This is the video we made about our favorite show: "Deadwood". Though it only lasted three seasons, we think it is one of the best works of television ever made.
In a way, they were mirror images. GOT was a fictional fantasy show, imitating the Wars of the Roses.... Houses of Stark and Lannister vs the Houses of York and Lancaster. The similarities between the names were not an accident. Deadwood, on the other hand, used historical figures to mimic Shakespeare. What literate person does not see Hamlet, or perhaps more accurately, King Lear, unfolding throughout the series' run?
As a huge GOT/Asoiaf fan, I can agree that Deadwood is better than GOT from season 5 onward. Early GOT can't be disrespected like that. The other contender is Black Sails; amazing show. Also, if you love elegant dialogue like Deadwood, try Penny Dreadful(the 1st and 2nd season).
My favourite language in Deadwood was never the swearing, although I did enjoy it immensely. I loved EB's rants to and depredations of Richardson. So beautiful.
Hearst had some good ones. “Are you saying you wanna fuck me? “You keep talking about Plato and Alcebiadese. Are you suggesting some sort of homosexual connection between us?” “If I said fuck yourself Sherrif, would you lay that to my drunkenness or a high estimate of your athleticism?”
The casting of this series was the dictionary definition of genius. Ian McShane and Powers Boothe are the obvious ones, but digging deep for guys like the leader of the Brothers Darryl, Principal Rooney, and Ned Ryerson -- that's where a lot of the magic was made. What an absolutely phenomenal cast.
Hold up.. best awards for actors here go to Brad dorif as the doc and Robin weigert as calamity Jane. Ian mchane as well. Those 3 out acted anybody I've ever seen in my life.
@Mellowcanuck... Goes to show that even then Politicians were just as reviled as they are now.... An old joke comes to mind: Why are Politicians worse than Pedophiles??…. Pedophiles only fuck children, while Politicians on the other hand, fuck EVERYBODY!!!
Frontier Shakespeare I loved the way the found reasons for characters to monologue. Speaking to dogs, horses, gravestones, decapitated heads, their own reflection in a puddle. It was genius. So immersive.
Loved this series and the dialogue. I Like Swearengen, Bullock, Utter and the main gang but Jack Langrishe was probably the most underrated character in the series. Loved all his lines.
"I will be so grateful if you will trust me with your sadness, and I will trust you with mine, so that even when we are sad we will be grateful for how much we love each other, and know that we are in the world as much in our pain as in our happiness."
9:34 to 10:06 is absolute mastery (and wisdom) with that merciless stare. Al is giving a life lesson-and he's making sure the lesson is being taken, absorbed, contemplated, finalized. There are NO gray areas in Al Swearingen. People are always on their toes with him because he's like a powder keg that can go off at any time unless very, very carefully handled.
An artfully and skillfully edited montage. You captured "Deadwood's" horrible beauty and its profane poetry perfectly. "Do you know the sound of thunder? Listen to the thunder" ranks right up there with "What's the most you've ever lost in a coin toss? Call it" for a short dialogue clip that can pitch me into the abyss. The horror, the horror.
Best line, Wolcott: "I am a sinner who does not expect forgiveness, but I am not a government official." And as evil as he was, at least he knew it, unlike Commissioner Jarre.
I love this show, shame there are only a few seasons, the language is unbelievable fowl, but then, this was a harsh time, harsh land and harsh people back then, so I can imagine this show got it pretty much dead on with the dialect.
I HAVE BEEN WATCHING TELEVISION SINCE IT'S INCEPTION NO PROGRAM HAS EVER NOR WILL EVER COME CLOSE TO MATCHING DEADWOOD THE ACTING THE CAST AND OMG THE LANGUAGE EVERYTHING PALES IN COMPARISON
Dont let the language put you off. This is one of the best shows I've seen in a very long time. Why!? Why only 3 seasons? Why does a show like this get cancelled, Yet daytime slop goes on for decades? God willin and the creek dont rise, another show this good will come along one day!
Now that the wrap-up movie is just around the corner, I see a number of commenters on the various trailers who complain that there wasn't enough 'action' during the show's run. Compared to a spaghetti western, I suppose they are right, but I myself never once watched in hopes of seeing gunfights from start to finish. The dialogue is what always drew me to the show. So tight and so well written, you had to PAY ATTENTION to appreciate how beautifully the show was crafted.
I discovered this series early 2019 and immediately ordered the boxset on Blueray and haven't been able to stop watching it.. A lot of talent that went on to star in S o A later too.
If people can get past the (funny) parts showing the obscenities, they'll see some of the beauty of the language, from virtually every character. Shakespearean, indeed, and one of the beauties of the show.
5:51 "...go away I am at prayer" "If that's not a lie, as I see to it on the common. What claim is your piety on my deference?" *long pause* "FUCK YOURSELF!" "FUCK YOU, SIR"
That's why real critics like me think that great dialogue was fucked up by using fuck every breath by every fucking cocksucking character in the fucking show.
This show is full of lovely wording. "You seeing a finish to that?" (approximate) - Al when talking to the Mr. Garrett while he's sipping his whiskey. "We'll find our stride." (approximate) Al to Bullock, in talking about them not getting along so far.
This is true. After I finished Deadwood, I had a void caused by a great show that was cancelled way too early... So I started watching other Westerns. None of them even come close to Deadwood. Hell on Wheels is alright, but the complex plots and the artful language of Deadwood are just not there.
Not just the profanity was amazing for the show, but when my gf and I would binge watch it, I know they were speaking English however there were a few occasions when I would rewind a scene because I still didn't understand what was said. I loved the script more than any other show I've ever seen. I imagine that if you could 'pluck' someone out of the 1870's and place them in the 'now',,,, they'd have a hard time understanding some of what today's dialogue meant as well
My favorite character was Seth Bullock played by Timothy Olyphant. I love Timothy Olyphant as an actor and have ever since I saw him as an ecstasy dealer in the movie "Go". I loved Deadwood and like everyone else was very upset when it was done, especially when there were so many stories that were not yet resolved. I am glad Olyphant has the starring role in Justified now. It's a great show. Not like Deadwood but a great show nonetheless.
This is outstanding, as for the language if you had the Blue ray DVD set and watched the extras on it you would see the part where David Milch speaks of the language and how it really was this way!!! The interviews with David Milch were outstanding and very informative on how this series evolved!!!
The best show ever put on tv those who has not seen it need to even if they are offended by foul language. You get used it after the first 10 sec or so
lol Breaking Bad. Way too commercial. At least if you said Justified to stay in the same kind of underrated jewels, i could understand.. But Breaking bad ? Like this could be compared to The Wire or Deadwood xD
Adrien Cailleaux Breaking bad was great but it was on AMC with commercials and censorship. So in context, it can hang, especially if you watch the DVD's uncensored commerical free. Yes, it can't hang with the wire or deadwood, but Justified can't hang anywhere near breaking bad. Justified worked for maybe one season, but their low budgets and shitty sets and tired recycled plot lines got old quick. I think I got a couple episodes into the third season before I felt i was just watching the same thing over and over.

Adrien Cailleaux I never read any of the books, I am talking about the show. You can make a good show on low budgets, and justified was a decent show the first season. And i don't own a TV, so I don't care if breaking bad is commericial or not, I watched it without censorship or commercials. You should try it. But the last season of justified apparently has good reviews, so I will check it out.
the reason the profanity was extreme, was that the profanity actually used then was quite shocking at the time, but mild by today's standards. they wanted to give the same effect it had then so they made it much stronger.

excellent compilation - from some of the most amusing to the most profound moments. I find the language of Shakespeare enjoyably - and the language of Deadwood just as enjoyable and entertaining.
This is the greatest show to binge watch in the winter. I've watched the show from beginning to "end" at least a dozen times now, and it never really gets old. This video needed more scenes with Jewel tho. "I sold some pussy!". Fucking love this show.
This show was one of HBO's greatest series. Too bad it was cancelled before it had the chance to run its course. (It actually ran between 2004 through 2006)
Elaina M They claim the reason it was cancelled was "creative difference's", but i think the simple truth is, the production of each program cost in excess of $4,000,000 a pop! That's a lot of bloody reason's to cancel, eh? Bloody well right, the c*#k s^%ckers!
fantastic video for an amazing series that still makes me hold hope that they will give it the proper ending it deserves. one last season to wrap it up. season 3 came to a head in the final episode and made every fan hold their breath while waiting for the gunfight you knew was coming between those in Deadwood and Hearst's men/Pinkertons ..... I hope they make a final season still.
As weird as this sounds, I didn't mind the ending much at all. It spoke the message that even after great drama life still goes on. I think if they had continued they would've strayed further and further from actual history and into some very weird storylines. There's also the problem of the greatest villain. Once you have the personification of badness enter and exit your story, there really isn't anywhere else to climb. The third season was already suffering from some of that.
brilliant piece of editing. yes, this show was the greatest TV show of all time for a few reasons, one being David "fucking" Milch, and of course the cast, that was as deep on their "bench" as any world champion sports team.
the dialogue and language used in Deadwood is wonderful........not the profanity so much as the English spoken in the mid to late 19th century......they must have had an entire team of language specialists or linguists to translate to the writers of the show.......I dont know how Dancing with wolves won 100 oscars when they all talked like 21 century New Yorkers......geez
Thanks for including the Al saying to Merrick. "...stand it like a man, and give some back" speech. That line helps me many times when I face adversity. I watch this show constantly in reruns on HBO and although I have seen every episode many times I still find little gems of linguistic delights. There are not many show that leave you hungry for more. It would be great to see deadwood when the camp first got established or at least from Als' perspectives.
Had the series not been so costly to make (Although it was), it might have carried on for a few more seasons. It's a shame they had to cancel it for that reason, however I'm grateful they sell the series on dvd :D
They planned to end it with a fourth and final season. I don't understand it neither, why fucking HBO couldn't have let them make one more season. Cocksucka's
At first I thought it was because the profanity and inappropriate scenes at times was the reason why they cancelled. But then I was told that it was mostly the fact that each episode cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to make.
The costliness was only one factor of its cancellation. Since the show was on a paid cable network and didn't go by ratings, but subscriptions, HBO felt that since The Sopranos what's the most popular show on TV that no one would cancel HBO if they got rid of Deadwood which was true. But it angered fans of Deadwood who did cancel out of spite but not enough for HBO to take a significant loss. Each episode cost Millions to make not hundreds of thousands
This is a wonderful tribute to the greatest TV show ever made. Thank you! For those who might think the use of curse words anachronistic... The use of modern curse words was a way to convey to the audience that these people were unique. They were largely outlaws and outcasts, drawn to essentially an anarchist society.
this show was better then game of thrones.
matt s the only show that could top GOT would be a HBO program. And that would go between Deadwood and Sopranos..

HBO was insane to cancel one of the best shows of all time. From the writing to the acting to the set design, it was superb.

They tried to put together a ending made for prime time tv, obviously never happened. Damn what a F#$&^&g series! wrong about the other oops
Yes. Absolutely the best show ever
Genius show
Maybe one the best works of film ever made!

The greatest dialogue since Bill Shakespeare
This was a great show.
Whoever at HBO was responsible for its early...well I hope they experienced an early end working in the entertainment biz.
This is a wonderful tribute to the greatest TV show ever made. Thank you!
For those who might think the use of curse words anachronistic... The use of modern curse words was a way to convey to the audience that these people were unique. They were largely outlaws and outcasts, drawn to essentially an anarchist society.
I would watch the show 2 or 3 times to get the full meaning that I couldn't understand on the first pass. The cussing I got right away.
