    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Col. Jessep's (Jack Nicholson) upper hand against Lt. Kaffee (Tom Cruise) doesn't last very long.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this military courtroom drama based on the play by Aaron Sorkin, Navy lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) is assigned to defend two Marines, Pfc. Louden Downey (James Marshall) and Lance Cpl. Harold Dawson (Wolfgang Bodison), who are accused of the murder of fellow leatherneck Pfc. William Santiago (Michael de Lorenzo) at the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Kaffee generally plea bargains for his clients rather than bring them to trial, which is probably why he was assigned this potentially embarassing case, but when Lt. Commander JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore) is assigned to assist Kaffee, she is convinced that there's more to the matter than they've been led to believe and convinces her colleague that the case should go to court. Under questioning, Downey and Dawson reveal that Santiago died in the midst of a hazing ritual known as "Code Red" after he threatened to inform higher authorities that Dawson opened fire on a Cuban watchtower. They also state that the "Code Red" was performed under the orders of Lt. Jonathan Kendrick (Kiefer Sutherland). Kendrick's superior, tough-as-nails Col. Nathan Jessup (Jack Nicholson), denies any knowledge of the order to torture Santiago, but when Lt. Col. Matthew Markinson (J.T. Walsh) confides to Kaffee that Jessup demanded the "Code Red" for violating his order of silence, Kaffee and Galloway have to find a way to prove this in court. A Few Good Men also features Kevin Bacon as prosecuting attorney Capt. Jack Ross and Kevin Pollak as Kaffee and Galloway's research assistant, Lt. Sam Weinberg.

Growing up, the top movies of the week were on TV on Sunday night starting at 8.30pm. I got home from work at 10pm, so always missed the first 90 minutes. I came home to Born On The Fourth Of July one night and watched from about the 90 minute mark. It wasn't until right near the end of the movie that I realised I had been watching Tom Cruise for the past hour. He really is brilliant. He's a massive weirdo, but is also probably one of the top 5 actors in the world. To me the greatest roles I've ever seen were Drew Barrymore in ET and Christian Bale in The Fighter

i mean of course they wage war around the world on a daily basis, filling their pockets in the process. but wasnt the initial purpose of military forces to protect people instead of attacking them? somewhere in the movie nickolsons character even bloats about how hes protecting american people...wich bring me back to my original question, from what?

@@_G_H_0_S_T : U.S. Military is protecting U.S. interests around the world, but whether those interests should be protected or not, that is another story. Additionally, the military, in a way, also helps the world with its overpopulation problem; though, it needs to do a much better job, since there are already over 7.8 billion people in the world now (and it is going up very quickly).
America would have never become the most powerful country in the world without using its military. And without U.S. Military being so powerful, there would have been another WW III already.

He's thinking to himself, "Am I REALLY about to accuse a Marine colonel of a felony without any evidence other than my own clients' testimony?" That's why he hesitated. He also assumed, from Weinberg's shaking his head, that the two Air Force grounds crew members didn't recall anything and were only there for show. So if he does proceed, he's going to have to use their forthcoming testimony as a bluff.

@@Pally356 He had to prove that Santiago wasn't going anywhere, and that they were ordered to give a Code Red, which is an illegal order. Since his witness (the base's XO) had committed suicide and the logbooks were doctored to show that there was no earlier flight.
His argument about Santiago not being packed or calling anyone was just expertly torn apart before his very eyes so the only option left to try was to accuse Jessop of issuing the illegal order. But without strong proof (and the word of 2 Marines on trial for murder isn't strong proof) his career, both military and eventual civilian careers, are going to be utterly destroyed. And he has to try and get the man who coldly and effectively torn down all of his arguments to admit to committing a crime. Failure will utterly destroy his future.
That's why he's shaking as he's taking the drink of water. This is do or die for him.

You can see how anxious Tom Cruise' character is with such subtle actions such as his hand shaking when he drinks the water. Extremely good acting as in real life, this would be an incredibly stressful position especially considering what he was about to do in the next scene which could make or break not only the characters career but the course of the defendants lives.

Lt Kaffee is delaying his choice to just the last moment in bringing Colonel Jessop down. This is maybe not intentionally, because Jessop is an intimidating character, practically oozing power. However, the delay and avoidant behaviours among the low ranking prosecutors are enough for the colonel to think he owns the court, which leads to his candor and downfall. Excellent movie.

But at some point, he was consumed by his own ego. He thinks he's indispensable, that no one else can do what he does, and anyone under his command (Santiago, Markinson, the defendants) is expendable. He demands respect, but never once gives it, even to a fellow colonel, like the judge.

Here are some reflections: There are persons like that in any army ( l had a major like this in the military service, who my close protection/signalist/errand boy unit had to work with) but people like that don't reach that kind of positions without having other qualities and the ability to think things through. And then you have the fact that the bulk of the real power are residing in people like Lt. Col. Matthew Markinsons, which in real life would have said "No" and listened to, that would have been it, and if he had been ignored, have made a phone call to their superiors, and colonel Jessop have been reigned in . There is always mutual surveillance among the people in the upper levels of government hierarchies and of course people like colonel Jessops knows it. This would not have happened and the premises of the film would have been dealt with before the drama even started. But then again you wouldn't have your movie villain would you?
