Johnny knew Freddie was going to be good, he set the stage for him in the intro. He was such a class act, wanted Freddie to be comfortable and wanted the audience to receive him well. Johnny is the undisputed king of late night for all time.

I have been doing stand up comedy all my life. For every comedian that is old enough, Carson was the holy grail. To be on the Tonight Show with Johnny meant you made it as a comedian. I have dreamed about it for 35 years. Freddie's set and panel is flawless. At 19 he scored the biggest home run of his life. RIP

Incredible talent at such a young age. Took control of the audience the moment he opened his mouth. Freddie was given a six million dollar contract at the age of 22 for five years on the hit series Chico and the Man. Depression is still not fully understood or given the attention it should have to this day. RIP MY PUERTO RICAN BROTHER

He didn't die from depression. He died from unbelievably excessive use of cocaine and quadludes that destroyed his mental stability, leading to suicide. He was doing cocaine as early as high school. Had he never gotten into that stuff, he would probably have been all right.

NO other comic on Carson's show delivered and killed the crowd the way Freddie Prinze did. This performance is a classic! It's bittersweet cuz he was gone in 4 years. Freddie was professionally ready for his fame but not emotionally and mentally ready. His fame came way too fast. After this appearance in Dec. '73 he did the following: was the lead on a hit sitcom, did Vegas, appeared on many variety/talk shows, did a comedy album, HBO special, toured, performed for the president, got married, had a son, and got divorced all by Jan. '77 That's a LOT for anyone to handle! However, Prinze is a comedy legend. Thanks for posting this historic comedy moment on The Tonight Show.

WOW! Can't even express the magnitude of this moment, & the sadness it brings. Truth be told, all of those guys should still be around today, but the 2 icons that flanked Freddie on the couch, had a smoking habit that never let them quit, & Freddie suffered from an unbearable time of depression, that caused him to act on an impulse, which brought about his death. Aside from the lapels on Freddie Prinze's clothes (ha!), what strikes me most here, is the LOVE instantly shown by Carson AND Sammy Davis, Jr., both living legends, and knowing what it meant to an up & coming comedian. Who knows, maybe Freddie's rise was just a little too quick, in the way that powers in the industry recognized this man's likability & saw no bounds to the cash flow he could generate. I really don't know who could have not liked the guy.....and he ended up too heart broken, he felt, to go on. Even success is not as easy to manage as people might think.

Johnny was the king he says it right here “some people are good but people don’t necessarily like them “ Freddie had an affinity for the audience right off the bat Johnny saw it and I was about 4 when Chico and the man came out my dad ( RIP pops I miss you so much my heart burns ) but anyway my dad loved Freddie prinze he used to say all the time ees not my job man and I miss that and I miss those days and RIP Freddie you had talent just too much too young he’s probably killing it up in the big comedy skies

The 1st time Johnny called over a comedian after a performance!! Something that Johnny continued to do through his run of The Tonight Show. Freddie was that Good!

Some didn't deserve it. I always thought "they'd better knock out the audience lik Freddie did," or Johnny was just playing it up.

When Johnny invited a comic up to the chairs, that's when they Made It... I can relate very much to Freddy's mental illness and depression. But man, what a talent he had.

Saw him on his first Carson show. Beautiful child, so bright. Was too instantly successful.
Chills went up my spine, I felt there was great tragedy in store, that this so talented young man would not be with us long. Had to laugh at his brilliant comedy, but I found myself in tears. Always felt that people like Sammy Davis jr(never has more talent and personality been granted to an individual as to that tiny, giant of a performer)and Tony Orlando tied themselves to Freddie's shirt tail, gave the boy too much of an ego stocking. Too much, too soon. He could not handle it.

Freddie achieved something rarer for comics appearing on Carson, getting called to the couch on his first appearence. Often, it takes a couple of appearances to do well enough to get there. Billy Crystal, Drew Carey, and only a few others I can think of pulled that off.

His debut show is actually on tonight on me TV. 5/22/2020 I'm the same age as Freddie. What a shame he took his own life. He left a really good kid behind. Prinze jr. I remember when he did it. Terrible tragedy. He would have been huge! I'm not going to watch it. It's too sad.

I remember his show Chico and the Man. Looking Good. It was crazy the day he passed. Nobody in New York could believe it. He was a talented comedian. He went there with the ethnic jokes. He was the first Bomb Latino Comedian. The PC police wasn't there. One thing about racism in America. The comedians who are Latino and African Americans had jokes to entice the European Americans. Because, the jokes are parodies about how they view people who comes from destitute situations. Not only that. The differences about us. Thank goodness you can at least get paid doing it too. Freddie knocked it out the ball park on his shot. Rest Easy Freddie. You are a Legend.

I was only 8 years old when Freddie Prinze died. As a kid I felt sorry for him and just couldn’t wrap my head around it! Why? Why would he kill himself and God he was only 22! I enjoyed watching him on Chico And The Man. It was my first experience with death.

He was the first comic I believe that Johnny called called over to sit down with him I believe and he was made. I remember as a kid watching Chico and The Man and Jack Albertson losing it and breaking down on one of the last shows after he killed himself. What a shame and a tragic wasted talent. He was still a kid when he died.

I was just a kid when Freddie took over the scene like a blaze. He had the potential to inherit Johnny's spot instead of Leno. But I have found that those ppl with the most charisma + good looks = a hotassmess/drugs.
