the balancer
Where can I get that feeler gauge and t handle wrench and engine turning tool

Have to Google the t handle torque wrench and the turning tool can be purchased through your KW or Peterbilt place
At how many miles you should do this procedure
What's the difference between epa 10 and 13 rockers?
Clay, who makes that torque T handle? Thanks
Seeking precision (made in USA) 🇺🇸 that one is 6 in lbs part number bt-1b
I think he meant seekonk precision.
Where is your shop located? I live in PA.
No jake adjustment required ?
Will this procedure work on a 2011 MX13 also ?
How do you know when you truck needs an overhead?
What type of T handle torque wrench us that? Is it 1/4 or 3/8 drive? Where did you find the Allen socket?
It’s a CTA stubby socket. The T handle torque wrench was ordered.
Thanks. I ran Series 60 for 20 years and could rebuild them with my eyes closed, but we've moved on to Pete's with MX 13's. Thanks for your videos.
Do u know the clearances on EPA 17?
I had my def deleted off my truck but I think they didn't delete properly now it won't crank up I think my engine derated
Is this a new guy that you just tired or a family member or friend or where he come from I’ve seen them in the last couple of videos just wondering how long is he been in the trade
He’s been in it a long time. I’ve known him for years. He just started with me a few weeks ago.
Great video, Does Wally work for the company also or is he outside hired help?
He works for us
In your shop how many hours does an overhead charge out for? I work for a fleet company mostly mx13 mx11 and isx 11.9/15 and on the mx series they bill out 2.94.. I’ve got them down to 1.75 one man hourly
We just do flat rate plus valve cover gasket if needed
Looking for the necessary tools to do overhead work??
You just seen them?
153624 counts set to 5 after 1
Anyone know where to get the engine Turn tool for Less than $200+ ?? 🙏🙏
Where is this shop located? Nevermind I see it
Great video. Any chance you could do a video about a cat engine. I know they are getting scarce?
When we have one come in we can do it no problem
do you work on customers trucks or only your fleet
Customer trucks
@@KoonTrucking where is your shop sir. I would like to get work done on my mx13. It is in 2016 Kenworth t 680.
where did you get the baring tool from to turn the motor over!?
Have to get it from a paccar dealer
What mileage do you recommend a overhead on this engine ? I have 285815 now
We do every 100,000 miles it is well worth the money especially if you plan to keep your truck.
If you ever come through Northeast Mississippi run it by our shop and we will take care of you !
Ok will do thank you
@koontrucking Who makes that t handle torque wrench? All the ones I have looked up are either 6 inch pounds or Newton meters. Haven’t found a 6 foot pound one
I paused it when the top of the t-handle was shown. It looks like it reads 6inlbs.
Yeah 6 ft lbs is unbelievably tight. I believe it's 6 in lbs.
Where can I get a torque wrench like the tiny Allen one?
Just talk to your tool dealers and ask them about getting one. That one is 6 in lbs it really needs to be 2 in lbs for overheads.
What t handle tool is that? I've done quite a few overheard with just a regular Allen tool and this way seems so much faster!!
It is way faster. Someone else asked that question and I gave the manufacturer and the model number in the comments of this video. I don’t remember off hand and don’t have it with me.
Thanks for reply I'll look through comments to find it.
I’m sorry i can’t remember it off the top of my head but I can’t. A 2 in. Lbs would be better than the 6 we used. It’s pretty tight still on the feeler gauges. I am going to order a 2 in lbs one from either matco or Snap On
Yeah I'm gonna ask my mac guy when he shows up this week and I dont buy off of snap on truck anymore because our dealer sucks
Where r u guys located at,.
North Mississippi
After how many miles should this be done???
Yearly or about every 100k miles
How do you know when to adjust the valves? The old engines use to smoke.
Nevermind, just scrolled down and found the answer. Thanks
sr i have problem with my t 680. i need to check the sensor in the botton of the big filter diesel. i have a check engine saying i have water in the fuel
Change the filter and drain the water out of the filter housing
Koon Trucking I am not talking bout the water and fuel element. I am talking the one who is attach to the engine. I have code 97
Daniel Ricketts I’m sure sure I am understanding you correctly ? The code number 97 I do not know what that is? You talking about the fuel filter (canister filter) that is mounted on the driver side of the engine ? Not the fuel water sep but the actual fuel filter?
@@KoonTrucking yes the one in the driver side but mounted in the engine not in the chasis
Where do you get the Turning tool from
I ordered it through MHC you can probably get it through Kenworth or Peterbilt dealer anywhere
Whats the most miles you have seen on a mx 13 just bought a t680 with 1,016,000
Haven’t seen one with a million yet
@@KoonTrucking it has been def and egr deleted. No Metal Material in oil filters or seen in oil I changed. And was also wondering being its deleted the Exhaust back pressure Actuator could I delete it or unhook it and open the flap? Believe it's leaking there makes a Strange whistle sound off and on Turbo was changed sound is still there.
At what mileage intervals would you recommend adjustment?
Yearly if ur doing about 100k or more
Koon Trucking ok cool I’ve got all of those tools already looks like I will be adjusting soon
Not hard and if ur in doubt just play the video
Koon Trucking that’s true. Luckily I’m familiar with this from adjusting and checking the valve lash in my mustang before I make a pass. Every piece of info happens
So ypou barred the engine in the wrong direction.
Hello
