Cool video. I am one who is inspired by Erik. I bought my first boat this summer in Sweden, a Joker S30, and with help from an experienced skipper, we sailed it to Denmark. Fantastic trip with night sailing and all - and I took her out of the swedish "skærgården" and into open water. myself.
Im living in the boat as well, but cant wait to start sailing when I have done insulation and repairs.
Eric is amazing but it was nice to hear your comments on the video. What he does - I would never do - but your comments gave me new wisdom on small boats in big swells and the tipping over factor was very educational.

Eric is extreme and his ability to film it is spectacular , in my opinion he's exciting to watch !
One of the most impressive storm sailing films I recall seeing is "Around Cape Horn 1929" shown by the Antarctic Digital Heritage footage on CZcams - Captain Irving Johnson sailed aboard the German windjammer 4 masted bark "Peking" (115m length, 32 sails, 4100m of canvas) in 1929, reminds me of the saying "when ships were made of wood and men were made of steel" (even though this is a steel ship) ..... not only an impressive story but the footage for the time is absolutely amazing, and he seems to have a similar outlook as Eric
Erik's boat I believe is a Contesa 35.
Eric’s boat is a Contessa 35 so from the same stable as the Contessa 32 who’s reputation in heavy weather is well known. Fastnet 79 and John Kretchmer’s adventures at Cape Horn etc are testament.
Eric sails in a boat where he feels the wind and the waves He actually has done a lot of sailing and his boat is very capable Its a contessa 35 . I find you are a bit mmm how do I say .... most people cannot afford your level of equipment Eric is a true Viking he has lots of safeguards in place, is well sponsored with good equipment. Eric is very capable and has sailed a lot so your comment about him being inexperienced is far from the truth.
I have sailed in heavy weather down wind in a similar sized boat it's tiring and a rough ride
and I do agree about the learning curve, so good point.

Fantastic - thanks for doing this. Erik is a real inspiration to "normal boat" people like me. Small boats are limiting in some ways, but in other ways they're absolutely liberating to people on normal incomes, and boats smaller than Erik's have made amazing passages. But it's really sobering to me, and a good lesson, to hear you say - flat out - that you don't know how to make a boat like that safe. That tells me "how much I don't know."
As for what to do next, a commentary on the boats and rules of the Golden Globe Race would be fascinating.
Chris all Erik’s sailing is like that. He sails in storms because he wants it, he loves it .
He knows it’s dangerous, and he accepts that.

Absolutely- it is fair however to point out that the vessel is not made for force 10 and that extreme caution should be exercised - as per Erik’s own written statements at the start of his video.
His boat is a Contessa 35 and like many boats of that era, IOR etc, it can be a bit hairy downwind. I have a lot of time for Erik, he works in the offshore oil industry I think and something to do with safety training which is a bit ironic maybe. He has a pretty good camera set up with dead cat on his mic, I think that’s the lingo for the fluffy thing on mics to stop wind noise. He has lost a few drones in his time too. He goes through his camera gear in another video I think. I’m with you on the message and he does get some great footage. It would be great to hear you react to the 2018 GGR film that recently released. I might be able to send a link. Keep these going and very professional as always. Andy UK

I think it’s great the safety aspect that your bringing on line, sharing stuff that you haven’t just read but really been in it! Please keep sharing I found your pod cast a few months back and now excited to see you on CZcams! I’m refitting my first sailboat a Westsail 32 now and live on the Columbia river in the Pacific Northwest a hour inland. Been boating all my life my father was a tug captain pull log raft’s down from Alaska to puget sound but sailing I’m happy to be able to listen to someone as yourself with such great experience 👍👍

For the fear part:
I think both types exist.
Irrational fear that can be overcome by learning that something isn't dangerous and rational fear when you have learned that something is dangerous. These types can also blend.
Interesting concept, one professional and highly experienced sailor watching and commenting on another professional and highly experienced sailor's videos. I spent 3 days in a bad storm with 30 foot waves on the Flemish Cap one November, but that was aboard a 100 metre research vessel...and we still found that tough...I can only imagine being in a Force 10 on a Contessa 35 😱 but I like to think I'd jump at the opportunity. But not solo, holy crap.

If you meet Erik you'll understand him far better than his videos portray him. His skills elevate thru Knowledge and Trial & Error. His concept on Fear is that ... Fear is the Danger that an unknown circumstance can hurt you. So know your equipment, know your skills , and go to THAT limit , but don't exceed it.
Eriks boat is the Contessa. He has built her with overkill on all the rigging , and the Rolly Tasker sails are custom made for brutal conditions. Raymarine/Raytheon/FLIR have given him the very best gear, including the new FLIR IR Camera on mast top that detects icebergs !! Now saying that Erik isnt very experienced is you not knowing him. You need to watch more of his journeys and his ' attempts ' where the sea has sent him home. The Iceland video where Eddys-Waves nearly swallowed his vessel. Mind blowing footage.
Eric is arguably the BEST sailing channel on CZcams. It truly is No Bullshit , Just Sailing. Sailing in 70ft+ Ocean yachts and Racing yachts is a challenge but honestly the vessel is able to easily handle roaring 40's with the right person at the helm. Safety in numbers when the numbers are Footage ( length & beam )
Erik has taught me imperative skills and helped my confidence to become a much better ( and safer ) sailor than I was 3 years ago. You might wanna check out another friend of ours
Sam Holmes. He has crossed BOTH Oceans in 26' & 28' Sailboats , very basic , Solo runs , and is a great guy ! He has a lot of silly videos as well , but the Ocean passages are great achievements....
Anyways. There you have it. Erik is a Legend already and if he was in your 80' World Class vessel , he'd sail that to the Moon and back !
I like your belt, SS double buckle. Gerber and knife handy, not in a pocket! Where did you get that? ..... Now that I am thinking about it, you mentioned it in one of your podcasts. Something about selling them? It was an older Podcast.......BTW I believe he has a Sennheiser Lavalier mic under his coat. The EW 112P G4 is a nice setup.
For the most I find JSNB to be well done. It is important to question and think critically nowadays. I cannot help but to point out the many obvious mistakes in some of the popular sailing CZcams channels. Most certinely when they are showing a technique which is out of sorts. My intent is not to be an arm chair critic, but merely offer a prospective and to educate myself along with the viewers, who may be looking at these thinking; this is the way to do it. From my own part I would like to see you do this more often on other popular video blogs like you have done in sailing movies.
As you suggested , yes, would like you to comment on the GGR race boats,
35/36 foot boats Circumnavigating by the three great capes ,eastward, single handed….

Great video... I've wondered many times while watching different CZcams sailing videos, what would CSM or othe folks of that ilk think of the situations people get themselves in... there aren't a lot of people with over 300k miles under their belt. So thanks for doing the CZcams videos and making yourself available to relative noobs like me 😁
Great stuff! Rycote makes great stuff for cutting down wind noise - lil furry covers do a lot to make mics usable in wind
He uses a Rode VideoMic Pro+ with a deadcat and I’m guessing runs it through a denoise filter of some sort in post production to clean it up even more.
Hi Chris, enjoyed your reaction and thoughts on Eric’s effort, I saw it a while back. I wonder if he informed the Coastguard of his intentions before setting off - doubtful, I would think: and in terms of ethics, having chosen to (cheerfully) put himself at risk, would he call, and expect to be rescued by others if it all went pear shaped. In the mountains, rescue team members are generally more than willing to set out in atrocious weather to help bring climbers in difficulty back to safety. I’m not sure if this type of attitude prevails to the same extent in a maritime setting, particularly in this case where our gung ho Viking is not some unfortunate fisherman caught out unexpectedly, or something of that nature. Have a good trip on to Iceland. I was not far from the Faeroes at the end of Summer…Fin Whales all over the place, daily for six weeks. Now don’t go hitting one of the those. All the best to you.
If you watch more of Eric's videos you will see that he does in fact notify the Norweigan Coast Gaurd before he sets out- Just a little FYI- and the Gung Ho Viking has 27 yrs sailing in those waters has constantly upgraded his boat with the best off shore equipment available (most of it given to him by the manufacturers since they can see how well it performs when a pussy isn't using it) as well as being a professional in the offshore industry involved in safety training. I'd rather be on a 35 ft Contessa with Eric at the helm in a force 10 gale than on a cruise ship with 99 % of the armchair capt's here.
That was positive Gung Ho. I've enjoyed several of Eric's videos, like his style, and find his unaffected, boyish enthusiasm engaging.

Erik is amazing and has been producing very high quality content. You won't see any bikini's in his video's.

Interesting to me is the sail setup and how badly it is done is these conditions. The rig is completly out of balance, think COE (center of effort) the stresses placed on the rig due to this are a reciept for diaster. Better staysail & trisail or staysail with reefed main. I agree with you headsail furling is a short term fix and another threat. Doing dangerous exicting sailing for sure can be fun. Maybe not so much at my age. Althougth when doing such you need to identify the risks an mitagte them as much as possible. I believe they call this seamanship 😉

Chris, love your content and its great to see you building your channel and brand. I have picked up some really useful ideas and you have confirmed a lot of my thoughts about sailing on my 35' 1980 cruiser which I short and single hand around the western approaches.
Eric has also been an inspiration, but I am, like you certainly not inspired to deliberately put myself well outside my limits, but being OK at the edge of our comfort zone and just beyond is the only way we gain experience.
If I can though provide a little feedback. Your comments on your guess of Eric being maybe a 50,000 mile skipper being inexperienced are a bit of a poke in the ribs. It isn't only distance that counts, it is time. Does 30 years sailing in UK waters in all seasons not build experience - of sailing in UK waters? Clocking up miles crossing oceans at 300+ miles per day makes the comparison a little unfair. How many hours dodging fishermen at night do you clock up in the South Atlantic?
Size matters also. It may be worth reflecting that in the mid 20th century 35' was quite a big boat. Most yachts in the early days of round the World single handing were production 30ish footers.
Please bear in mind that a lot of your audience sail or aspire to sail smaller boats and sail fewer miles, your work provides inspiration to us all, keep up the good work.

Erik is a Viking sailor, they discovered and populated North America centuries before Columbus sailed into the Caribean.
I like his videos to a point. However, he's ripped more headsails in the last 3 years than I have in 25. And your point about is he strapped on! He often isn't . I'm considerably more cautious.

That said boats of that design are crap down wind…and going between those skerries…yikes. I don’t think the boat size is as much the issue.

I had a very professional sailor taught me the little I know and it was all about knowing your limits, being conservative and being sensible. It's always a case of 'what if' and how you then cope. If you're a dick and play the Nordic hard man that's fine until some other poor bugger has to rescue you or drag your battered body out the sea. Thanks for backing up what I've been taught
Well you know what they say- The Lord hates a coward- but that's why we have CZcams so others can see what its like to do things they can only dream of.
