- Buick might have a frumpy image in America, but it is an automotive rock star in China. With rising trade tension, tougher government policy and smarter Chinese automakers, how much longer can the good times go on?

Why China Loves Buick
Why is this old fashioned brand a favored car of China's young, stylish, and wealthy?
I can't say that is much favourited by youth here. The image of Buick in China is pretty much the same: car for old, rich people liking oversized cars.
And for buyers age... officials are registering their property on their kids to escape scrutiny...
why usa people like japanese car instead american brand car???
cos most usa citizen now become weeaboo😂. i think all their room fill with anime action figure too lol
@GamingTV but why GM cars best selling in china?
right now american car more quality and cheaper than japanese car. cos they have china company as manufacturing partner
but if u a weeaboo, all japan brand will be superior in your eye😅
China can keep it. I don't want ever sit in it let alone drive it.
Chinese like thing that is unique so Since it a rare car outside china. They like it for that reason.
@@dwimj Japanese car do better. look around how many 90's Japanese car still on the road. But nowday I will suggest look harder.
I'm ethnically Chinese though raised in Canada. I find Buicks to be older buyers, but my parents & grandparents (whom are from China) love Buicks. The fact the company doesn't try to be "sporty" and just focus on being luxurious is a huge selling point to them and family back in Zhuhai & Shenzhen.
Is that a Buick? Is exactly what I said when I said when I saw them in Shanghai. They looked so good that I almost thought it was a new Acura or Lexus. Insane that they don't sell them here
yep, same response as well, i commented above. definitely the quality build on them (and they are rated very highly in china for quality and not breaking down) almost makes me think of a Lexus of its status and quality in China.
Chiese buy it since they live so close to each other. You buy buick I buy buick. It don't mean much. China can keep them. The rest of the world know better.
I live in Zhuhai, Guangdong China. Same here. Buick is everywhere you look....and so much more expensive than America. Then again, all cars are more expensive, of course.
Yep, live in Shanghai and can confirm GL8s are everywhere
Wy123 You do know how much a truck cost right 😂 and even if they have an older truck the amount of money they put in them would surprise you
My first new car was a '67 Buick LeSabre four door. Many over the years. My favorite was a 1984 Buick Regal two door limited. (Top of the line in that model) , and first car I ever paid over $ 12K to own. Lot of money in 1984. Moving forward, I owned my last Buick a 2005 Buick LeSabre till 2018.
Today I drive a 2018, Chevrolet Spark LS. A small automobile for a person of 97. In Los Angeles it's used for short trips around my Community.
Lets not forget that most of the cars from Buick are rebranded Opels - which since 2017 is no longer part of GM..
Ok that's why some looked familiar to me
Then who owns Opel now? Thanks I didn't know that.
@@bicyclist2 The parent company of Peugeot and Citroën
Pretty funny that the American viewers that are watching this are thinking: "Is that a Buick?' You guys are probably impressed with the improved build quality, but for us Europeans this is weird. *Because almost every car I have seen in this video is an Opel, it's just GM's rebadging trick.* Take a good look. I have seen an Opel Insignia, Opel Sintra, Opel Mokka, Opel Crossland X and even a Chevrolet Nubira (You know, the reasonably priced car from Top Gear) only by looking at this video! How knows how many more Opel rebadged Buicks there are. And this is a big problem for GM because they sold Opel to PSA (the French Citroen/Peugeot car manufacturer). So they aren't able to use Opel's anymore, and making cars from scratch is way too expensive. They are probably gonna use small Chevys like the Spark and Cruze and rebadged them as Buicks but GM quality in particular that from Chevy is going down for decades. This could be the end of Buick in China

Clearly this video wasn't made by car people. Additionally, Zhou Enlai is riding in a Packard...not a Buick.

@@GenerallyGeneralLee and the Hongqi has nothing to do with Buick, does it? And I think Mao is riding in a Packard (or ZIS).

A delightful piece from CNBC which shows automotive "quality" is still hard to define, but a sound product history and good workmanship speak for themselves.
Buick was a great and beautiful ride early on in the US. The 1948 Roadmaster convertible was stunning. In Asia Buick meant luxury and power. It still looks good in China. I have seen them everywhere and often. I hope they get back with better design and execution in the US. I still yearn for that ‘48 in yellow. A jewel of a car!

Haha. Damn right. A 2 door muscle car with a turbocharged V6. I'd buy that over a Challenger V6 any day.
By the way that Buick is going now, I wouldn't get impressed if they start to sell the Opel Cascada (which is a terrible and expensive car in Germany, 33K Euros) under the name of Buick Grand National.

It's a shame they're dropping the Regal, it's such a good looking car - especially the wagon.
I've always loved Buicks. I've owned three and my 94 LeSabre was my favorite car ever
When I was 13 yrs in 93 I wanted and 80s Regal limited 2 door. Then after Y2K I wanted a mid 90's LeSabre limited. Til this day never had a Buick. Maybe one day I will get an ol' duece and a quarter or a Park Ave.
So far I'm happy with my 2016 Buick Verano. Nice quiet ride on long stretches and a very capable city commuter.
I have a Verano, too. A 2014 Base model. Bought it for 14k with 13k miles 1 1/2 years ago. Nice quiet ride, decent power and roomy trunk. Only downside is rear seat legroom is a little shy for adults. If the car was 2 inches longer between the front and rear seats, would be near perfect.
I agree, if the legroom was another 2-3 inches it would be perfect.
Buicks that I love the most: any model from 1955, Rivieras from 1963 to 1970, Regal and Electra from 1979, 1965 to 1970 Wildcats and Electras.

Buick’s are cheap to insure especially when new, nobody steals them.
Friend of mine owns a 91 Buick Roadmaster. We’re from a rustbelt town that is experiencing an untick in crime corresponding with the opioid epidemic. He leaves the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition. No one wants to steal a 5.5 meter long land yacht.
I remember my friends 86 Regal cheap to insure, but kept getting broken into and stolen 3 times. So easy to get into those 80s GM cars.

I'm gonna go check craigslist and look for a used lesabre. My budget is 300 euros!
The Buicks of today are just Opel's vehicles with a redesigned front grill. But in Europe, Opel's cars are really cheap to insure, but sadly they don't worth their price anyway, since you can buy a BMW or a Mercedes-Benz for almost the same price as an Opel, specially the cabrio models, such as the Opel Cascada, which costs 33K €, almost as same as a BMW 2er Cabrio (35K €), which is a way cooler than the Cascada.
Spoken by either a Buick engineer,or an expert thief.
When I go to China and my wife sets up a limo service to pick me up. 3/3 it has been a decked out Buick that was being driven.
My mother had always driven a Buick Park Avenue Ultra from 91 to 2013. She had 3 models in that time and they were always the nicest cars in our family. Even my 2001 Lexus ES300 wasn't as nice as her 2006 Park Avenue.
I have many friends and coworkers who had that generic white Buick Century. They were lackluster and meh. But they were reliable cars despite looking older than their age and having less high end feature.
I think many Americans remember Buick as that car and not their high end luxury class vehicles. China still has these vehicles and they are as terribly over priced as the SUV lines Buick tries to push in the US. The SUV lineup I don't find attractive and I don't believe trucks and SUV are luxury vehicles and they don't deserve a $50k+ price tag so Buick is pricing themselves right out of the market.
Buick needs to bring back Park Avenues and bring them back sub $40k and compete in sedans and not trucks and SUV lines. There are 2 Encores in my Families' line up and while decent they don't feel as nice as the Buicks we've had before and they are small and have a shorter range than the larger Park Avenues had. So I feel they could do much better to compete and they just aren't competing in the market where they'd make the highest number of sales.
They have gone for the slow dime over the fast nickel in economics speak.

lvlaple4Ever, sorry to say that's pretty much the age of an average Buick stateside buyer, which it means it can sell cars like ONCE during their lifetimes, unlike the 4 or 5 they can sell to an upwardly mobile Chinese.
That's the most important issue in marketing terms: how many times you will have the chance to sell to each customer in his or her lifetime...(thinking long term)

I miss when Buick and olds had performance and identity. They both made a pot of iconic cars. So did Pontiac. I wish GM would stop killing brands.
True. I can see a day coming soon when the only GM cars available in the US are Chevy and Cadillac. Nobody here buys Buick, so I see that as becoming a China-only brand. Don't know why there's still GMC trucks - they're just rebadged Chevys.
@@stratplayr6997 Having just Chevrolet and Cadillac will never work. Cadillac is way too expensive these days. Chevrolet doesn't try to go upscale like Ford has tried to do. You need that middle brand for buyers who are ready to move up from Chevrolet but aren't ready to move to Cadillac. That's why Ford looks bad for eliminating Mercury. Lincoln is no longer the true luxury brand it once was because it was moved down market.
The difference is that in the US -- Buick is a brand your broke grandpa drives. In China, Buick is the the car that founding fathers of modern China drove. It's what everyone aspire to have when they made it in a way. The good news is that Buick will import their Chinese success to the US eventually. Gotta get rid of that stigma that only old people buy Buick.
@待化的冰 even better. Marketing worked. US marketing is focused around the superbowl and couple little chuckles that are somehow supposed to go make me buy a car.
I love buicks, they are tough and reliable. But the reason people don't buy as many now is because GM's build quality has went down, they all wanna make as much money as they can instead of worrying about the quality of the product. If all manufacturers would get back to quality we would be better off. Its very cool to see another country love an American brand as much as we do, I will always have a buick sitting in my driveway.
The Minivan thing is not only a Chinese thing. The Japanese market and the South East Asian market mainly Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand & Indonesia LOVES Executive MPV. The Toyota Alphard are like "the thing" to get as a status symbol, and I tend to agree, these luxury MPVs are so spacious but they aren't really so big that it gets annoying.

As a detailer for a Buick GMC dealership, we tend to sell more GMCs than anything. Which astonishes me when you can pick up a 2019 Buick Encore for 17,000 at my dealership. They struggle to sell and the quality of the cars are higher than the GMC cars which we sell more of. And don’t even share the same infotainment system. The Envison I never heard of until I started my job back in the summer of 2018. And I thought it was a marvelous car. It’s luxurious and the quality is pristine, but the issue is the price you can get an ok featured model for about 33,000. And a premium 2 package with all the bells and whistles is going to set you back in the lower forties. Buick needs to adjust their prices if they want to sell more, but maintain the quality.
Buick makes a really great product. The Enclave rates up there with the Japanese competition. The Lacrosse is one really nice car. Pillow soft ride with plenty of power, maybe a better buy than its direct competition Lexus. What I don’t get is why won’t GM advertise these great cars? (They then cancel production). @@randomrazr to be honest, where it is made doesn't bother me. The Ford Fusion is made in mexico along with the Toyota Tacoma, then the brand new Toyota Supra is made in Austria. The fact that where ever a car is made, it still has to obey the auto manufacturers rules and build quality and the last time I checked Buick as a brand was awarded Best Customer Satisfaction with KBB and JD Power. Why buy a Toyota that only offers a 5 year power train warranty where Mitsubishi offers a 10 year 100,000 mile power train warranty? Yeah, I have a Buick Excelle gt, 1349cc exhaust, but 163 horsepower, 230 Nm of torque. Actually I think he's fine because it only costs me about $ 14,000. And it only takes eight seconds to reach 100 kilometers an hour, or 63 miles an hour. It is easy to step on the gas pedal for 2-3 seconds every day to surpass other cars. And it also has good lateral support. I turned 90 degrees at the intersection at a speed of 70 kilometers per hour and found that it didn't seem to reach the limit, but my courage was probably at its limit. All of this stems from the fact that its front-wheel shock absorber is very hard, so hard that an 80-kilogram person presses down from the hood directly above the front wheel, and it is almost unresponsive, and can only shake up and down by about 1 mm。
The Regal GS is super cool and the Regal TourX is definitely something I want to buy!
Chinese young men don't like it.many people bought Buick just because it's not very expensive.
Videos like this make me wish for a better time like the early 60s to mid 70s where Buick had unique cars for most buyers and was still exclusive, like most of GM at that time. I bought a well used 1963 Buick Riviera for less than $700 dollars as my first car, and it was a challenge to get me to school and back. In the end it paid off and taught me some automotive knowledge.
Buick was one of the best automobiles made by GM even when it was made in Flint.

They make localised vehicles such as the A4L/A6L alongside other German car brands due to the unique demand from China for cars with extra legroom.
Audi has the biggest sales volume of any German luxury brand worldwide. Excluding the United States.
Yep. Same goes for Volkswagen and BMW.
The Buick cars in China are far better looking and more technologically advanced than in US. *_Reminds me of KFC and how they have better food there_* :3
The only Buicks sold in China and not in the US are the smaller cars and GL8 van. The larger more "luxurious" cars are the same.
I've always liked Buicks and still do.
I like Buicks because they're classy, but not as expensive as brands like BMW or Lexus.
They also seem to be a somewhat good choice for reliability. They're not perfect of course, but they'll run poorly for longer than any European brand will run at all. It's not too uncommon to see an old Buick spit and sputter its way over 300k miles.

In Korea, Jose Cuervo is considered the top premium tequila. Go figure.
In Hong Kong I remember Budweiser was a high end choice at the bar

I wouldn't say that China "loves" Buick rather than the brand is one of the most familiar brands in China. AND it's the cheapest "business vehicle" in China.
Buick was one of the earliest auto brands that entered in China's auto market, in the early 1990s, hence it has built up a well known name for itself. So it becomes one of the most familiar car brands in China, and it was first catered to the business professional as a luxury brand, before Alfa and other European brands even started any ad campaigns.
4 years later, I feel the Buick is less and less popular here in China. The market is super competitive now.
Bring back Pontiac !
Pontiacs sucked...
Nah, I’m currently working in Hong Kong and nobody cares about Buick or any American cars except Tesla.
Monalisabubebube Hong Kong is a different market. They even drive in the different side of the road
I'm Asian, live in TX, and got a LaCrosse. Why? Because after test driving BMW, Audi, Cadillac, and Lexus, Buick was more comfy than 3 of them, matched Lexus comfort and exceeded all their cabin space, leg room. Quieter cabin environment than all of them. Buick value is just phenomenal. However, it did have electronics issues before 36k, fixed via warranty. Now it's performing awesome even though my mother beats the gas pedal like she beats me throughout childhood.
Im an American who loves my Buick Encore so much that Ive owned 2 of them. The next one will be the Enclave
Wow, I'm surprised nobody has say anything negative about China. The double standard.
why need say negative? US new always say the negative about my contry!! I feel it so hypocrite.
@@chinadolls9424 America makes every country look bad, especially middle east where I am from. They brainwash fools and keep them in a cycle.
Chinadolls Because China is a hole.
@@Outcastiid my contry not a hole. U probly never left your litto farm village haha see more world learn more
As an american I agree with you , China has many nice things . Mr. Zach need to travel more. However we in the west also see much pollution, Government control citizens lives too much, steal and copy all western designs, then want to sell the copied designs back to us but never buy our products. This is also hypocrite. So you see hypocrite can go both ways. You are right that many writers who say negative about China are from small and rural area . They want to feel better about their life and so put other country down. However if you read youtube comments many people from other countries also criticize USA and they have a right to do it because USA believe strongly in free speaking. Remember USA will never be a perfect angel of a country but unlike in some other country most american feel if we find truth in criticism of our country we can learn and try to do better. Unfortunately with current president Chump I sometimes wonder if he wants USA to improve. The good news is his maximum term is 8 years. @@chinadolls9424
At 4:33, that's a street in Taipei, Taiwan. Taiwan doesn't sell Buick cars. smh.
Buicks are awesome. Why many Americans complain?!
Wow cool shots! I can't wait to go back to Europe again with my drone and DSLR and shoot some more videos! 😀
Buick is everywhere in China.
So... I was discussing a new car with my wife while driving down the road.
Me: I like Buick.
Wife: It's a grandparent car.
Me: No it's not. Tiger Woods drives one.
Wife: There's one up ahead. Catch and pass it then tell me who is driving.
Well. Let's just say the driver wasn't Chinese. I am moving to China to be among my people.
Robert Lindeman he’s a spokesperson, Shaq is as well....or was
One mistake that Buick made was when they stopped producing the LeSabre here in America. It was a best-selling car; ceasing production was positively stupid. The Buick LaCrosse and Lucerne weree nowhere near as impressive as the LeSabre or the Park Avenue.
Buick cars in China are German designed Opel cars for the European market with a Buick badge.
short answer: because they're actually just rebadged opels.
Real Buick’s have “port holes”. They are missing totally.
I absolutely love Buicks. Can't wait to get one.
As a guy who has been working in China I can proove this is accurate and my car is a Buick
