- A bout of Gastroenteritis aka "Food Poisoning" can ruin an athletes training block. If you're unlucky and get poorly, understanding what food NOT to eat, can lead to a faster recovery, dramatically shortening the duration of symptoms experienced (diarrhoea, abdominal cramping and flatulence).
When pathogens gain entry into your digestive tract they cause an acute illness that leads to inflammation of the Gastrointestinal Tract and malabsorption of nutrients and water. Even after the pathogens have been cleared by the immune system, the inflammation and damage to the small intestines mucosa lining persists, meaning certain foods are less well digested in the subsequent weeks after an illness.
Did you know after a bout of Gastroenteritis we become transiently Lactose Intolerant....
Watch this short video explaining why, and what foods YOU should avoid in the subsequent weeks. Allowing you to make optimal food choices to get back to peak fitness sooner!

Thank you so much for this video and its insightful explanations.
It’s pretty hard to overstate how much this has helped myself and my son after a severe norovirus infection.
Most appreciated!
oh thats a very kind comment...thank you !!! Glad it was helpful
So this explains why the pasta carbonara I had as my first meal after gastroenteritis set me back to the start again
I'm taking the cheese out of the sandwich i'm eating as i'm watching this. came down with gastroentitis 4 days ago. the worst symptoms only lasted a few hours but my guts are still unsettled. This explains the continued weakness as well if i'm not absorbing carbohydrates as easily.
I had a mild bout of food poisoning 10 days ago. I had been wondering why, when I was clearly over the acute sickness, I still had lots of gas, cramping, and some loose stools. I found this video by researching “post-infectious IBS”. Very interesting information I had not heard before. It makes good sense.
very informative video. I just had a bout of gastro that I recovered from last week. Today I had milk tea and my stomach felt sensitive afterwards. Even some carbs leave me feeling bloated and gassy still. I guess it makes sense that the digestive enzymes need to build up/ recover again not many GP's tell you what to do post gastro but only when your in the midst of it. I think at a post infectious state its still important to get correct advice.
Very interesting and very useful as I'm recovering from Norovirus. Thank you!
Now i know why i was having prolonged abdominal pain, i didn't omit dairy
I would’ve seen that coming but I love your confidence
Well, I'm subscribing. I'm in week two of gastero hell, been in n out of hospital 5 times with not being able to even keep down my own saliva let alone the antiemetics (cyclizine and ondansatron) and the a and e ppl say, yes it can recurr and come back, but a day or two after I've been fine again?? I don't know, seems really unfair. Between one and 3 days I'm fine then back to being so sick the ambulance get called for heart rate issues or dehydration. I've HAD ENOUGH .
Decided to sit down and research this more and your vid explains it in more detail. I have been having dairy, so I'm going to stop that n see what happens. Fingers crossed, and thank you so much h if this is half 5h4 issue because I haven't been able to work or tend to pets properly or even get out of bed sometimes, it's taking over my life atm with being so on and off all the time.
Thank you medicine gods for making this vid exist haa. New sub from UK
Glad it was of some use, hope you’re feeling better soon 🤞
@@doctoradrift Thank you so much. Was sick again for 12 hours because I accidentally ate dairy.
Can I just have like er... almond milk or anything like that? I'm not sure where and how to plan my diet for a while, any good sources you know of for this? Takes so long to get a gp appointment but I'll book one on Monday also, wondering till then though?
Again. Thanks for your video. I hope this finds you well 😎👍
@@Sinner1660 it’s not really appropriate to give medical advice over CZcams in case some alternative diagnosis is underlying. But in general in recovery of gastroenteritis I would be consuming bland foods: crackers, toast, bananas, white rice, plenty of fluids/isotonic drinks, and electrolyte replacement such as dioralyte. Avoid foods/drinks high in fat, dairy, caffeine, spice. You may find almond milk ok, as it’s low in fats, lactose free but I think would just stick to above.
@@doctoradrift That's just the kind of thing I was after, I didn't mean to sound like asking for specific medical advice as I am aware of and agree with the reasons why that's not even likely to be helpful or accurate without the patient in front of you, medical history and more. But yeah that list will keep me going till the gp can see me, thank you for your time taken to reply. It is noticed and appreciated greatly.
Thank you, there is a god.
I just did the opposite and drank a giant glass of milk. What should i do now? Maybe drink kombucha to try and catch up?
Interesting, see I've just 'recovered' from gastroenteritis which first started just over a week ago. Upon speaking to my GP about the continued discomfort and weakness I was experiencing, she simply said to go to a 'low-residue' high-calorie diet (most of which say dairy is good but then I guess aren't gastroenteritis specific) and even recommended probiotic yoghurts. She had said nothing of avoiding dairy (which I had wisely avoided in that first week).
I may have to trial & error it, I suspect. In any case, having lingering symptoms isn't fun!
Hope you feel better soon. After gastroenteritis I would avoid high fibre foods and dairy. Once feeling better, wait a week or so and start slowly re-introducing small amounts and taper up to normal diet. Be careful with high refined sugar content foods or drinks, as this can lead to symptoms from overloading the gi tract with too much sugars in the small
Intestines for it to digest and absorb. Excessive unabsorbed sugars will remain in the small intestines and reach the large bowel where your micro flora will ferment excessive sugars and lead to symptoms. White rice is a good option - moderate glycaemic index, carb rich, with low fibre.
@@doctoradrift Thanks for your advice! Interestingly, I reintroduced dairy today and may have overdone it because I had horrible cramps in the afternoon. I'm deducing it's the dairy that did that, anyway.
I see numerous people recommending a 'little and often' approach to mealtimes. Is that something that you've found to be a good idea, or should it be the standard 3-a-day mealtimes with minimal eating in between?
White rice seems to be a good one. Had a bowl of the stuff the other day (perhaps more than necessary) and had minimal complaints going into the evening.
@@NeglectedField no worries.. yeh I think a little and often is a good strategy while you’re recovering. But as you eluded to, listening to your body is key!
Came across this video a while ago and continued to eat dairy and lots of sugar and would notice my stool be loose at those times. Time to stick to white rice 😭
I don’t consume animal products so what do I need to stop eating?
i thought it was obvious to not eat dairy when you have stomach issues ..
Video is too quiet
i have it and it sucks
I have the same complaints, now I have got relieved taking the medication Amalaki Rasayana from planet Ayurveda
Thank goodness for playback speed. 1.25x makes this video easier to take in as he doesn't talk so darn slow.
There is one contradiction. It is said probiotics help a virus. Yogurt is probiotic, the very thing you said not to eat.
Didn’t want a science lesson
Get to the point
