Pool Lesson: Breaking An 8-Ball Rack Two Ways

- Hey everybody! Here's something everyone can use to improve making a ball on an 8-ball rack, or making the 8-ball on the break!

So let me get this straight! If I break this way, this ball might do something or it might not! and if I'm consistent, it might go here or it might not! "Did you see how it nearly happened" Nope! you have absolutely no clue. The odds on potting a ball on an American table are pretty high, because the pockets are like buckets and they have straight sides. After your first prediction went wrong entirely I zoned out, sorry.
Apologies that you zoned out of the point of the lesson, which is where 5 particular balls have a "tendency" to go.

b : direction or approach toward a place, object, effect, or limit
Because American tables have "bucket" pockets and straight sides, what does that have to do with how balls will react out of the rack of the break? If I had no clue, then I guess I'm just lucky that I can produce consistent results.
I'm no professional, but they also produce consistent results on their breaks whether it's 8-Ball, 9-Ball, or 10-Ball. I'm guessing they have no clue either.
Perhaps you can explain it better?
@@LilChrisPoolPlayer in your first break you say, "were going to aim for the middle of the 8 ball", then in the next style of break you say, "were no longer going to aim for the head ball, now were going to aim for the ball in the second row" , so in the first break what are you aiming for? the head ball or the 8?

Thank you Chris. As soon as I finished watching the video, I went to our table and, using a classic break, made 2 balls on each of 3 breaks. Having watched many videos on breaking, you're the first one to actually give us an aim point in the rack.
If they make a game where the purpose of the break is to launch the cue ball off the table, I win every time.

I learned that 8-ball break 30 years ago when I read it in a Steve Mizerak book. I have always used that break ever since then. I have gotten several 8-ball breaks, most in the opposite side, with some kicked into the opposite side corner near me, and occasionally in the near side pocket. However, I have also several times gotten my spin wrong (usually because I was wearing beer goggles), and the cue ball ended up ricocheting off the table, or into the near side foot corner. It is a risky shot with disastrous consequences if done incorrectly, but man does it feel great when you do it right!!! And it gets a lot of looks from everyone at the bar...If you nail it early, you will be in your opponent's head for the rest of the night, and win the confidence game... :)

I began playing regularly about a year ago and am not a bad player, but haven't really improved much because I just keep repeating what I already know.
Video lessons like this are an excellent way for me to learn. I can watch and rewatch these kinds of tips and then practice them later. No pressure.
I'm going to concentrate on these two break techniques tonight when the gang gets together for our Tuesday night session.

Thank you Lil' Chris! I play pool every night and I'm really good a cut shots and bank shots (1 and 2 rail). But my breaking ability is average at best. I scratch way too often. This video will help me tremendously I really think. I'll be using the classic break and will track the trajectory of the 5 key balls you mentioned and demonstrated. I appreciate you!

Been learning pool the past 8 months, watching tons of CZcams vids and practicing as much as can as places open back up sense the pandemic. Come across this vid and have started practicing the break to make the 8-ball in. Joined my 1st ever league, APA, with my GF (she’s been playing 10 years). Just had our 1st match last night. Im a 3 and I got put against a 5. I won the coin flip, and on my 1st break in my 1st ever pool league game. I smoked the balls on the break and pocketed the 8-ball without scratching for the win. Lol. Game 2 I broke pocketed several balls but the cue ball jumped off the table. But I was still able to win the racket and win the match 2-0. Ty for the vids and helping this noobs game. You got a subscriber and a fan here... just wish someone would have been videoing it. Lol

This is exactly what I have been looking for! Very informative, short and sweet to the point! You break down what are the (5) possible balls will drop. Other videos does not explain that. Thanks for the tips. A small recommendation for the future though; outcomes being the same, but opposite sides for lefties is apparent enough to not warrant additional repetition within the lessons. Great video Chris.

Weekly pool player here, I have used the second break style he demonstrates for some time now and have potted the black a few times. At the very least it gets the black moving.
I've been breaking from the wrong side of the table, so that alone (right-handed, break from left side) helps a lot! Thanks, Chris! Will try the classic break & see if I keep control more often from breaks. Good stuff!!
I honestly don't see how it matters which side that you break from. If you strike the ball the same, it doesn't matter whether you are right or left handed.

I watched a video explaining how professionals sometimes pot the 9 on the break in 9-ball.
I tried it while playing my best friend and I believe on the third break I got it.
I told him, guess where I learned that from? CZcams. He’s like “it’s all luck, you just got lucky.”

I've used the first break method at my job on a table half the size of yours but I might have to adjust the ball position,, also it works. I want to try the second break now. Thank you

Did 10 breaks of each and while I found the "classic" was a safer, because the margin of error was higher on the "8 ball" break, I still favored the 8 ball style cuz it sunk the 8 2 times out of my 10 breaks and who doesn't enjoy that feeling? Rad vid. Short and sweet. Helped me understand breaks better. Following now, keep it up

English 8 ball: Hold my beer!
Hi Chris, I've been playing that second ball 8 ball break for eons. I've always hit the second ball just like you do but with a lot more spin. My cue ball deflects pretty much as far as the power of my stroke and cue will allow As a result I get a much fuller hit on that second ball and the extreme spin I put on the cue ball essentially stops the cue ball from moving very much after contact. I do not get near as much cue ball movement as you do so my scratches are minimized but I'm sure I don't make as many 8 balls as you do either.
Watching both of your break shots the cue ball heads up table on the first break shot and it heads down table on the second break shot. For me turning that cue ball loose on the break shot is a huge no no because the farther it travels after contact the more likely that if finds a pocket. I don't need to tell you what that usually means as far as my chances of winning that game if I'm playing anyone that can shoot.
Side note: I am flabbergasted at how often professional players scratch on their break shot. The percentage has to be at least 15 percent or higher on average.
Love your videos. Even though I know almost everything you cover in them, sometimes I forget stuff and this watching your videos is sort of very beneficial refresher pool playing course for me.

I use your eight ball break position but try to sink the one of the two end balls in the end pockets. Half a tip toward rail (depending on what side you break from) and half to whole tip of bottom) Works well too! Never really thought about eight ball movement with this break but I am gonna start watching for it!
Your regular break is exactly as I have been doing for years. Nice
I learned to put a lot of topspin on the cue ball so that after it bounces back, it reverses and runs back into the pack, increasing the odds of moving the 8 ball.
However, you generally want the cue ball to be in the center of the table after a break. The closer you are to a rail, the more difficult your run out will be.
I never knew there was a science to breaking.
Great explanation on the tendencies of ball trajectory. The odds of making the 8- ball on the second break are about 1 in 1000. But, if you are playing these rules, it is SO worth the... shot.

All pretty useful if you are playing on a decent competition table. Most times though you will end up dry because of dead rails and a slow nap. Another thing also helps is that the balls are regularly cleaned and checked for cracks and chips which affects the consistency of travel.
Hi Chris. This is a really neat video and its tempted me to leave my comfort zone a bit to try those breaks out. I've been playing for several years but I've always broke from a "straight on" direction (Mid Diamond on end of table and roughly mid section behind break line) and I've had some luck with sinking the 8 but off break but not consistantly. Thank you for this knowledge :)
