I was in the studio audience that night. Sammy Davis was so thrilled with Freddies performance he left his chair next to Johnny and moved to a place kneeling next to the camera.

NO other comic on Carson's show delivered and killed the crowd the way Freddie Prinze did. This performance is a classic! It's bittersweet cuz he was gone in 4 years. Freddie was professionally ready for his fame but not emotionally and mentally ready. His fame came way too fast. After this appearance in Dec. '73 he did the following: was the lead on a hit sitcom, did Vegas, appeared on many variety/talk shows, did a comedy album, HBO special, toured, performed for the president, got married, had a son, and got divorced all by Jan. '77 That's a LOT for anyone to handle! However, Prinze is a comedy legend. Thanks for posting this historic comedy moment on The Tonight Show.
As a kid I remembered him on Chico & the man ....wasn't exactly sure what was the cause at the time. Genuine talent......never really know what is going on with people's personal struggles.
WOW! Can't even express the magnitude of this moment, & the sadness it brings. Truth be told, all of those guys should still be around today, but the 2 icons that flanked Freddie on the couch, had a smoking habit that never let them quit, & Freddie suffered from an unbearable time of depression, that caused him to act on an impulse, which brought about his death. Aside from the lapels on Freddie Prinze's clothes (ha!), what strikes me most here, is the LOVE instantly shown by Carson AND Sammy Davis, Jr., both living legends, and knowing what it meant to an up & coming comedian. Who knows, maybe Freddie's rise was just a little too quick, in the way that powers in the industry recognized this man's likability & saw no bounds to the cash flow he could generate. I really don't know who could have not liked the guy.....and he ended up too heart broken, he felt, to go on. Even success is not as easy to manage as people might think.
Well said! In reading about Freddie over the years, one of the things that definitely stood out was how much people liked him. People were drawn to him and women who met him described how attracted they were to him. His charisma was very powerful. I was around back then, a few years younger then Freddie and I fully remember the impact he had. So glad to come across so many of his fans today who still miss and appreciate him even after all of these years....

I remember his show Chico and the Man. Looking Good. It was crazy the day he passed. Nobody in New York could believe it. He was a talented comedian. He went there with the ethnic jokes. He was the first Bomb Latino Comedian. The PC police wasn't there. One thing about racism in America. The comedians who are Latino and African Americans had jokes to entice the European Americans. Because, the jokes are parodies about how they view people who comes from destitute situations. Not only that. The differences about us. Thank goodness you can at least get paid doing it too. Freddie knocked it out the ball park on his shot. Rest Easy Freddie. You are a Legend.

Mr Prinze was Funny as Hell. It's such a Shame that passed away. The world 🌎🌍 Lost a Great 😃👍 Talent.
Holy cow, 19. Eddie Murphy broke at 19 too. People grew up faster back then.
No we cut our beards and mustaches
My first real crush!!!
I was in 10th grade in January 1977 when Freddie committed suicide
Been 43 years...Never forget it...
I remember when Freddie shot himself, which ended Chico and the Man. He was so young and was only 10 years older than myself. It was such a shock...l
Freddie died 45 years ago this month-He was truly talented!
Legendary 🙏🏾
2 Puerto Ricans on that show that night. Freddie Prinze and Samy Davis JR
I wonder how many times his son 'Freddie Prinze jr' has watched this video?
Never knew he was that funny saw him on chico and the man and never thought the show was that good or funny he was a very funny standup I liked how he came back at the end with the hey that's not my job lol RIP freddy
I was only 8 years old when Freddie Prinze died. As a kid I felt sorry for him and just couldn’t wrap my head around it! Why? Why would he kill himself and God he was only 22! I enjoyed watching him on Chico And The Man. It was my first experience with death.
if he graduated the high school of performing arts in 1970 he was in my graduation class.
Te extranamos mucho Freddie Prinze! you must be making people laugh in heaven, it's not my yob man!!
Johnny… the ultimate gentleman 👍👍
He was the first comic I believe that Johnny called called over to sit down with him I believe and he was made. I remember as a kid watching Chico and The Man and Jack Albertson losing it and breaking down on one of the last shows after he killed himself. What a shame and a tragic wasted talent. He was still a kid when he died.
On an interesting note, Sammy sang the theme song of Freddie's show Chico and the man at one point.
Jose Feliciano sang the Chico and the Man theme. Sammy sang the theme to Baretta.
I was just a kid when Freddie took over the scene like a blaze. He had the potential to inherit Johnny's spot instead of Leno. But I have found that those ppl with the most charisma + good looks = a hotassmess/drugs.
