Video shows road rage attack on I-5 before deadly trooper-involved shooting

- Video from a Washington State Department of Transportation camera shows a contractor getting attacked by a man during a road rage incident on the shoulder of Interstate 5 during the evening commute on Thursday, May 16. The man who attacked the WSDOT contractors was armed with a hammer and fatally shot by a trooper.
In an update Thursday night, a spokesperson for the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) said the Washington State Patrol responded to a report of a “road rage incident” on the shoulder of I-5 near milepost 197 just after 4 p.m.
The SMART said the man had rammed a WSDOT contractor vehicle and a lift that was on the shoulder of the interstate.
Video from a WSDOT traffic camera recorded by KOMO News shows a man chasing a WSDOT contractor around a car on the shoulder of the interstate during rush hour. The contractor can be seen jumping over a barricade before the man starts attacking them from the other side of the barricade.
After the man stopped assaulting the contractor, they can be seen walking back to their car and getting in. The contractor then tries to stop the driver, but the driver reverses the vehicle and nearly hits the contractor on the side of the road.
The driver then speeds forward and appears to nearly hit a WSDOT contractor vehicle with a lift that had two people onboard, operating over the slough. The man can then be seen getting out of his car and getting into the contractor's vehicle. It’s currently unclear if the person was attempting to steal the vehicle, but they were only in the driver’s seat for a few seconds before getting out of and running across the highway during rush hour.
A Washington State Patrol trooper can be seen in the video pulling up to the scene as the man runs across the interstate.
The SMART said the man was armed with a hammer and “an altercation ensued between the suspect, WSDOT contractors and a Washington State Patrol trooper.” The man was shot by the trooper during the altercation.
Law enforcement gave the man first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The WSDOT contractor suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the SMART.

My biggest gripe with Wa.State Troopers they have no training in traffic control. Four hour shut down of major freeway? Detour rather than shut down! Yes people do not get over when ambulance, fire, troopers are coming! It’s a life and death situation people! Get the F out of the way! It could be you needing that ambulance!

That's what I thought. It's like they tried not to see anything.
I was driving North from Lynnwood just after this happened and before the detours. But people don't look in their rear view mirrors. I could see total 15 or more police and fire trucks coming continuosly for 2 miles back and nobody was moving over to let them through until they were right on their bumpers. That cement median down the middle of the highway is crippling when there is an emergency nobody can move.
And every black wheel skid mark on it probably saved a life from a head on. Nobody cares about the crazy guy with a hammer.

Took me 2 hours to get home in North Marysville from Boeing. I even used the "Sneaky secret way" (Trestle to Sunnyside). I can assure you its not a secret these days.

I was heading to Lake Stevens.
I was able to skirt most of it.
I did get stuck in Everett after getting food long enough to get pretty wet. The seat drains right to my berries.🤣
Needed fuel then I had to pick up a prescription.
I didn't know anything about the highway until it was too late.
Even with 3 stops I got home a lot quicker than most people.
My slow (extremely slow) riding skills are improving.

Looks like he was trying to go around traffic and was blocked by the construction. My guess is the workers were not going to stop and move for him?
me too, I don't know that area at all but it didn't look like a place where some pedestrian could just walk up.

He then tried to go through in the construction zone, contractors attempted to stop him, he then tried to steal the bucket truck while someone was inside the bucket (PTO was on so the truck couldn't be moved) he then ran on foot, attempted to steal another car, WSP showed up, a shoving match ensued, he then lunged at the cop with an item after telling the officer, "I'm the boss bitch" and was shot 3 times in the chest.

Why don’t we have better cameras. This isn’t 1972. High definition all weather cameras have existed for years yet out state refuses to install them. These cameras are so important as they catch perpetrators of road rage, accident investigations and stolen cars. Not a big fan of govt surveillance but every inch of I5 should be monitored and recorded. We are getting close to 16 hrs of light a day, yet most construction ends at 3 or begins at dark. People are getting pissed at this lack of productivity and its effects.
with resolution comes exponential increase in the amount of data being sent and stored, if you look at how many cameras are in operation the capacity for that much of an increase in data would be not possible without a huge investment.
Are you going to be the first volunteer of the money it would take to upgrade everything?????

For almost fifteen minutes of cars slowly passing by, no one stopped to help.
I was working near exit 192 in Everett left at around 6pm. To mt vernon 30 miles north at 10:30pm 4.5 hours for a trip that usually take 30 min up the freeway. Insane.

the police were shooing us away because part of the issue getting by was everyone wanted to see what caused this mess, naturally.

My dad is still on his way to get home, he stopped at a restaurant to wait, he was at work and had to go around the free way, where everyone else is and he started trying to get home at 6:00 now it’s 9:30 and he is still not home
It's wild in North Everett right now. Quiet side streets have semis trying find their way around it all amongst everyone else. I hope your dad makes home safe and sound.

@@ThatWeirdAquarius we don't know why yet but some guy tried to steal a construction worker's car then beat up the two construction workers in the process. I think when the trooper showed up and tried to detain him but and altercation ensued and the trooper drew and shot.

My sons dad was coming home from work in Woodinville trying to get home to Marysvill. He left at 4:30 pm and was stuck on side streets in Everett for 6 hours. He ended up going back to his work to spend night. Could not get home. What an upsetting and sad situation. Wtf was he doing??? Good job crew and police for doing a great Joc getting this guy. Imagine if he went further or had a gun. I mean he attacked worked so bad and I was happy to see him get him back in door and slam many times. Sometimes it calls for extreme force. I heard they tazed him but he would not stop. 😮😢 They needed also to have ways for traffic and people in other serious situations be able to move. Not whole freeway and part of Everett locked down. Better traffic guidance is needed in these situations. Everett streets are very narrow in many areas. Tragic this happens 😢. Food gas water etc for those stuck. Elders kids etc stuck bc of this guy. Sad 😔

Next time you need help on the freeway. Troopers will be sure to park on the next exit. Walk back to you a half mile. Since freeways are tow away zones. Wouldn’t want to inconvenience anyone.
Possibly to put some distance between the traffic on that side of the freeway from a potential shooting that could occur on the other side and bullets flying across

idk whats going on today im always on the road never see dangerous things but today i came to a stop at a 4 way intersection lines of cars and some dude comes speeding through the intersection using the left hand turn lane at a dead red light the complete disregard for there own safety and everyone else disgusts me this was in olympia dude could have killed one of the people who actually stopped by the way he swerved out of the way to get into the intersection or worse someone else making a turn on a legal green light

I disagree with the trooper's reaction. Whether there was a hanner or not, he received plenty of shooting training. Why he didn't try to shoot his leg or arm and once hurt, he can detain him. This trooper reacted without thinking. He left his emotions and adrenalin control him. It was poorly handled. I hope his family investigates this as I am sure there were plenty of witnesses to confirm whether there was a hammer or not.
