    If this was the most secure one in Walmart, and it took 21 secs to open, then there must be at least 1 or 2 locks that can be picked just by staring at them with proper intensity... ;)

      I mean, not much more than that, right? The average WalMart lock is (1) shimmable; (2) susceptible to just being pulled on hard; and/or (3) has a combination an app on your smartphone will tell you. Probably a lot of them can be bypassed, too, which is definitely faster than using the key :)

    I did it! First lock I ever picked. Tried it twice to be sure it wasn’t a fluke, too. With a crudely made tensioner and rake I fashioned from some 1/16 tig filler rod and a paper clip. What a rewarding feeling. Thank you! Tomorrow I’m going to draw up prints for a tubular lock tensioner I’ll fabricate with some galvanized mild steel I found laying around that just happens to have anatomically appropriate bends in it already. What an entertaining hobby. That lock has been stuck on my bike for years, wish me luck!

      So high or no cuts are actually more fun to pick when you're doing security pins because you have to push the pin up through a long travel and you can really see the spools and serrations at work. The deep cuts mean you might only get one quick click and an overset.
      At least for me, high cuts that get deeper the further in to the lock you go are the easiest to pick.
      I have three of these locks, one with high cuts going down to deep, one with bitting of 4334 and one with a high cut at pin three guarding a deep cut at 4 which is kinda difficult to pick.
      I'm not sure how far in to the realm of cheating it is to go through the pile of locks in the comedy aisle looking at bitting until you find the ones you feel like picking or not but if I'm getting more than one I try and get one easy one and one difficult one.

Prices ranged from less than 3 dollars up to about 15. I bought a cheap Chinese laminated lock for under $3 just for fun, got it home and raked it open in about 20 seconds. A predictable result.

  • @teknikulrighter8454

    The lack of ball bearings and the extra pin is because this was made for Walmart, and Walmart specifies cheap not good. Companies will literally make cheaper, shittier versions of their products just for sale at Wally World because otherwise the store won't carry any of their stuff.

    • @ethanpoole3443
      @ethanpoole3443 Před 5 lety +3

      If only more Walmart shoppers recognized their own culpability in the race to the bottom and off-shoring of jobs and manufacture and the degree to which their practices ultimately lead to competitors being forced to do the same out of economic necessity since they had to match Walmart prices - and the way Walmart extorts those low prices from manufacturers really ought to be criminal as it really is economic extortion as they even require manufacturers to sell them wholesale merchandise even if it means the manufacturer has to sell the item to Walmart at below manufacturer cost and if the manufacturer tries to drop the unprofitable product then Walmart threatens to drop their entire product line (by which time many manufactures have already been forced to take out expansion loans in order to manufacture in the volume Walmart demands, so having their entire product line dropped would mean likely defaulting in those loans, thus trapping the manufacturer in a bad deal and practically eternal catch-22). We now live in a world where it is remarkably difficult to find a real middle-ground in terms of quality and most everything is either junk or near luxury level “high end”. I quit shopping at Walmart bank in the early 90s when I saw the effect they had on small town businesses whenever they would move into town (specifically Chiefland, FL)...soon after most other shops in town would be effectively forced out of business. Unfortunately, half my extended family still shops at Walmart, but I did at least win over the other half who will not. We humans really are like mindless moths to a flame, show us a piece of junk at a low enough price and we can not seem to help but to hand over our money even when we know it will be junk and will lead to loss of manufacturing jobs and small mom and pop businesses - I swear the phenomena resembles drug addiction!

      In fairness, most consumer grade locks are sold on ease-of-use rather than the security they offer. This is why it's rare to find a lock that has a tight fitment on the keyway. You'll never have a hard time sliding the key in or back out like what you'd see on challenge locks.

    You should try the US General lock from harbor freight. It's $6.49 the shackle is very thick, it has ball bearing mechanism, 5 spools with great bitting and while it has really loose tolerances it uses extremely heavy spring tension to hold everything together and bend your picks. Sure It's not a medeco, but for well under 10 dollars it checks a lot of boxes.

Wiggle a little up & down and it pops right open. 1-2 seconds and no tensioner needed, just a single pick. Really push it in, feels like it's going into springs, it doesnt damage the lock.

The LPL makes all of these locks look extremely easy to pick. But unless you have already had experience in picking. This lock is a definite good stepping stone. Everyone is trash talking cheap locks, but Ive seen this guy and others pick quite expensive locks easily. Anyone that knows how to lockpick will easily defeat most common padlocks. Lpl can pick locks like the squire ss100cs with two six pin cores in only 3 minutes. Most common locks from hardware stores can be picked in seconds. In my opinion, it doesnt make much sense to buy expensive locks that are only slightly harder to pick. The $30 masterlock from Lowe or similar isn't much better than this $5 Brinks. To each his own though.

    Greetings lock picking lawyer. I come to you to say, i am stumped. I purchased some clear locks and learned the basics. With practive i've gotten better! I can open all the doors in my house and a the lock you show in this video. HOWEVER I'm stumped on this Master Lock Num.3 i've had it for years but i cant seem to get any consistence feedback from the pins. The key still works but even with the lightest tension possible the pins seem to grind through the shafts. I can't get it, do you have any tips?
    P.S. I'm single pin picking.

    I have a dozen large brinks padlocks like that. I am a novice picker, but I was able to easily pick them all. This type of locks only keep some people honest. With these locks, I almost feel why bother.

  • @benevolentworldexploder5395

    Definetly not Wal-Mart's best locks. If you exclude their online store you're not seeing the whole picture. I used to be an automotive technician for them and sometimes we would use the computers to look up obscure stuff like enormous tires, ghillie suits, and coffins. Semantics, I know, but you'll find using the .com to be more interesting.

    • @CGPJames
      @CGPJames Před 5 lety

      Braedon Olsen that’s because Wal-Mart allows other companies to sell their products online. If you go into the store you’ll see the difference between that and the online stores

    • @benevolentworldexploder5395
      @benevolentworldexploder5395 Před 5 lety

      @@CGPJames Well yeah, that's my point. The online store is a part of Wal-Mart. And go into a Wal-Mart and tell me, how many products in Wal-Mart are made by Wal-Mart? None. Not even their batteries or their "knock off brand" products. You're preaching to the choir, I'm an ex employee. When selling tires to customers, if they needed something not in stock I had two options: go to American Discount Tire and place an order, or refer them to "our" online store. Also Wal-Mart has a policy against price matching against itself or sister companies. If something was cheaper on the online store, I can't give you that price. If it's cheaper in a Wal-Mart store, I can't give you that price. cheaper at Sam's Club? Doesn't matter. And the quickest, cheapest oil change is actively bid for by competing oil companies. It used to be supertech, now it's penzoil.
      My point here is regardless of brick and mortar or online, the store is always playing the same role between product and consumer.
      The reason its cheaper online is because the item gets stocked with a guarantee you'll buy it, which is also why the selection is broader. Meanwhile the store itself keeps products with the risk no purchase will be made, which determines which Wal-Mart stores get stocked with what. You go to a store in Fresno versus a store in Milwaukee, the products are different. So my argument, which is still valid, is that the best locks are online.

    I've never picked a lock before and I was just able to pick this one after watching your videos for a while. I'm guessing it's got spools on all of the drivers, if I overset any of the pins I have to reset and try again.

    I’m a newbie so I apologize for what may possibly be a stupid question but...what are the point in having security pins? You seem to just mention them in passing like they are really no different than regular pins and they definitely didn’t seem to slow you down either

  • @michaeldaigle7207
    @michaeldaigle7207 Před 4 lety

    I've personally found it easier to reach into the back of this lock and grab the locking mechanism. Opens in seconds, and if you can get one in the right spot it can literally be opened with a single paper clip. It's a garbage excuse for a lock. It doesn't matter how many security pins are in it, if it can be opened without having to set any of the pins.

    Your videos made me try lockpicking myself in the past week. I have a masterlock and i have this lock. I can open the masterlock decently quick with Bobbypins, but this lock keeps throwing me off. Maybe I’m not putting enough time in practicing it, or I maybe just suck.

    Question, sir: You said pin #2 was high cut and wasn't touched so they were using short drivers. It looks like both pin 1 and 2 are cut the same, an apparent zero lift. So why did pin 1 have to be set and not 2? Also, I thought a zero lift pin had nothing to do with the length of the driver. The top of the key pin is cut so that it's already at the shear line regardless of the length of the driver. Can you help me understand what I've gotten wrong? Thanks!

    I have something like that where it was made to look like a master lock, and the name has long since rubbed off so I dont know if it was a Brinks or not. But I do know that it's not hard to pick it at all. I hardly use it for anything except picking. :)
