I completely agree. Making the entire MCU into a energy/magic light show made it less impactful and real. What's the difference really between a bolt of magic from Wanda or a blast from Star Lords pistols. Everything has been reduced to a load of CGI lights. The best fights in the MCU had a gritty realness about them, from a Captain Amercia's fist fight in the elevator to Iron Man's village rescue to the Shang Chi bus fight to Daredevil in the long hallway. All felt like the hero's were being pushed hard.

I find it fitting that Tony doesn't say very much in this scene.
He's undoubtedly pissed off about all of his weapons being used by terrorists.
He's also really focused because this is the first time he's used his suit in combat, so he's adjusting to how much of a beating his suit can handle and how much pain he can dish out.
He's also aware that very few people in this country will understand English.
And on the filmmaking perspective, it creates a tone that one man has ascended above all others, and his enemies need to be afraid of him.

The villains were always the weak point of the MCU, even with this movie. Sad cause they would get some fucking great actors to play some of their villains (Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane , Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, etc). But they're usually written as very one-dimensional.
Obadiah Stane is actually an example. Bridges is acting pretty damn well, and when you first get introduced to him he seems like an interestingly intimidating character. But as the movie goes on you realize that he's basically the typical asshole in a suit strawman that sadly gets repeated quite often in the MCU. Once he reveals his true nature and puts on the Iron Monger suit, he turns into a pretty clichéd villain with some generic bad guy lines.

  • @JTman2424

The original comics were even harsher on Tony. He wasn’t just a billionaire playboy philanthropist. He was also coked out half the time and questioning whether his family truly loved him. Ginseng was a brother and first true mentor to him. Not to mention it was the first time he was stone cold sober in years from his coke and alcoholic fueled escapades.
Imagine that Tony, making the realization he was arming terrorists, he was indirectly killing thousands.
That Tony plus this scene, gives you an idea of how impactful this moment is. It’s not a man on a mission, it’s a man who has everything seeking redemption at any cost, even his own life. He realized not everyone is as fortunate or as privileged or gifted as he is. Merely that we all need someone to look up to and right our wrongs. Someone with a will of iron. I wouldn’t say it’s a case of it being better or worse CGI.
The CGI nowadays is arguably better in terms of quality and pixel depth but what makes the difference is the use of it.
In films during this time of cinema this was brand new graphics, the best shit anyone could get but because it was so expensive to use it was used sparingly and thoughtfully.
Nowadays it isn’t as costly for film studios to absolutely cake that shit in CGI with concern for pockets getting thin.
A lot of studios became too dependent so they fail to recognise the importance of prop and CGI hybrids
So at the end of the day we’ll have to wait for that realisation. The very gritty realism is what made cinema amazing.
Only very few movies successfully caked CGI. Avatar being one of them but it makes sense because of the world it’s set in.
Another one I’ll point out that has excessive CGI but works is Guardians of the galaxy, but it needs it. The thing about iron man is besides the suit and few other things, they should stick to prop work and set design.

      @@justjake385 Parts of both.
In this film the suit is both CGI and Practical. The Practical effects were also done by Stan Winston's studio. One of his last jobs before he passed away.
For those of you that don't know, Stan was the guy responsible for Terminator 2's effects, and the first three Jurassic Parks. Stan was a fucking master.
Another big thing is, in this film as opposed to the Avengers films. ALL the Budget is on Iron man, rather than split amongst characters.
Finally, this Film had people at the helm who were working hard to be as believable as possible. Paying attention to all the little details. Like the whirring and clicking of the Suits as their servos push and pull.
Later on, I think they got a little cocky, a little lazy, and stopped caring about those little details. Iron man 3 for instance had a director (Shane Black) who clearly didn't know shit about Iron man, his mythos, and had his own "Vision".
That's the problem with a lot of comic movies, DC especially. They keep bringing in people who have a "Vision". The don't care about the books at best, and scoff at them at worst. Thinking they somehow know better than the 40-60 years of history.
Whereas the best comic films have people who love the character, the books, and point to the books saying "That. We need to make that."
Thomas Jane said it best in his Punisher film. "You have this great, iconic character. Why fuck with it?"

    • @captaf1

@@MaxxCoyote a concept you are all not considering, the storyline is supposed to follow that of the comic books, each generation and iteration of the suit is supposed to mimick the functions of those in the comics, this includes the super far out of this world nanotech which was that of the Mark 50 and subsequent mark 85 suits of armor. Also you have to consider the environment Tony is in, with each movie passing, towards the Ultron era, you enter the realm of space aliens and gods fighting people, and there even turns out to be an African country (Wakanda Black Panther Arc) that has access (and subsequently deep in research) to nanotech which unlike the more practical and clunky designs of the more realistic suits, I don’t expect to have any whirring or clicking aside from the few sound effects of the nanotech moving about, and forming panels which ultimately click close in the case of the Mark 85, making Tony’s later suits a bit more realistic in terms of following the story.

The CGI was so good because the suit is made out of inanimate objects. Flesh is still VERY difficult to simulate digitally (though we got close with thanos) but cars, buildings, pretty much any object has been able to look photoreal since the 2000s. That's why he looks so good, plus the very realistic and natural lighting, in a realistic environment.
If you look at something like infinity war, you just feel like you're watching a super cool action movie, which isn't inherently bad, but that's all it really registers as: just CGI. But here, it's a realistic scenario in a realistic environment.

Hawkeye: *Am I a joke to you?*

There’s one thing about this scene that I don’t see a lot of people talking about, and that is the almost fantastical nature of it from the perspective of ordinary people. Think about it. Since this was the first entry in the MCU, there were no gods, aliens, blips, avengers or magicians. To the general public, the world was still relatively normal.
And then they suddenly hear reports of a village in Afghanistan that was saved from terrorists by a red and golden angel that shrugged off sprays of bullets and fired beams of light from its bare hands. The general public probably thought: “What was it? Who was it? Was it even real?”
I have always found this idea fascinating. The idea of ordinary people witnessing these ridiculous events and characters for the first time and asking these questions.
I hope we one day get a superhero movie that really delves into this generally overlooked part of this genre.
    What do you think?

To be fair, Tony's foes are typically more dangerous than thugs/hired guns. Yes, I know Bruce's are as well, but despite all his tech and strategy, Tony's smarter and understands when non-lethal force would cause more problems in both the short and long term than it'd solve.

Well I don't really care for Batmans no kill policy. The minute he locks up psychopathic murders like the Joker, Penguin, Two Face and the like then when they escape (which they always do) then every person that dies is because Bruce let these fuckers live. None of this no kill crap.
They should be put down like the monsters that they are. This is why I love Judge Dredd so much.
Dredd: Code 3613, the first degree murder of a Street Judge...
Block Warlord: Let me guess, life. Yaaaah!
Judge Dredd: [turns around and shoots] Death. Court's adjourned.

this suit had something his newer suits lacked. They felt and sounded heavy like something made out of metal should be. His later suits always had kind of a plastic feeling to them

I agree. It felt substantial, like how something that could take a tank round should feel. Upon rewatch, the nanotech suit from endgame felt... strangely not protective enough. Like it couldn't actually stand a chance of blocking any big hits.
