Lettuce problems/and why 🥬..

- Well if you’ve been following me growing this easy peasy plant .. you’d of seen I’ve tried putting them in 3’s in a pot .. one to save space but to see how they’d cope hugging each other ..went ok but realised how much water I need to constantly be giving them as their thirsty plant.. 2nd batch went into singles which is better .. 3 weeks from sowing to potting on .. they grew that fast .. then sowed a new tray .. nothing germinating bar 3.. thought seeds not right .. sowed a 4th lot .. same thing nothing popping up .. thought maybe too cold .. then realised I’d used a rich compost mix I’d had to one side .. most sowings hate a rich soil to germinate.. more of a poor soil .. I’d been using last years spent compost which was ideal ….lesson learnt lol..🥬

My best lettuce was just direct sown Darren. It of course I put them too thick 🤦♀️ so I’ll do next time a bit thinner. It’s probably getting too hot here now 🥵 30c today (one extreme to another) what lovely flower head and seed 🎉🎉. Happy growing, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

i consider bolting to be good. not only for free seed but they also attract predators in the garden when in flower. marvel of 4 seasons and little gem cos are good varieties to try...................brian
Yes I do like free seed .. I’m going down the root of letting some stuff go to seed .. as I’m finding seed that I’ve bought isn’t germinating well .. so let’s save my own .. plus it’s free
Lettuce don't germinate well in warmer temperatures, Lettuce need organic matter and nitrogen. All leafy vegetables need nitrogen. Achito from King's seeds, red/green little gem, romain all varieties
Once they germinate I have a mix of homemade compost and chicken poop rich in nitrogen.. things is it’s been cold .. not warm
