    Thanks for that, just been offered a DRZ, had heard so much about the 3x3 mod but not being mechanically minded didn’t really understand the benefits. That was really clear and helpful. I ride an xt660x a the moment and it shares some of the unhelpful characteristics.

    That was one of the best videos for the DRZ, and 3x3 info, I have ever watched... and Ive watched a ton. I did my 3x3 knowing everything up front that you mentioned but i had to find it from forums and it was far less interesting. Its not gonna turn a tractor into rocket, but it makes the tractor a better tractor. Yes there is alot of info on this that has already been said, and you didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. BUT.... because of its information and how well it was done it should be added to current 3x3 mod forum threads, FAQs, and such, that exist.

    Awesome video! Precious owner did the 3x3 air box and aftermarket pipe... but never re-jetted. My DRZ is a backfire machine lol... I have the JD jet kit and I’m super excited to get all of the improvements that come with it, but mostly to neutralize the fuel air mix so my ears stop ringing!

  • @doccops
    @doccops Před rokem +7

    Good job. I have modded several DRZs and it is essential to use an aftermarket needle to get the power gains, which are low and mid. Top end is not gonna change without FCR carb and E cams. The gains are useful but modest with stock exhaust, change that and it is definitely a lot stronger, again low and mid only. On my S with 15-43 gearing I could stand up and lift the front to balance in top gear, that was with Dynojet kit/needle and CRD pipe. The pipe was free flowing but not straight through, I think a bit of back pressure is a good thing.
    Same pipe on my current DRZ with JD jetting seems a bit less powerful but good fuel consumption.

    Thanks for your service dude!
    I just got my drz, after 10 years of owning 600cc - 1000cc sport bikes.
    Coming off high performance machineS i know how much the airbox design and choke points on it like snorkels help to improve low-end torque, something that 4cyl inline kinda need.
    So when i've read about the 3x3 mod i was like "heck no, that's gonna kill the strong point of this bike! The low end torque!"
    So i just tried to remove the snorkel, and i'm actualy kinda impress, the bike feels much more responsive, and i get less "blips stalling", but still wasnt sure about going full 3x3, mostly also because i can't get a kit here where i live.
    But now i'm kinda considering to go full 3x3 and order single jets from another brand, instead of a full kit, doing some research about the size i need, mostly because the "blips stalling" still happens sometimes, and is very very annoying, even dangerous sometimes, stalling the bike with the handlebars turned is not very fun.
    Pretty sure i'm gonna lose a little bit of low end torque, but the pros seems more interesting than a jerky drammatic motorcycle that shut off randomly :P

    • @willysm1505
      @willysm1505  Před 4 lety +1

      seba alge thanks for the comment. You are right that the low end will be affected. That being said, it’s not drastic and it’s not as much a loss in power but a smoother delivery. Don’t worry about the performance it will pretty much be a stock DRZ... You may consider rejetting it without the 3x3 I think that it would be more than enough to smooth out the snappy low end feel. It’s just so damn lean from the factory. Anyway, good luck. Be safe and keep on rockin the Sumo!

      @@willysm1505 Thanks for the advice! I'll try a jet kit before doing the 3x3 as you suggested, in the meantime i alredy riser the stock needle a notch (3° grove from the top, was in second stock) all the exhaust backfiring is gone now, wich is alredy a great improovment, got rid of the k&n filter that was installed and got a nice twin air foam filter, that smoothed out quite a bit the ride and the bike didnt stalled with throttle blips.
      Thanks! Ride safe too, and for now i'm quite enjoying the sumo, wild and different world from the sbks, especialy performance wise, but a lot more funny!

    Great video. I like the way you did the before and after scientific method. My DRZ400S is stock performance. I have instantaneous throttle response with a quiet stock exhaust. I improved the idle and low end (slow riding) performance by simply turning up the idle slightly. Now when I start the bike, it idles fast enough to run on its own without the constant throttle monitoring, and no jerking at slow speeds. I strongly suggest starting with the idle before making any irreversible 3x3 mods or jetting. I watch so many videos where people screw up there DRZ400 by messing with the performance that was originally set up correctly on a dyno from the factory. Once you mess up the performance on your DRZ400, you may never get it right again. Maybe I just got lucky, because my DRZ400 runs perfect from the factory - plenty of power, quiet exhaust, and instantaneous throttle response.

    What doesnt make sense to me is this...
    You say that it cones too lean from the factory, right? But backfiring only happens when too much gas makes it past the carb and into the exhaust. I have been thinking that my bike is running too rich from the factory, not too lean.

      @willysm1505  Před 5 měsíci

      Not really. Even with a full exhaust, 3x3 and good jetting... I really don't think you would feel that wheelies are easier. 1 and 2 gear you can pop the wheel with only the throttle before and after the mods. 3rd gear you need to make a body weight transfer before and after the mods. In 4rth gear you need a pretty agressive weight transfer before or after the mods.
      For a DRZ to be able to pop wheelie in 3rd gear ONLY by twisting the throttle you would need high compression setup, big bore, better carburettor, pipe.
      For it to be possible in 4rt you would need all of the above plus shorter gearing.

    Would it be even faster if you completely removed the air box? Why 3x3?

    • @willysm1505
      @willysm1505  Před 3 měsíci

      In theory, in a straight line, top end power is acheive by the highest air fuel mixture that you can have. So this is why in drag quad or bike the airbox is deleted "completly". In fact to get as much air as you can, some restriction could be usefull so there is no turbulence around the filter as the speed of the machine increase. Its a science. About the 3x3 mod, first its an aproximation of what works good, is enough protection for water intrusion, its simple to calculate etc. Its most certainly not the BEST and or the worst its just a reliable guestimate of the DRZ crowd. If you did a 4x4 cut than it would be harder for you to ask another DRZ owner a working setup since there is far less data on this mod. With the existing stock air box if you do the 3x3 and jet the carb as recommended by a lot of people you are on a reliable path for good result with pretty much a garanty that you won't brake anything.

      Sure. You leaned out the bike too much. You need to rejet the carb after. If you look on drz400 forum for 3x3mod you will get a good idea how to rejet your carburetor

      @@willysm1505 I'm good.if it ain't broke don't fix it.if Yoshi thought it needed more air they would have put a hole in the box to start with and I'm pretty sure they know more about the drz than I do.if I want to go fast I have a truck for that.

      @@billbonu1639 yhea... its not exactly that they don't know that their airbox are too restrictive. The best proof of that is that on the drz400E the airbox is already unristricted from the factory. For the S and the SM to be road legal they had to muffled it for emissions tests etc.

      I would be shock if it's not working even when there is snow outstide.
