Nothing Betty said about her castmates was malicious or mean-spirited. She was always funny, bright and engaging and entertaining which is what late nite talk shows guests USED to be before the whole industry turned into one continuous plug for this movie or that book or whatever. Betty had a genuine and deep affection for all her co-stars as evidenced by countless interviews, panels and her auto-biography.

    • @arcanondrum6543
      @arcanondrum6543 Před rokem +1

      Carson didn't have competition at the same hour because the other networks didn't try and well they shouldn't. There was only one other person on television that I have witnessed with the same skill to draw out the best in a guest (Sports Anchor Bob Lobell). Betty was extremely talented - she also knew that she "had the floor" for these few minutes.
      BECAUSE Carson owned late night, he didn't care so much about keeping ratings from others. I believe that Johnny had quite a bit of control over who would be on his show next whereas today; the Producer is being directed by the parent corporation that a product (movie, TV show) also owned by the corporation needs to be promoted. Guests come on when their movie is being released and "oh by the way, we have a clip". There was of course; some of that on Carson but it WAS a different time. President R.R. is responsible for all the media consolidation possible under the powers of the Executive Branch. Just a few years later, the rest of the nails hammered home the corporate dominance. It was called the Telecommunications Act, it was wholly written and approved by Republicans in the Legislature and rather than Veto it so (R)'s would OWN it, Billy Clinton signed it. The result is that now; late night is a product, a vehicle to promote other products and so, the ability of the hosts to wrestle back some of what Carson did is up to them in the fewer minutes of freedom they are given.
      I DO think that Jimmy Kimmel is as unconcerned about his job as Carson was and so, he hands over the reigns to other very capable (at least temporarily anyway) guest hosts. Kimmel IS a very clever person and so, may continue to grow in the role. Later on NBC, Seth Meyers has "A Closer Look" (it's on CZcams as well) that's always well worth watching plus I think that that hour allows him some of the freedom that Carson had. Jon Stewart of "the Daily Show" used to host 20 minutes of a simply unbeatable Show where most often; a politician would debate themselves using video of them on both sides of any issue. Stewart was terrible at interviews however so it was only worthwhile to catch "Your Moment of Zen" just before the Credits rolled. Ironically, Jon is on CZcams and not doing what he and his former Staff did best but INTERVIEWING.... I've watched a handful. Last, I will mention Stephen Colbert who graduated from "the Daily Show" onto his own Show and then the corporate mother ship put him in Letterman's CBS slot. Colbert had been a muckraker and tried doing that a couple of times on the Mother Ship where he was promptly given the rest of the week off to compare his salary with his mortgage payment. I'll leave you all with an actual quote from CBS CEO Leslie Moonves on Donald Trump: _“It May Not Be Good for America, but It’s Damn Good for CBS”._ So _"YEAH, Colbert and others. Cash in on the controversy if you like"_ but if you were paying attention as I did, you would have noticed who was called "popular" every day on all of them and who was equally popular but completely ignored until the Superdelegates could do THEIR Thang and we were left with "popular" versus not, instead of the 2 most popular choices - and only one of them with the kind of record that the other one adopted for his campaign speeches (only).

As a 68 myself - I feel blessed to have grown up in an age of true comic geniuses - sadly, there are none like her today. So nuanced and lady-like in every respect, her timing, personality, self-effacing humor and quick wit is amazing. You will also note that brilliant comic talents like her do not need nastiness, harshness or profane language - quite the opposite.

    Betty White learn to ad lib and improvise in radio, and would occasionally play characters. She began in radio because the Hollywood studios said she wasn't photogenic, even though she worked as a model. Within a few years, she had her own radio show and segued into live TV, where a quick wit and an ability to ad lib were essential. No doubt, she reviewed Carson's old jokes about her for this show, so her banter would appear spontaneous banter, but note how easily and quickly she picks up on comments that are "off script." She is so quick in this segment that Johnny has trouble keeping up with her.

    Betty showing why Betty is, and how she became, a legend. Holding her own ... nay! ... taking charge of men who were legends of their own! My gut tells me Betty never entered a room full of men without knowing she would slay. And if that isn't the very definition of sexy, then I don't know what is. Old Broads are definitely the best!

    Fun TV tech: We can see the boom mic "dip in" occasionally as today we are viewing the full scanned picture. TV's you bought back when (CRT) included a plastic (usually) frame around the picture tube that cropped off the edges to give the home viewer a clean, slightly smaller, perfect rectangle. In the studio, crew knew that if you could just see the mic in the top of the frame, it was as close to the talent as possible and wouldn't be seen at home.
    In the black and white days, actors wore green pancake makeup to look healthy on screen.
    The blinking dots across the top of some video is the encoded closed captioning track.
    30 fps is actually 29.97 in analogue video.
    I know lots of useless stuff from the olden days...

    Saw much of Life With Elizabeth as well as Date With The Angels. Especially for those days, they were funny shows. Even enjoyed her on game shows. (Mostly Password) shortly after she started on Mary Tyler Moore, was a major fan. On tribute shows, (like one for Morgan Freeman) her whimsy and risque humor was a treat. Her delivery impeccable. She will be greatly missed.
