    A common way of dopamine stacking is eating while watching anything on TV/PC. Both activities are obviously enjoyable.

    This is a great validating topic for an attitude I have adopted as challenge for a very longtime; find the natural concentration in all experiencing, work up to it, progress in self-awareness as you grow in proficiency and mastery of it. Mystics call it; creating a natural field of energy as we progress in deep concentration through an activity, until we enter the “zone” you move energy, mold energy, summon will and energy, whip energy to overcome all opposition to commitment to focus. One would then require little to no stimulants in any activity. You did Justice to the topic, always, great works

    This is so super specific and applicable to me and others. I totally understand this especially with exercise I enjoy. I can get burnt out in a sense and have a huge dips in energy for days at a time after dopamine stacking behavior and exercise.

    WOULD You PLEASE consider doing some dedicated Content for Those who Prefer to consistently tap the Dopamine drip!? Since most don't understand how to handle the "down days" without turning the Drip back up on high.
    Cause On the flip side, a different approach is for a person to flex their adaptogenic abilities. Exercising Resilience, by effective & efficiently handling the dips & troughs of dopamine on those "off" days.

    This is me to a T. I can be very compulsive in nature when it comes to always wanting to take things another step further when it comes to the gym, work, school, and overall life. Last month I really felt myself starting to slow down a lot after working on school for a year straight with no breaks on top of having my firstborn child, smashing goals at the gym and in my professional life while also hammering caffeine in the process. After the end of my last term I've been taking a break from it all and slowing down so I can bond more with my kid and wife and limiting stimulation as much as I can and I can tell that my natural motivation for things is starting to come back. There's a time and place to floor the gas pedal and ride the wave to smash your goals but breaks are necessary contrary to what is often preached by hustle culture.

      "so I can bond more with my kid and wife" I am glad more and more people realize this aspect. We forget these are drugs and when we consume them we are in superhuman state, not natural state and it really disconnects us from our emotional side. We feel less empathetic and caring and we are just in this go go go mode. There is a reason drugs are part of every war. Nazis were on all kinds of drugs like amphetamines which enabled them to be these monsters.

    I took caffeine way too much two years ago. Also before the gym. Now, i completely quit caffeine and i am fitter than ever. For people with adhd i suggest being very cautious with caffeine and trying to release dopamine like fireworks.

      I'm on the recovery period from quitting caffeine and really finding it difficult to stay focussed and maintain energy. But hoping it'll be worth it

I'm often anxious watching a 2 hour podcast that is so highly intense with information like yours are, so I only watch your full pods when some topic is like so painful to me. (I'm ADHD). But this clip is so useful! Also your podcast with Lex or Joe Rogan are very easy for me to listen I think because they are more relaxed and more like story telling, rather than list of useful facts.       I thought the same but started to listen to the full episodes and they don't feel that log, andrew is a very good comunicator. You dont even have to listen to it fully: i sometimes listen just during my commute. I try to write in a notes app the most actionable advice in very simple terms like "listen to music for 15 min before tasks, not during" etc

    I grew up Muslim, and the things we used to do in Ramadan while fasting were very challenging both physically and mentally. a lot of people try to add things before doing the task, try removing things not adding more and more, we don't need much in life, everything is in our heads.

      We can do workout even intense workout but most of time we do it just before iftar (breaking fast)

    You probably like doing it because you enjoy the process of keeping yourself healthy, not just the feeling you get afterward. That's how it is with me. A lot of people are more focused on the after feeling or how they will eventually look, that they forget all about the process. I've grown to love pushing myself every day.

    This is EXACTLY WHY I got severely depressed
    I used to go to the gym 7 days a week, with pre-workout high caffeinated drinks, and listen to loud agressive metal, specially trash metal
    First, my cognitive capacity diminished until I couldn't study anymore, then until I COULDN'T THINK ANYMORE
    Then, I couldn't go to the gym anymore
    After 6 months I got better with the help of two antidepressants, and an anticovulsivant
    Now I returned to college, and from the past 3 months I've been doing intense workouts without caffeine and music

      Glad to hear you’re doing better 👍 quick question, are you still hiting the gym 7 days a week? I’m asking because I don’t drink coffee, take no supplements, and my day to day morning routing is to fast walk in the park combined with stretching exercises 99,9% on a daily basis), and I’ve noticed days like today with worse mood, a bit aggressive in behavior and was wondering if after times my dopamine baseline reached a certain level, where what I’m doing I so no more good enough. If that’s the case then I’m puzzled as to what to do. Stop taking cold showers post workout, skip workout? Skipping workouts on the other hand makes me feel uncomfortable idk we are truly a mysterious species 😢

      Actually I forgot to say, now I only do workouts 5/7 days a week
      I also hate to rest, but unfortunately, at least for me, it's necessary
      Those two "rest" days are on the weekend, and I make use of them to eat and sleep a lot

    I quit caffeine and other stimulants for the month of november, which resulted in the most tired days I had in a long time. My energy levels by now are normalized, but what you say at 5:37 is so true lol.
    Beforehand you mentioned the part about yerba mate and coffee stack. I too noticed that when I stack too many things, that I have these down days. This probably made the hard stop so much more extreme. I didnt have headaches and so tho, which could be a symptom. Just especially the first day hardcore fatigue and so damn tired lol
    Happy to drink my tea or coffee the 1st of december again tho :)

    One of the stacks almost everyone does, me included, is eating and watching CZcams/TV. One of the best things, but like Andrew said, on its own these activities feel kind of empty..

      Yeah when I became older as a teenager I started listening to music while playing videogames after drinking coffee to keep it interesting enough. The videogames alone didn't do it anymore.

    This is the problem with weed. It enhances your senses so you enjoy things like music more but if you do it too often after a while you can't enjoy those things without it.

      Every drug is like a debt you take. You get something quickly and easily and you'll pay it back with interest. This makes sense in a lot of cases with money. But with your body/brain not so much.

      The problem with weed is not that you don’t enjoy the activity anymore, it’s that it takes more weed to achieve the same level of interest, which is bad for health and overall cognition when you start consuming all day long

      That's why I vape weed only once or twice a week not too late before bed time and not when I train. I use 0,1 and I don't drink alcohol, when I wake up I feel fresh

    Cannabis and snowboarding is mine, and previously included alcohol as well. I cut the booze, really want to cut the weed too and just go back to enjoying that natural high. Thanks for the relatable video

    I love the term "Intrinsic motivation." I like to think the refusal to believe that anything can be done with intrinsic motivation is actually just a rationalization of addictive behavior. I know this sounds like a gross oversimplification, and for some people perhaps it is, but if one abstains from this 'unneccesary/auxillary' behavior or 'dopamine stack' for long enough, baseline levels fall in line with intrinsic motivational levels as long as they are maintained there. Easier said than done, of course!

      this is so god damn true, I talk to people who say "that's fine that it works for you, my brain isn't wired for intrinsic motivation, I need to reward myself for eating well and exercising." People just feel the urge to do these things and don't know how to get rid of the pressuring urge other than giving into it, which they perceive as a "reward".

    I am freom Argentina. Here we drink mate like is almost water... I discovered for my self also that it allways make me felt with "a company" while I was doing things. But then I realise that I was working less time in terms of focus every time I drinked some mate while working. In the end I discovered that I fell a lot better for more time if I dont drink anything (maybe some tea sometimes only). It is nice to hear that you also took mate xD.
    For me it was like I was giving my self a reward BEFORE starting to work. That is bad (for me) because I do also my self love what I do, and love most of what I do. I think I can even fell the dopamine hits when I am doing something that I enjoy (this past years, ofc I did knew anything about dopamine hits 4-5 years ago).
    Maybe I am just privilaged in that manner. I mean, most people tend to look for anything else to do while they work, so they can focus more. I do the oposite, I try to understand where I am losing focus, since, tbh, I love doing hard stuff (even tho i have wasted many times my days, fact is, If I am able to put my self into doing the hard work, I enjoy that like maybe nothing else).
    I think a key for me was: STOP looking at "hiugh quality" content on YT. Like "highlights nadal vs federer", or stuff like that. Is like I was all day puting the dopamine hits into looking "something incredible", since I like "quality stuff" and I like to do a LOT of stuff. Now I try to put that dopamine into my self, and maybe watch some cool content like these. Also my work needs a lot of dopamine I belive, it is a really competitive atmosphere (playing poker for a life).

      I'm from syria and we do the same thing here, I'm not a big fan of coffee but addicted to mate, I can never study, wach tv, or sit with my friends or even eating breakfast without it
      but i don't think it's the best pre workout cuz it gives that feeling of relaxation
      however I'm trying to cut off drinking mate later in the day cuz it's really messing up my sleep :(

    Also for caffeine minmaxing, yerba mate is the better at keeping caffeine levels more stable for longer time because of the dosage, coffee hits all the caffeine at once and then good luck. yerba mate comes in less but constant caffeine consumption resulting in a lesser energy rollercoaster

    Some people will take the 8 essential amino acids in a powder or pill form after a work out or they may take it along with a protein shake or a meal. Although, those amino acids assist with dopamine release, I think they’re using it more to build muscle and recovery from the work out. Others will just take B vitamins and electrolytes but unfortunately, most companies that sell those products add too many fillers. Only a few are filler free and will actually be of benefit to a work out. Although, intermittent fasting aids with the autophagy process, so it seems that there would not be a need to take all those additional supplements and a person can complete their morning work out, maybe only supplementing with some B vitamins or nutritional yeast and a clean electrolyte powder then wait for their first meal around noon. I added some electrolyte drops to my morning coffee today for the first time. I start my day with hydration but if I use caffeine to assist with a morning work out, I also don’t want it to deplete my electrolytes. Coffee is relatively inexpensive, but all these other supplements are not. I also want to enjoy my cup of coffee, for the warmth and flavor.

    I remember Huberman talking about random intermitent rewards and changes when doing an activity. Namely about 30 percent of the time do not reward yourself with anything at the end of the task that you usually reward yourself.
    This seems like the next step.

    Good advice. The opposite is true as well however. You can be around a lot of natural stimulants and depending on social undevelopment issues you can sort of condition yourself to truly hate doing certain things and convince yourself that bad habits are good habits etc.
    For example, sleeping with a fan on, or drinking water, or eating 3 times a day, or being around dogs, or music and so on...
    1 random thing doesn't irritate a person, however a handful of random things will irritate a person. So figure out what those random things are so they become less random, then you will be able to push and pull yourself towards your goals. Its sort of like chopping yourself a walking path in a jungle. The more you do it, the easier it is to navigate that path.

    I thought I had adrenal fatigue but maybe I'm stacking too much dopamine? Or not letting my mind rest?
    I am a teacher can you use a lot of mental energy throughout the day. I get so burned out when I get home , my dear a relaxing is a lot of dopamine stimulating things, especially on my phone.
    I have felt so burned out the past couple months My blood work came back good and get 7-8 hours of sleep.
    Where can I learn more about this

    First law of energy. Likely what is happening is the stimulants are allowing you to push past a natural performance plateau by "turning off safety mechanisms"?

    I used to love going to festivals and raves, but I added a lot of estimulants, and sadly it's not the same anymore. I regret so much ruining something I enjoyed before. Don't know how to reboot :(

      Same as me bro. You’ll get things back together. Fast, a lot of vegetables, hitting the gym and find a hobby you love to regain those burned out circuits back. Mine is break dancing.

    I read that cold plunges, ice baths ,can increase dopamine by up to roughly 250%. So if I am doing ice baths before or after a workout …essentially I’m stacking? Truly appreciate your Content and your audience? Ty 🙏

      IIRC, cold showers post workout may be effective at improving recovery, but impede muscle hypertrophy. It's better to take cold showers before a workout for a boost of energy.

    I’ve brought myself out of severe depression doing the exact opposite of this. So now I’m faced with how to use my “depression free” mind, to deal with lowering my comfortable “baseline” without the depression. I’m thinking a very slow taper. Any ideas?

      I “stacked” my dopeamine for only 1 Important thing each day. Ex: a hike. A trip to the gym. Bike ride etc. I’d make it so enjoyable that it would be depressing “not” to do the activity. Then in the evening I would use a hybrid with some cbd. It Would allow me to deal with the evenings low dopeamine.
      I had a list of thing that made me “feel good”. And I Would rotate them daily and weekly. I’d use a wheel spin app (slot theory). So I could not pick my favorite one

      @@taraaaaaaaa1121 cannibis. There was quite a few things. But caffiene. Clean nicotine. Alpha gpc. Psycilibin. Fasting. Just to name a few. The key was taking breaks and alternating. Plus research the shit out of it

      Exercise. Specifically weight lifting. You should be putting on muscle rather than cardio, but riding a bike or hiking on weekends is fine + the gym.

      If I do the cold shower after workout I feel completely drained for the rest of the day, Cold shower in the morning and excersie a few hours later works best

      To poster above yeah cold shower/plunge should be done before workout since it releases dopamine so it sets you up for workout. To the OP from my experience doing anything, be it excercisse or learning or watching, if done without external stimulus wont lead to burn out. It has to do with the way dopamine works. Without caffeine the dopamine starts to accumulate naturally during single task activities, you sort of ramp up to the bigger release at some point and then you feel tired after which you jave to stop the activity. So you are naturally going throigh peaks and valleys so you reset every day.

    Yes, that's the problem with "life coaches" and society in general. Many people try to push you to achieve whatever goals by building motivation. But that's a mistake. What comes first is enjoyment, fun, which is what drives us to do things in the long run. Because motivation is more fleeting than having fun. To hell with "motivation". Find out what kind of work you enjoy, what kind of physical activity you enjoy, what kind of hobbies you enjoy.

    I adore weightlifting. I wake 5am, drink a black coffee, walk 20 minutes to the gym, blast music and lift. It's a mix of effort in waking and getting to the gym, and dopamine in listening to music and lifting.

      @@myonfriendI don't eat a proper meal until about 11am. If I were to eat before a workout, I'd then have to wait for 1.5 - 2 hours until exercise, either pushing my wakeup time earlier or my exercise time later. They say workout performance is better having had some food, but this is what works for my busy schedule.

      I, for one, loathe working out after eating. I always eructate and feel way less comfortable. Also you feel way lighter on empty stomach and eating afterwards is more rewarding I'd say.

      If you can get high by listening to music while working out then go for it dude, your one of the rare ones. I feel like it’s so ridiculous to deny yourself something like that in the hope that your baseline dopamine will be noticeably higher or something. I am bored af at the gym so I’m not going unless I listen to a podcast. I’ll live with the consequences

    I love working out and pushing it hard. But I just feel tired and spent afterwards. After an absolutely murderous session of cardio like martial arts I may get a good feeling for a bit but after lifting weights... never. Only good feeling comes from making PRs and being able to push more weight than last time.

      I think as long as you're not taking other dopamine stimulating stuff like coffee, energy drinks, pre-workout, etc. while working out with music you should be fine

    Trust me these videos don't help. No matter how hard you try. These videos are also dopamine demons. Also listening to something like this is also diving into sea of dopamine. Once you click CZcams app icon it's all dopamine. Thousands of informative, educational videos in front of you. And at the end of the day you just consumed content. And it happens on repeat. We need to embody hardcore discipline about our smartphone usage.
    Things that can help
    - only use CZcams on Saturday
    - only use Instagram twice a week for 1 hr each
    - use phone for calls only
    These billion dollar companies like Facebook (Meta) and CZcams know really well how to addict you. I know I too wasted my time writing this but this was necessary.
