      As a UK snack a holic I ranked these all by what I think I like best. 1. Maltesers ( you should try the Malteser biscuits (cookie) 2. Salt and vinegar is a REALLY popular flavour but theres a various amount of textures, strength in taste and the firmness of a chip. (Walkers are my personal favourite but are more a fan of pickled onion flavour 3. Refreshes are A CHILDHOOD FAVOURITE 4. Dairy milk fruit and nut is my favourite chocolate bar. Cadburys all the way but I love the marvellous creations too 5. Time Out was a favourite of mine when I struggled in school, it was a comfort snack for me and still is now 6. Boost bar Is good but it's not a first pick for me. I have good vibes from this snack as it was a chocolate bar I had won for being so successful in hardest college year. 7. Ripples are good but I would rather have flake. Cadbury over galaxy anytime. 8. Drumstick squashes are a family and partner favourite for me we love all the flavours (they have original which is vanilla and strawberry, the sour ones you tried, blue and pink which cant remember the flavour and the rhubarb and custard) but I'm a chocolate kind of gal so I would only pick these if my favourite chocolate wasnt in stock 9. Drumstick bars are again a childhood favourite but drumsticks are in so many differant types of drumstick sweets. 10. Frazzles are a good crisp my favourite bacon flavoured crisp (chip) by far but they would be ones I'd eat if there wasnt anything else 11. Baked crinkleys are good too ( try a crisp called fish and chips. It's a salt and vinegar cracker style chip.) 12. Wotsits (I really dont like the texture and the cheese taste is too much for me. The puffy textures but when in the mouth it doesnt melt in the mouth)
      And to answer the frazzles question. The brand does a few different flavours but completely differant chips in shape, texture and flavour for example you have your normal salt and vinegar, cheese and onion and ready salted chips in the walkers (lays) style but Smith's as a brand is most known for the salt and vinegar chopsticks, spicy tomato snaps (square chips) and the frazzles only in bacon flavour
      Rhubarb and custard boiled sweets are a massive thing in the UK.

    All large Cadbury chocolate bars have a resealable seam that you just peel apart to open and press together to close again, same with bags of chocolates and sweets, there's a peelable sticker on the back of the bag so you can reseal it, it's for portion control so you're not tempted to eat the whole bag YEAH RIGHT!! 🤣👍

  • @dickyampy
    @dickyampy Před 3 lety +3

    Rhubarb and custard is a fairly common sweet flavour in the UK, especially in its traditional hard candy (or boiled sweets as we call them) form.
    Drumsticks were chewy lollipops with a two-tone raspberry and milk flavour for the longest time. Its only in the last 5-10 years theyve branched out to squashies and even a dubious chocolate bar.
    The salt and vinegar crisps you have are awesome. The company 'Real Crisps' are one of numerous gourmet crisp companies on the UK market at the mo and prob stem from the Kettle Chip brand getting popular in the 90s/2000s. Some see these sorts of crisps as prententious as they are often sold in smart bars and pubs for a slightly inflated price but to me they are often a cut above the corresponding Walkers or Smiths flavours.
    There are no other flavours of Frazzles and the only thing similar are a snack often sold in pubs called Bacon Fries but these are a bit less in ya face and more subtle. They are both made by Smiths who are owned now by Walkers (and in turn by Lays). PS - i dont think there is any meat at all in Frazzles!
    Good vid as ever

  • @marcusjay8103
    @marcusjay8103 Před 3 lety +1

    Yes! Things like doritos, walkers (lays in the US?) etc are all classed as crisps. The wotsits, salt & vinegar and frazzles are all crisps.
    Chips are strictly for what you would call 'fries' though majority of our chips are much thicker than what I see in the USA.
    We have a lot more thick cut oven chips too, over skinny deep fried 'fries'.. As in burger King and McDonald's chips.
    A lot of the crisps you are getting are also the baked version, which are a lot healthier and a lot of companies have switched from using oil.
    Curly wurlys are amazing..caramal covered in chocolate.
    The squishies are kinda new here, really old company who make them all but the squishies are new. The refresher squishies are amazing.. They are the 'sour' ones but really aren't sour at all.
    We don't do a lot of rhubarb at all....onlg time I see is in the chews and also hard boiled sweets. Tastes nothing like rhubarb.
    The have drumstick, refresher flavours.. They are all the 10p chews.
    Owwww... I forgot to say, they do a bubblegum version of the squishies too... And the same flavour in the hard chews too.
    If you ever need or want to try anything specific let me know. I'll happily send you anything you want for the cost price. I live next to a major supermarket.
    BTW, fruit and nut is the worst chocolate from Cadbury 🙄
    Have you guys tried the real Cadbury cream eggs? Only out between Jan and end of March due to being Easter chocolate. They are by far the most superior chocolate EVER

However, I work as a Flight Attendant and spend most of my time crossing back and forth across the Atlantic. So I’ve reached a point in my life where half of my groceries are from the US and half are from the UK, depending on whether I prefer the US or UK version. It’s the same for my family who continuously ask for things from the UK! However we all agree that UK snacks are much more delicious. Rhubarb was popular because it's very easy to grow yourself (and therefore cheap). Very common back in the 1960s/70s, not so common any more. Often combined with other fruit (like rhubarb and apple or rhubarb and blackberry) and usually served with custard as a dessert.

  • @markjones127

    Rhubarb and Custard are a traditional what we'd call boiled sweet, a hard candy coated in sugar, when I was a kid they'd be in those large glass jars in the sweet shop and you'd ask for quarter of a pound (or whatever weight you wished) and they'd weigh them out for you in a little paper bag, also in the 70's (showing my age now) there was a very popular kids animated tv show called 'Roobarb and Custard' which I absolutely loved! Home baked Rhubarb pie or crumble were staple desserts when I was a kid too, actually I still make them, my Dad would always grow rhubarb in the garden and he'd put black plastic bins over the plants to 'Force' them which makes them more tender and sweeter, there's an area in England called the Rhubarb Triangle where there are lots of Rhubarb growers who grow forced rhubarb in pitch black sheds.

    Raisins are dried grapes, but so are sultanas and currants. In the UK (and I think some of the Commonwealth nations), the term 'raisins' is reserved for larger dried dark grape varieties and 'currant' for the smaller dried dark grape varieties. The more golden-coloured grapes are called 'sultanas' when they're dried. Cadbury probably uses a mixture of raisins and currants and then labels it as 'dried grapes' to keep the ingredient list shorter.

I must say, I really enjoy your videos, I love the enthusiasm and you seem to have a real curiosity for British culture (especially food!!). Will definitely be subbing now and ringing the bell. Thanks for the videos and I hope to enjoy a lot more.

Most of the people I know refer to crisps as a generic name, for example if im doing the grocery shop i'll just write down crisps and then we pick whatever type we fancy when we are there, I include wotsits in the crisps category but will also understand if someone else said cheese puffs. Im originally from Buckinghamshire, my partner is from Bristol and we now live in Swansea Wales.

    Quite a lot of sweets and candy rhat most people tend to think of as being 'American' are actyally British (you metioned starburst) starburst was originally a british sweet and started life as 'opal fruts' and we're still called 😢opal fruits in Britain until just over 20 years ago, renamed to bring them inline with the international branding and for marketing.
    Skittles, again weee invented in Britain and later exported to the US market by Wrigley's, and another fun fact about them is that the inside of a skittles is actually basic starburst, and it is just coated in a coloured sugary shell.
    A lot of americans seem to assume that things like kit-kats are from America or are Japanese but they are also British, twix are British aswell.
    A lot of traditional American candy was invented in Britain but cane out in America under different names or made by different companies such as, for example, maltesers being renamed as whoppers in the US. Also people think of mars (US) and mars (UK) as beong the same company or at least a division of the same company, and although that may be the case now, originally they were two seperately owned companies, after the owner of mars had a fall-out with his son, the son set up his own compsny im the uk using the mars name which operated for a long tine as a totally different entity to his father's operation in the US. (Until he inherited his fathers company a long time later) A lot of the products were the same or similar as each others, but named differently (such as a snickers in the uk was a marathon etc) but in recent times with both companies being back under the same global ownership, most of the products have been rebranded to the same names globally, with a few exceptions. I still see twix's branded as raider bars every now and then on my travels. There are still those small differences you might notice every now and again.
    Love these videos. You say whatever words you want to use. its got nowt to do with anyone else.

    Ignore any comment that says otherwise - they are all crisps. The aisle in every supermarket that contains these savoury snacks says "Crisps". Obviously you can be specific too but say you were having a stall at a school fete or something you might send someone out to get an assortment of crisps and they could come back with everything from walkers to wotsits, to skips, to pringles. All of them are crisps.

    Watsits have a bit of history. They were owned by a different brand for many years and Wakers (lays) had Cheetos. No matter what they did Walkers could not get people to buy Cheetos so in the end just had to suck it up and buy the Watsits brand and discontinued Cheetos in the UK. Over the past few years they have tried again with Cheetos as a budget brand but they still can't find success with them in the UK. I would not be shocked to hear they were discontinued again. Watsits go from strength to strength with new flavours (steak, flaming hot) and new varieties (giants)
